FIFA to Hear Bin Hammam Bribery Case on July 23-24

World soccer’s governing body FIFA has revealed that it’s ethics committee will meet on July 22 and 23 to hear the case against Mohamed bin Hammam, who has been suspended on bribery charges.

The Qatari faces allegations of corruption, including claims he “bought” the 2022 World Cup for Qatar, which he denies.

The investigation has finished and a report has been sent to the suspended Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president who received sanctions alongside FIFA vice president Jack Warner, who has since resigned.

Caribbean Football Union (CFU) officials Debbie Minguell and Jason Sylvester will also have their cases heard.

The charges relate to a meeting of 25 associations of the CFU in May, where it is alleged bribes of US$40,000 were paid or offered to each by Bin Hammam, who was then campaigning for the FIFA presidency against incumbent Sepp Blatter.

A statement from FIFA read: “The FIFA ethics committee will meet on 22 and 23 July to examine the cases of Mohamed bin Hammam, Debbie Minguell and Jason Sylvester, who were provisionally suspended by the ethics committee on 29 May 2011 in relation to an alleged breach of the FIFA code of ethics and the FIFA disciplinary code.

“The three officials have received the report on the investigations conducted by the ethics committee since 29 May, and have been invited to present their position in writing prior to the meeting of 22 July.

“The hearings with Mohamed bin Hammam, Debbie Minguell and Jason Sylvester will take place on 22 July, when the parties as well as the ethics committee also have the opportunity to call on potential witnesses.

“On 23 July, the ethics committee will deliberate and decide on the cases.”

Didier Drogba to Speak at Global Sports Forum Barcelona

English soccer club Chelsea forward and Ivory Coast national team captain Didier Drogba, one of the most influential players on and off the pitch on the planet, will be at the Global Sports Forum Barcelona.

The Ivorian’s charity work and strive for peace in his homeland started in 2006, when he played a vital role in bringing peace to his country by making a desperate plea to the combatants, asking them to lay down their arms, a plea which was answered with a cease fire after 5 years of civil war. Drogba later helped move an African Cup of Nations qualifier to the rebel stronghold of Bouake; a move that helped confirm the peace process.

His involvement in the peace process lead to Drogba being named as one of the world’s 100 most influential people by Time magazine and was appointed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as a Goodwill Ambassador.

Drogba’s charity work continued when, in late 2009, he announced he would be donating the 3 million GBP signing on fee for his endorsement of Pepsi for the construction of a hospital in his hometown of Abidjan. This work was done through Drogba’s recently created “Didier Drogba Foundation”.

Drogba has accepted the invitation from the Global Sports Forum Barcelona and will attend the session: “Good citizen; good business: Applying commercial principles to social responsibility”, alongside another football star, Raï.

FIFA Gives Backing to Russia’s Staging of 2018 World Cup

FIFA President Sepp Blatter has revealed the organisation is fully behind Russia’s staging of the 2018 World Cup and has praised its preparations.

“FIFA unconditionally supports the staging of the World Cup by Russia,” he told the R-Sport news agency in comments translated into Russian.

Diplomatic sources said last month that European nations were discussing a British-backed plan to boycott President Vladimir Putin’s showpiece staging of the World Cup because of the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

“A boycott will never give any positive effect,” Blatter said, adding: “We trust the country, its government.”

“Russia is the world’s biggest country. You know, Russia is in the eye of the international media. Football can not only unite Russia but show the whole world that it is stronger that any protest movement,” Blatter said.

He compared the situation with Russia’s hosting of the Winter Olympics in the Black Sea resort of Sochi this year, when Western leaders stayed away.

“There was the same situation ahead of Sochi, but neither during nor after the games, has there been a single word against these games.”

Blatter said that he was happy with Russia’s progress in its preparations for hosting the 2018 World Cup.

“I can say that in comparison with Brazil, Russia is considerably ahead of schedule with four years remaining before the event’s start,” Blatter said.

Blatter came to Moscow to participate in a ceremony to present the 2018 World Cup logo.

