RFL Hires Blake Solly as General Manager of Super League

The Rugby Football League (RFL) has appointed Blake Solly as the General Manager of Rugby League’s elite competition, the First Utility Super League.

Solly will leave his position as RFL Director of Standards and Licensing to commence his new role on June 1.

Super League Chief Executive Nigel Wood said: “This is a significant appointment that will enable the First Utility Super League to maximise the opportunities created by the new league structures and ensure that the competition builds on the momentum we have gained in the last few years.

“With an expanding commercial portfolio and a record-breaking broadcast contract with Sky Sports in place, Super League is perfectly positioned to grow still further and Blake is the best person to lead that growth.

“Blake has proved to be a valuable, respected and accomplished administrator during his time at the RFL and this appointment is recognition of his ability.

“The model of having a dedicated General Manager helped us deliver the most successful Rugby League World Cup of all time and I have no doubts that this new role, together with other initiatives, will produce similar results for Super League.”

Solly’s elevation to the new role is given further momentum by the announcement today that Paul Tyrrell will join the organisation to advise on PR and Corporate Communications. Tyrrell was previously Head of External Affairs at BBC North and has held senior communications roles at Manchester City, Liverpool and Everton football clubs. He will support Solly in his new role.

Solly said: “This is an extremely exciting time for the First Utility Super League and it is a real honour to be appointed as General Manager.

“This season we have seen a significant increase in the television viewing audience, sell-out crowds and new sponsors joining the Super League. The appointments of Marketing Director Mark Foster and Paul Tyrrell, with their experience and success in marketing and communications, ensures we are best placed to capitalise on this momentum.

“I want to thank the Super League clubs for supporting the appointment, and look forward to working closely with them to ensure the continued growth of their competition.”

Tickets.com Seals Ticketing Partnership with OHL’s Niagara IceDogs

Technology solutions provider Tickets.com have announced a long-term ticketing services partnership with Niagara IceDogs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

Starting with the 2014-15 season, the IceDogs will utilize the ProVenue platform for all ticket sales at the new 5,300 seat Meridian Centre, in St. Catharines, Ontario.

The agreement expands upon Tickets.com’s presence and support of the Canadian Major Junior market, where it already serves the Sudbury Wolves (OHL), Lethbridge Hurricanes (WHL) and Erie Otters (OHL) as well as their host facilities. ProVenue’s roots in professional sports provide these franchises with a best-in-class feature set to manage complex inventory and fan relationships.

“We could not be happier to partner with the Burke family and the IceDogs,” said Dan Archabal, Tickets.com Vice President of Business Development. “Moving from the Gatorade Complex to the Meridian Centre next year, the franchise wanted to upgrade all components of the fan experience. ProVenue will allow the team to offer fans significantly expanded online self-service options; including an automated kiosk and online account management tools. We understand that OHL franchises need to stay lean. Our tools and services will let the IceDogs focus more on fan contact and less on the transactions.”

IceDogs Owner and Governor Bill Burke emphasized the importance of the services and marketing relationships that Tickets.com will bring to the partnership. “Tickets.com has such a strong base of operations just like ours in the Niagara Region and we hope to take advantage of the facilities and franchises in this network. They have proven themselves in the OHL and we are excited to move forward with them in our new home at the Meridian Centre.”

Scottish Football League Looking for Division Restructure

The Scottish Football League has revealed the 30 member clubs have voted unanimously to pursue a reconstruction proposal,

The SFL met on Wednesday to discuss a three tier 16-10-16 league structure, which does not as yet include Old Firm reserve teams as reported in advance of the meeting.

However, the Scottish Premier League clubs have not been involved in the talks thus far and any agreement between the SFL teams is effectively redundant if the top-flight clubs fail to concur.

Following the overwhelming approval of the SFL member clubs, Longmuir will now take the proposal to the Professional Game Board and the Scottish Premier League, including its chief executive Neil Doncaster.

SFL chief executive David Longmuir told STV: “I’m delighted to say that this morning’s meeting we got clear direction from all 30 clubs unanimously that they would like us to continue to develop this proposal and to take it to, first of all the Professional Game Board, and then through dialogue with Neil and the members of the SPL.

“The key to this is that we are trying to put Scottish football back on a growth curve as opposed to managing decline. It’s a first stab, it’s not a panacea to change the world of Scottish football.”

The aim is to heighten interest with a more dynamic structure and distribute wealth more evenly. Longmuir added: “I think what we’ve put together today gives us that opportunity. What the clubs have said is they’re fully behind it.”

The 12 SPL clubs are scheduled to meet on December 3 at their regular general meeting where reconstruction, and possible expansion, is sure to be on the agenda.

Dunfermline chairman John Yorkston added: “Every club has got their own agenda but hopefully we can get together and work something out for the common good,” Yorkston told BBC Scotland. “It may be that we need an outside committee to make the recommendations. If they (SPL clubs) don’t agree to it then nothing is going to happen.”

The Webster Block, a 1.7 acre city owned site located directly across from First Niagara Center, is considered a prized downtown parcel due to its location in downtown Buffalo, its proximity to Canalside, two major sports venues, and the Peace Bridge. English Football League Promotes Marketing Head to Drive Global Sponsor Hunt

The English Football League is attempting to expand its commercial output by promoting its head of marketing  David Malkinson to a new strategic partnerships role in a bid to step up its chase for global sponsors.

The League is building a commercial team to drive revenue for its clubs through sponsorship of grassroots initiatives and digital campaigns with global commercial partners.

Activity is being led by chief commercial officer, online Richard Heaselgrave, clinic who will work alongside former head of marketing David Malkinson who was promoted to head of strategic marketing and partnerships.

It is the latest phase of the League’s push to court commercial partners that are not purely UK-centric, such as its current roster of sponsors, which include Npower, Carling and Johnstone’s Paint.

The Football League, which distributes money it collects from sponsors to member clubs, hopes the increase in headcount will help it to accrue some of the £23m it will lose when its new television rights deal with BSkyB launches at the start of the 2012/13 season.

The governing body of the Championship, League One and League Two is also close to finding a sponsor for the Football League Cup to replace Carling, which has come to the end of its three year exclusive deal, according to Richard Heaselgrave, who was appointed commercial director in October.

The League wants to talk to brands with “global aspirations”, which it says the UK-centric Carling does not have, to take advantage of the competition’s increased exposure overseas.
