China through their cities Beijing and Zhangjiakou have been revealed as joint bidders for the 2022 Winter Olympics, according to the local Olympic Committee.

Kazakhstan’s Almaty has already announced official candidacies while Munich faces a referendum on Sunday which will decide if it will officially bid for the 2022 Games. Bids are also expected from Poland, Ukraine,Spain, Sweden and Norway.

The International Olympic Committee will award the 2022 Winter Games in Kuala Lumpur in July 2015.

ITU Enjoys Record Broadcast Figures for 2013 World Triathlon Series

The International Triathlon Union (ITU) today showed the sport’s increasing popularity with the announcement that they have received record broadcast numbers in the first quarter of the 2013 World Triathlon Series season.

“The increase in television exposure so early in the season is fantastic,” said ITU President and IOC Member Marisol Casado. “What’s more is that the numbers only reflect the first two races of the season, and we have exciting, innovative courses planned in the second half of the year that will undoubtedly attract an even bigger audience.”

Following the ITU World Triathlon races in Auckland and San Diego, an independent analysis by REPUCOM demonstrated TV contacts, audience and broadcast time have all doubled in value for each of the races.

In the first event alone, TV contacts reached over a billion contacts, which is twice the size of the 2012 Auckland Grand Final and six times the popularity of last year’s season start in Sydney.

In 2012, San Diego acquired 227 million TV contacts and an audience of 6.56 million. This year, the race produced 485 million TV contacts, attracting nearly three times as many viewers, with 15.11 million having tuned in to see Olympic gold medallist Alistair Brownlee and America’s own Gwen Jorgensen win the men’s and women’s races.

In 2012 the World Triathlon Series reached over 5.43 billion TV contacts and 1045 hours of broadcast time. At the current rate of growth, TV figures are expected to see a six fold increase from the Series inaugural year in 2009.

To continue building on this success, Casado explained, “Shorter distances are also attractive for television. At ITU, we are very conscious about this evolution and have included sprint distances at various races, as well as revolutionary courses such as the World Triathlon Kitzbühel, a unique mountain stage.”

“Mixed Relay also makes for very exciting television, as the race produces constant unpredictable lead changes. We know it would add value to the Olympic broadcast schedule, which is just one of the reasons why we are campaigning to include it into the 2016 Olympic programme.”

The spike in television numbers was made possible through commercial deals brokered by ITU partner Upsolut with 23 broadcast companies to show the WTS races live, while 25 TV partners aired ten 52-minute magazine programs in more than 160 countries.

“I anticipate our largest increase in triathlon’s media value is yet to come this year,” Casado said. “We still have four more WTS races this year, which includes a sprint course, Mixed Relay, the world’s toughest triathlon course and the Grand Final returning to the iconic Olympic venue in Hyde Park. With all of that in store, the outlook for overall television growth is very positive.”

London Diamond League Tax Exemption May Lure Usain Bolt Back to Britain

Olympic champion Usain Bolt, who other than the Olympic games has avoided racing in the UK since 2009 due to tax rules, may return to British shores after goverment official George Osborne revealed they are planning to provide a “one-off” tax exemption.

The exemption will be for the London Diamond League event at the Olympic Stadium which is likely to interest a number of international athletes.

“The Government is determined to do everything possible to secure the Olympic legacy and I am delighted to grant this exemption,” the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, told Thursday’s Daily Telegraph.

The London meeting, switched from its traditional Crystal Palace home to the Olympic Stadium to mark the first anniversary of the Games on July 27, is expected to be a 80,000 sell-out and would have been damaged by the absence of athletes such as Bolt.

British tax rules mean that visiting overseas athletes would have paid tax on their earnings from the meeting but also on part of their global income including sponsorship deals.

Queensland Reds Named Most Supported Club in Brisbane

Queensland Reds have overtaken Brisbane Broncos in fan attendances in the Australian city of Brisbane.

The fan-pulling power of rugby league’s Brisbane Broncos has been eclipsed for the first time in the club’s 25-year history with rugby’s Queensland Reds now ruling the roost as crowd favourites in Brisbane.

In a measure of just how high the Reds have soared since they limped along unloved in 2009, the state’s surging Super Rugby team has won the code battle on the crowd front by finishing 2012 averaging 34,217 fans per game at Suncorp Stadium.

The Broncos were still the envy of NRL clubs around the country for drawing average crowds of 33,377 for the regular season at the same home ground.

Many rated it an idle fancy when Queensland Rugby Union chief executive Jim Carmichael said in February that outdrawing the Broncos was “not only a dream but something I think about all the time”.

“There is enough room for lots of parochial fans to get behind both rugby codes in Brisbane but I’m absolutely delighted that the Reds can say they have built such a regular following and built such an emotional connection with fans,” Mr Carmichael enthused.

A Reds team driven by heroes Will Genia, Digby Ioane and Quade Cooper has muscled to No.1 spot in terms of state footy crowds.

AFL’s Brisbane Lions (20,352) and Gold Coast Suns (13,645) are down the list while rugby league’s Gold Coast Titans (14,419) and North Queensland Cowboys (14,415) draw smaller average crowds.

Fan numbers following the Reds at Suncorp Stadium jumped 16 per cent on 2011 but the remarkable spike is measuring just where the code was at in 2009 when only three games were won.

Home crowds averaged just 18,646 per match that year so the exponential growth in support is at 83 per cent since those days of failure.

Reds coach Ewen McKenzie summed it up succinctly.

“It’s massive growth. We’ve come a long way to outdraw the Broncos,” said McKenzie, who backed the QRU’s membership drive which turned the meagre 6225 base of 2009 into a rousing membership of 32,640 this year.

Rugby’s first foray into hosting a Test on the Gold Coast is also shaping as a success with crowd expectations tracking beyond 20,000 for the Wallabies clash against Argentina at Robina’s Skilled Park on Saturday night.

Fußball-Bundesligisten Hannover 96″ ins Leben.
