Today at SportAccord Convention: Sir Craig Reedie Relinquishes Role on IOC Ethics Commission

Sir Craig Reedie has stepped down from his role as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Ethics Commission to avoid any possible conflict of interest with his position as President of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

He will be replaced by Baron Pierre-Olivier Beckers-Vieujant, the chief executive of Delhaize and President of the Belgian Olympic Committee.

The decision was confirmed today during the IOC Executive Board Meeting, held in conjunction with the SportAccord International Convention.

Speaking exclusively to iSportconnect, Reedie commented on his resignation: “I’ve got a big job to do at the World Anti Doping Agency and I came off the IOC Ethics Commission as I want to dedicate all my time to doing the WADA job.

“I’m not sure heading an independent international agency is absolutely convenient for a member of a specialised ethics commision at the IOC and it also reduces your time element.”

Reedie, who graduated from IOC Board member to vice-president in 2012, also spoke about his plans for WADA.

“We have a new code which will come into force on the January 1 2015 with a whole new range of rules and regulations to encourage federations and anti-doping organisations to adopt. There’s plenty to do.”

Chelsea Not Ruling Out Stamford Bridge Stay

Chelsea’s chief executive Ron Gourlay has claimed the club’s bid for Battersea Power Station does not mean they have given up on Stamford Bridge.

The Blues last week announced plans to transform the power station into a 60,000-capacity ground and have made a formal bid for the 39-acre site.

The move follows an unsuccessful attempt in October to convince the Chelsea Pitch Owners group to return the freehold of Stamford Bridge.

But Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay claims no decision had been taken to relocate and a redevelopment of Stamford Bridge remains a possibility.

“What we’ve all got to do is keep our feet on the ground as far as Battersea is concerned,” said Gourlay.

“When we met with the Chelsea Pitch Owners shareholders back in October, we indicated that we were doing everything in our power to stay at Stamford Bridge, to extend Stamford Bridge, and we’ve looked at potential opportunities of a new-build around the Stamford Bridge area.

“Not only does that cause us issues with economics, it also causes us major challenges around potential planning applications and all the rest.

“We do feel, as a club, that to stay among the elite, we’ve got to have a bigger stadium.

“And one of the things that we discussed with the shareholders was to look at opportunities within a three-mile perimeter of the current site at Stamford Bridge. One of them is Battersea.

“There’s a long way to go, there are other bidders in there, and we just need to see where it goes from there.

“But if we didn’t enter into that bidding process then we would have lost that as an opportunity if we need it one day down the line. We’ve got to be in a position to make the move quickly.

“But we’ve still not said no to Stamford Bridge and we’re still looking at other alternatives and are working very hard behind the scenes to achieve that.”

Former Head of Brazil 2014 Teixeira to Keep FIFA Seat

Ricardo Teixeira, who quit as head of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and 2014 World Cup local organising committee, will remain on FIFA’s executive committee.

“At the time of writing, Ricardo Terra Teixeira remains a FIFA executive committee member,” FIFA said in a statement.

“FIFA has not received any official communication from Teixeira or from CONMEBOL (the South American Football Confederation) regarding this position.

“It is worth recalling that Ricardo Teixeira has been elected to the FIFA Executive Committee by CONMEBOL (for the first time in 1994).”

FIFA also confirmed that it recognised Jose Maria Marin as Teixeira’s successor both as president of the CBF and the local organising committee.

RFL Save Bradford Bulls Home by Purchasing Stadium

The Rugby Football League (RFL) has helped secure Odsal Stadium’s future after they agreed a deal to buy the property.

The former council tip has been the Bradford Bulls home since 1934 but the Bulls have recently been under pressure to sell to housing developers. They will now pay rent the premises from the RFL, with the League having paid an undisclosed price.

“This arrangement is absolutely the right thing to do, because it safeguards the future of one of the sport’s most famous stadia,” said the RFL chairman, Richard Lewis.

Bradford Bulls Chairman Peter Hood was delighted by RFL’s decision to save the historic stadium.

“The Bulls approached the RFL with the idea, which was subsequently explored and developed over several months, he told the Telegraph & Argus.

“It’s a deal that the RFL has done on its own merits and in the interests of the wider game.

“We have sold them our lease for a capital sum and then we have entered into a new agreement to rent the ground back from them.

“From our point of view, everything about this deal will benefit the club in terms of securing our future at Odsal and ensuring that we retain our spiritual home.

“There is not a downside to this deal as far as we are concerned.

“The opportunity to safeguard the Bulls’ future at Odsal is priceless – that sums up how important it is.”

Mediterranean Games to be ‘unaffected’ by Protests says NOC of Turkey

The National Olympic Committee of Turkey and the 2013 Mersin local organising committee have reiterated the Mediterranean Games will be ‘unaffected’ by the violent protests across several major Turkish cities.

The demonstrations have spread to several major cities, including the capital Ankara, with under-fire Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan warning that his patience was running out.

In a joint statement the NOC of Turkey and Mersin said: “The Mersin 2013 local organising committee and the National Olympic Committee of Turkey can confirm that the Mediterranean Games is unaffected by the largely peaceful protests that have taken place in the Adana-Mersin area, after an exhaustive review of the current situation with leading experts found that there is no elevated risk to the event participants.”

Mersin will host the international multi-sports event between June 20-30 and their is a worry about the safety of the Athletes in the region.

“The safety and security of athletes and participants at Mersin 2013 has been our top priority from the very beginning,” the statement continued. “Under the direction of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, we have worked hand-in-hand with all the necessary authorities and drawn on international best practice to create rigorous safety and security models to deal with all eventualities. Turkey has an excellent safety and security record when it comes to major sporting events over the last decade, and athletes, officials and fans can be confident of experiencing those same high standards.

On Sunday the newly built venues were opened by Prime Minister Erdoğan on schedule, after Mersin stepped in as hosts less than two years ago and successfully compressed a six-year delivery programme into just 18 months.
