More CFU Nations Admit Receiving Bribes-for-Votes

It has been revealed that at least four more Caribbean countries have admitted they were offered thousands of dollars in cash as bribes in exchange for their backing of former presidential candidate Mohamed Bin Hammam.

The investigation is ongoing into the scandal that led to the temporary suspensions of FIFA vice-president Jack Warner and Asian football chief Mohamed Bin Hammam and it has been reported that more and more federations who attended the infamous meeting on May 10 and 11 – where the money was allegedly paid – have now come forward and handed it back.

The countries concerned are not being named but follow last week’s frank admission by the president of Surinam’s soccer association Louis Giskus that his FA received $40,000 (£24,000) “in $100 bills in a brown envelope” when Caribbean Football Union (CFU) members convened in Trinidad, organised by Warner.

“We all saw the story about Surinam giving the money back and my understanding is that there are at least four more,” a reliable source close to the investigation told insideworldfootball, adding, “It could be as many as six.”

Meanwhile, in a letter to CONCACAF acting president Alfredo Hawit, Jerome Valcke, FIFA’s general secretary, insisted it was time for warring parties within the Confederation to resolve their differences.

According to Reuters, Valcke stated: “We believe it is important that as acting president, but also the CONCACAF Executive Committee and all relevant CONCACAF bodies, now focus on bringing back unity to CONCACAF. It goes without saying that FIFA is at your and CONCACAF’s disposal should you need any assistance or advice.”

“After a thorough analysis of the file in our possession, the bureau of the FIFA Legal Committee emphasised that the relevant steps and decisions taken within CONCACAF appear to be in line with the statutory provisions of CONCACAF,” Valcke added. “However, the bureau of the FIFA Legal Committee emphasised that all legal remedies must remain open to those who do not agree with any decisions taken against them, in line with the relevant articles of the CONCACAF statutes.”

Football’s world governing body FIFA has confirmed that its ethics investigator Michael Garcia has delivered his 350-page report on the bidding processes for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

In the wake of countless allegations of corruption and a year-long enquiry, several figures may now face disciplinary action when an adjudicatory chamber led by German judge Hans-Joachim Eckert decide on the consequences.

Dutch FA Looks to Launch New Video Technology System

The Dutch FA are looking to introduce a new video technology system which would allow managers to halt play and challenge one contentious decision against their side in each half.

The organisation, which has he support of the English FA, will present their ideas to the International Football Association Board.

The new process will require a video official within the stadium to advise the referee on a decision with the help of replayed footage.

The scheme was secretly tested in the Netherlands during the previous campaign as officials located inside the particular ground were able to pin-point what decisions they would have made differently.

KNVB spokesman Koen Adriaanse told the Sunday Mirror: “The proposal was tried out in 24 games last season, with video referees highlighting incidents in which they would have been able to assist match officials.

“It was found to be a big opportunity to help referees and their assistants.

“There was a lot of interest in the experiment from the FAs of England, Germany and the United States – and we have their support to make an official proposal.

“The next step will be to see how the system works at youth or Under-21 level and if it’s a success, then it could be introduced into senior football.”

The KNVB’s head of referees, Dick van Egmond, was also encouraged by FIFA’s reaction to the proposal.

“We’ve received a positive answer from FIFA on our request for an experiment in video referees being used in official matches,” he said.

“It is true, that in our plans, the managers from both teams can each challenge one referee decision in the first half and in the second half of each game.”
