Cricket’s MCC Corruption Beating Lie Detector Proposals

Introducing lie detectors into the game of sport is a radical suggestion to have been made in an attempt to beat corruption after a damaging year for cricket.

The Marylebone Cricket Club’s (MCC) World Cricket Committee, which includes former players such as Steve Waugh and Courtney Walsh, will put forward the proposals to the MCC Laws sub-committee for consideration in February. The recommendations will then be forwarded to the International Cricket Council (ICC) for approval.

The suggestion is just one of a number of ideas to have been generated including legalising and regulating betting markets in India, the inclusion of anti-corruption clauses in playing contracts, and the non-selection of so-called “tainted” players.

“The MCC World Cricket Committee has recommended that the laws of cricket be amended specifically to forbid the corruption or attempted corruption of any aspect of a match,” read a statement from the MCC.

The measures have been discussed in the wake of a scandal involving Pakistan trio Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif. The three players were suspended under the ICC anti-corruption code in September over allegations of spot-fixing.

The MCC statement continued: “The Committee is concerned at the scale of the problem, and the detrimental effect it has placed on the integrity of the game. The education of players should not be a meaningless formality; the message should be pressed home with regularity by figures known and respected by the players.”

Sacramento Kings Become First US Sports Team to Use Bitcoin

NBA franchise Sacramento Kings have become the first U.S. professional sports franchise to use unregulated online payment system Bitcoin, it was revealed.

Kings gear and other items are now available for purchase at the team’s retail store using bitcoins, an online currency bought and sold on a peer-to-peer network independent of central authority, the franchise said in a statement.

Starting on March 1, Kings fans will also be able to purchase tickets and pre-order merchandise using the virtual currency, the statement said.

The Kings’ managing partner, Vivek Ranadive, said the decision to accept bitcoins was part of a larger move by the Kings franchise toward becoming more technologically advanced, a process he called “NBA 3.0.”

“We are maniacally focused on creating the most seamless experience for our fans in all facets,” Ranadive said in a statement about his team’s new ties with Bitcoin.

“A major tenet of the NBA 3.0 philosophy is about utilizing technology for the betterment of the fan experience, and this is yet another step in that process,” he added.

Ranadive, a tech developer and philanthropist, leads a new ownership group that bought the Kings in May in a deal valuing the team at $535 million, following a tug-of-war with Seattle investors who wanted to move the team to the Pacific Northwest.

Since its launch in January 2009, the Bitcoin system has grown popular with people who lack confidence in the conventional banking system. It has also drawn concern over the potential for it to be used for money laundering.

The Kings will partner with Bitcoin processor Bitpay to turn the virtual currency into cash for the franchise, Ranadive said.

Rio 2016 Rugby Venue Changed

Rio 2016 Olympic Games organisers are already encountering problems after revealing that the rugby sevens competition may have to be moved from its scheduled venue.

Rio 2016 chiefs had wanted to play the rugby sevens at the Sao Januario Stadium – home of football club Vasco da Gama – but the tenants have failed to supply the necessary documents to the authorities.

The organising committee have now stated that the return of rugby to the Olympics could be now played at the main Joao Havelange Stadium which will also host the athletics.

“The Sao Januario Stadium had been identified by Rio 2016 as the potential Rugby Sevens venue, subject to delivery criteria being met,” said Rio 2016 organisers in a statement.

“The Clube de Regatas Vasco da Gama was requested, on 9 April, 2012, to provide detailed plans and all guarantees, including financial, related to the provision of the stadium under the conditions required by the IOC and the International Rugby Board (IRB) for the event by 31 October, 2012.

“As the documents requested were not received by the required deadline, Rio 2016 is now going to undertake a reassessment of the operational plans for the Joao Havelange Stadium, in conjunction with the IRB and the IOC, in order to ensure that rugby sevens’ Olympic Games debut is both successful and memorable.”

Rugby is back in the Olympics for the first time since 1924 but it will be a debut for the sevens format, and the International Rugby Board are keen for the competition to go off without a hitch.

With the sevens just taking two days it should not pose a problem to play the event in the opening week of the Rio Games before changing the stadium into an athletics venue, and the IRB are keeping close tabs on the situation.

“The IRB has been kept fully informed by Rio 2016 of the on-going discussions regarding the selection of the sports venue for the Olympic Games Rugby Sevens events,” said an IRB statement.

“The IRB will continue to work alongside Rio 2016 and the IOC to ensure the delivery of outstanding and successful rugby sevens events for teams, fans and the Olympic and rugby families.”

Ecclestone to Give Bahrain Extension on F1 Decision

Bernie Ecclestone, Formula One supremo, has insisted he is ready to give organisers of the postponed Bahrain Grand Prix more time to decide whether the race can take place later in the season after ut was called off due to political upheaval and violent protesting.

Motorsport’s governing body told Bahrain chiefs that they had until May 1 to confirm whether it would be able to stage a race later in the year. However, with the security situation in Bahrain still unpredictable, Ecclestone told Reuters that the Gulf state could be offered a few more weeks to decide.

Ecclestone stated: “We need to wait a little bit to see exactly how progress is made. I suppose we’d be safe by early June or something like that. Things can change in a couple of weeks…so you don’t know. All of a sudden everything might be peaceful in a month’s time and they are happy to run the event and so we are happy to be there.”

Meanwhile Ecclestone has reiterated that there are no plans to sell F1 to a consortium led by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.

“It (the speculation) is media driven,” he said. “It looks very much like someone who is trying to see if they can make (money). All of these people that get involved with these things, they get some victims and say, ‘we can make this happen, I’m sure we can do this’, and then all they do is keep pumping fees in.”
