Bin Hamman still wants explanation from FIFA

Mohamed Bin Hammam is still waiting for a “fully motivated decision” from FIFA relating to his lifetime football ban nearly two weeks after the ethics committee’s verdict.

The Qatari has confirmed he will appeal regarding the decision which was made on the July 23 verdict in relation to an ethics probe into the bribery scandal.

“According to the relevant regulations, an appeal can only be made once the fully motivated decision has been received by the party concerned,” FIFA said in a statement to INSIDER.

“Normally, it takes some time for the fully motivated decision to be finalised and sent. Mr Bin Hammam has not yet received the fully motivated decision.”

FIFA have not responded with a date on releasing the “fully motivated decision”, according to the Qatari, and this has yet to be finalised.

Bin Hammam claims to be sure that he was given the guilty charge before stepping into court and that the ethics of FIFA themselves should be challenged.

The 62-year-old was banned following an investigation into allegations that he attempted to bribe Caribbean Football Union officials at a May meeting in exchange for their votes in his bid to unseat Sepp Blatter in the FIFA presidential election.

Nanjing to Carefully Manage Youth Olympic Spending

China’s eastern city of Nanjing said that the city will be frugal in its approach to new venues as it prepares to host the Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2014.

Nanjing Party Chief and the Games’ Organizing Committee Executive President, Yang Weize said the city spend carefully when adding new competition and training venues.

Yang said: “No new venues will be built if old ones can be renovated; no new facilities will be purchased if old ones can be repaired; no equipment will be bought if they can be rented, and they won’t be rented if they can be borrowed.”

Organizing Committee Deputy Secretary General, Liu Yi’an said 25 of the 34 competition and training venues will be renovated.

Five temporary venues will be disassembled or replaced after the Games end, and the four new locations will be opened to the public.

AC Milan VP Galliani berates “decaying” stadia in Italy

Italy’s stadia has come under the microscope in recent months, and AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has become the latest club official to criticise the state of the country’s soccer venues, stating Serie A risks falling further behind the rest of Europe through lack of development.

Galliani’s comments come after Cesena president Igor Campedelli last week called for government action to address the problem of Italy’s decaying stadia.

Juventus will break new ground for Italian football in September when it opens its new 41,000-seat stadium, the country’s first privately owned football venue.

However, the majority of Serie A teams still have to pay rental fees to city councils for the right to play in their stadia, impacting on their ability to drive matchday revenue and renovate their home arenas.

As a result of recent performances in European competition, Serie A has fallen behind England’s Premier League, Spain’s La Liga and Germany’s 1.Bundesliga in the UEFA co-efficients, and Galliani predicts that France’s new stadia development for Euro 2016 will lead to the country overtaking Italy.

“Thanks to the new stadiums being built for Euro 2016, I predict that the French will also overtake us,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “We could be competitive with equal factors and situations, but unfortunately that’s not the case.

Galliani insists that clubs “can’t do anything” to prevent it due to laws surrounding the development of new stadia.

“Spain has the advantage that they don’t have collective TV rights. Germany have overtaken us thanks to the wonderful new stadiums they built for the World Cup in 2006. It’s like theatres and restaurants. There are beautiful theatres and ugly ones; there are luxury restaurants and then pizzerias. But we can’t do anything. Without stadiums we can’t do anything and without a new law we can’t construct new stadiums. Even the politicians have understood that, but the design of the law has remained blocked between the two branches of parliament.”

Toronto 2015 Fires Chief Ian Troop, Hires New CEO

The Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games Organizing Committee (TO2015) board of directors has revealed it has fired chief Ian Troop and replaced him with Saad Rafi as their new CEO.

Reports suggest Troop (pictured) was made redundant following ‘leadership issues’ and also follows criticism of his expenses.

“On behalf of the board of directors, I’d like to extend our sincere gratitude to Ian for all of his hard work, his commitment and his contributions,” said Peterson. “Our capital projects are on time and on or under budget. We wish him well.”

Troop will be replaced as of Jan. 6 by deputy Health Minister Saad Rafi, who earned $428,000 last year for running the largest provincial department with a $49-billion budget.

Rafi takes over the leadership of TO2015 as the organization begins to move from the planning stage to the operational stage in advance of the Games.

Rafi currently serves as Ontario’s Deputy Minister of Health. In this role, Rafi administers an annual budget for the Health Ministry of $48 billion, which is the largest health budget in Canada. During his 25-year career, Rafi has also built a successful advisory practice in infrastructure and was a partner with Deloitte and Touche, LLP.

“I am very excited that Saad has agreed to take on this important role,” said Peterson. “This is a huge, complex endeavour and Saad has all of the necessary experience and expertise to ensure these are the best Pan Am/Parapan Am Games ever.”

The operational phase of the Games involves the coordination among a number of Games partners including all levels of government, representatives of the sport community and members of the 41 Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) nations. TO2015 is tasked with the responsibility of planning, managing and delivering the Games.

It is expected to cost taxpayers at least $2.5 billion to host the Games, which will host 7,666 athletes competing in 51 sports at venues in 14 municipalities, including Toronto, Hamilton, Milton, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Caledon, St. Catharines, and Welland.
