FIFA Reveal Suspension of Football Federation of Belize

The Emergency Committee of world soccer’s governing body, FIFA, decided on Friday, June 17, to suspend the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) with immediate effect on account of severe governmental interference.

The suspension forced the postponement of the return leg of the qualifying tie for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, due to be played in Belize yesterday, June 19, between the home team and Montserrat.

The suspension was enforced due to the government of Belize, through the Ministry of Sports, informing the FFB that it was “not authorized to represent this Country in any local or international competition or in any other forum for football on behalf of the Government, People and Nation of Belize”, since it had “failed to meet the requirements for registration with the Council, as the National body for the administration of football in Belize”, according to the Ministry on June 8.

Two days later, FIFA wrote to the FFB to inform them that this was a clear case of governmental interference and gave the FFB until 30 June to settle the dispute or be referred to the FIFA Emergency Committee for suspension due to a violation of the FIFA Statutes.

The deadline was cut short after the Belize government wrote to FIFA on 16 June saying the Belize police would “not be providing any services to the Federation with respect to the security of the visiting team and officials at the match” to be played on 19 June.

Under these circumstances, and due to the interference of the government of Belize, FIFA claimed that it could not take the responsibility of letting the match take place. The match has therefore been postponed to a new date to be confirmed, but no later than 10 July 2011, provided that the situation is back to normal regarding the FFB and the suspension has been lifted by that date.

In the event that the match cannot take place by that date, the national team of Belize will be excluded from the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil preliminary competition.

Russia’s Smolensk Ring Not Ready to Host Superleague Formula Race in September

Superleague Formula, a motorsport series that comprises cars sponsored by leading football clubs, was due visit the venue on September 3-4. However, the circuit’s directors have admitted that the venue would not be ready to stage an international event before 2012.

However, a statement from senior management at the Smolensk Ring stated that the venue’s officials have decided to focus on upgrading infrastructure and track facilities ahead of the 2012 campaign.

However we are hopeful that it may well fit into our calendar in 2012.”

Webb added: “We have received other offers to take the series elsewhere in Russia and also to alternative territories on the September date, and we are actively investigating further options. We need to make sure that our race teams and drivers are 100% in the loop, so we hope to be able to make a further statement as to an updated race schedule as soon as possible.”

IOC Confirm Investigation Into Bribery Allegations Against Former FIFA President

The former president of world soccer’s governing body FIFA, João Havelange, is being investigated by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Ethics Commission over allegations made in a BBC Panorama programme that he received a US$1m bribe.

Havelange has been a member of the IOC since 1963 and at 95, the Brazilian is the most senior member at the body. He was alleged by the programme to have received the “bung” from FIFA’s collapsed marketing partner, ISL.

FIFA have refused to investigate the claims but now it has been revealed that the IOC requested the information from Panorama shortly after the programme was broadcast last November in controversial fashion, just days before the vote on who would host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

A spokesman for the IOC told the Guardian: “The IOC takes all allegations of corruption very seriously and we would always ask for any evidence of wrongdoing involving any IOC members to be passed to our Ethics Commission.

“The Ethics Commission launched its inquiry before Christmas last year, after the first BBC Panorama programme went on air.

“The Commission has received supporting documents from the BBC and is now in the process of verifying the authenticity of the material that has been gathered so far.

“It is therefore pursuing its work and, although we cannot speak on its behalf as it is conducting its work independently, as a general principle they would always look at any available evidence of wrongdoing by IOC members while the process is ongoing.”

Havelange was elected as President of FIFA in 1974 and held the post until 1998 when Sepp Blatter, his chosen successor, who had worked closely with him as FIFA’s general secretary, succeeded him.

Cameroon’s Issa Hayatou, a member of FIFA’s Executive Committee who is also on the IOC, is already under investigation by the Ethics Commission as a result of the controversial programme.

According to the broadcast, a list of secret payments made by now defunct marketing company ISL included one of 100,000 French francs in 1995 to Hayatou.

He has denied the allegations.

Singapore Businessman Peter Lim Takes Over Valencia

La Liga club Valencia have a new owner after Singapore businessman Peter Lim bought a 70.4% of the shares owned by the club’s foundation.

The Valencia Foundation’s patrons voted for Lim’s proposal ahead of other offers from international consortiums offering large cash injections. “Peter Lim has completed the takeover,” a club spokesman told Reuters.

The spokesman added that the next task for the new owner will be to agree a deal with creditors Bankia, who are owed €220m. The club’s total debt is around €360m.

Lim was the choice of the club president, Amadeo Salvador, who felt that his offer was best suited to turning around the fortunes of the club which failed to qualify for next season’s Champions League and were knocked out of the Europa League earlier this month by eventual winners Sevilla in the semi-finals. Valencia are 10th in La Liga.

Ross Brawn Confirms Departure from Mercedes F1

Ross Brawn will leave his position as team principal at Mercedes F1 at the end of 2013, it was announced today.

Brawn, 59, whose future at the Brackley-based squad had been the subject of considerable speculation in recent months, has chosen to hand over the team leadership to executive director (business) Toto Wolff and executive director (technical) Paddy Lowe.

“The most important consideration in my decision to step down from the role as team principal was to ensure that the timing was right for the team in order to ensure its future success,” said Brawn.

“The succession planning process that we have implemented during this year means we are now ready to conduct the transition from my current responsibilities to a new leadership team composed of Toto and Paddy.

“Mercedes-Benz has invested significantly in both the personnel and infrastructure at Brackley and Brixworth. Thanks to the one-team approach we have implemented between the two facilities, the team is uniquely positioned to succeed in 2014 and I am proud to have helped lay the foundations for that success.

“However, 2014 will mark the beginning of a new era in the sport. We therefore felt this was the right time to simultaneously begin a new era of team management to ensure that the organisation is in the strongest possible competitive position for the years to come.

“We can take pride not just in our on-track achievements but also in the organisation we have built at Brackley,” he added. “In its different guises over the past six seasons, this team has delivered some of the most memorable moments of my career. Our second place in this season’s constructors’ championship is an important milestone on the road to championship success.

“I am confident that the future will hold just as much success for the team and will take real pride in having played my own part in those achievements.”

Niki Lauda, Mercedes’ non-executive chairman, hailed Brawn’s contribution to the team:  “First of all and most importantly, we must say thank you to Ross. When you consider the step that has been made from finishing fifth in 2012 to the second place that we have secured this season, he has been the architect of this success. He put the plans in place to recruit key people since early 2011, and the performance this season shows that the team is on the right track.

“We have had long discussions with Ross about how he could continue with the team but it is a basic fact that you cannot hold somebody back when they have chosen to move on. Ross has decided that this is the right time to hand over the reins to Toto and Paddy and we respect his decision.”

Brawn won multiple world titles with Benetton and Ferrari before becoming team principal at the then Honda team in late 2007. When the Japanese manufacturer pulled out of Formula One racing at the end of 2008, Brawn acquired a large share of the team, which was renamed Brawn GP. The squad scored a famous double in 2009, winning the drivers’ championship with Jenson Button and seeing off Red Bull in the race for the constructors’ title.