The FIFA boss added that the opening ceremony of the 2018 World Cup could take place a day ahead of the tournament’s opening match kick-off.

“It’s possible,” he said.

“We tried to do that at the 2006 World Cup in Germany but it didn’t work well.

“But I’m confident that in 2018 the ceremony should go off earlier. There are three stadiums in Moscow where we can hold the event’s opening ceremony.”

English & French Rugby Clubs Confirm Exodus from Heineken Cup

Major rugby clubs in England and France have exited the Heineken Cup to form a new competition called the Rugby Champions Cup.

In an expected change the Aviva Premiership and Top 14 sides have been threatening the exodus as they weren’t happy with the current structure of the Heineken Cup which is organised by the ERC.

The clubs were insisting all teams – not just the English and French – should have to qualify to play in the top European competition.

Only the top six in the English and French leagues are guaranteed a place in the Heineken Cup, whereas at least 10 RaboDirect PRO12 sides – including both Scottish, both Italian and a minimum of three each from Wales and Ireland – have a free pass into the competition.

This season, of the 12 PRO12 sides, only Newport Gwent Dragons missed out on the Heineken Cup.

The Aviva Premiership teams and Top 14 teams say the Welsh, Scottish, Irish and Italians will all be invited to enter the new competition.

A Premiership Rugby statement said: “The competition will be based on the principles of qualification on merit, a strong competition format, equality between the leagues, higher commercial values for the teams and expansion into new European markets.

“The Top 14 and Premiership Rugby clubs have already confirmed their participation in the new competition and a joint working group has been created to prepare all necessary elements in good time for the 2014/15 season.”

Pro12 Teams Look to Join

Premiership Rugby chief executive Mark McCafferty said they have received approaches from RaboDirect PRO12 teams expressing interest in joining the breakaway competition.

“Before we can release more details we need to know over the next few weeks which other teams will be joining the competition,” McCafferty said.

“We expect those discussions to continue over the next few weeks. Once we know the final, or close to final, numbers then we settle on the competition formats.

“Various people have approached us about the possibility of joining and we’ve indicated to them that we’ll keep their names confidential.

“We’ve heard that other people want to be involved in European competitions, that’s why we’ve left the door open and expect it to be more than an Anglo-French competition.

“Once people saw on September 10 that we would seek an alternative, interest has been expressed in at least knowing exactly what will be involved – the format, commercial and financial details as well.”

It remains to be seen whether the Rugby Football Union will back the breakaway competition but McCafferty is expecting their support.

“We’re asking for the RFU’s support against the background that there will be no ERC competition in which we’re taking part at the end of the season. We need to put in place new competitions,” McCafferty said.

“We ultimately expect to have RFU support and it’s in the interests of English rugby to have the teams playing in a good competition at the end of the season.

“If that scenario occurs where the RFU oppose what we’re doing, we’d have to look at the reasons for opposing it.”

FFR Against Move

Any new competition will need approval from the English and French national federations and a statement from the French Rugby Federation (FFR) indicated they are not willing to lend their support.

“No meeting or international competition involving French clubs can be organised outside the framework of the FFR and without its prior agreement,” the FFR statement read.

“The FFR has always been and will remain a major player in the European cups organised by ERC and backs proposals to permit the continuity and development of these.

“If the FFR is in favour of an improvement in the European cups, their organisation can only be envisaged under the edict of the European federations which make up ERC.

“The statement released by the clubs appears therefore irrelevant and inappropriate.”

Indonesian Open Returns to Asian Tour

The Indonesian Golf Association (PGI), discount Asian Tour and IMG have signed a landmark three-year agreement to stage the Indonesian Open from 2013 onwards, officials announced today.

The new partnership will focus on elevating the stature of the Indonesian Open into one of the most prestigious national championships on the Asian Tour, which is the official sanctioning body for professional golf in Asia.

The Indonesian Open has been played under the OneAsia umbrella in the last few years but now reverts to the Asian Tour. The last time the event was played as an Asian Tour event was when Thongchai Jaidee was victorious in 2009.

While OneAsia has suffered a setback there, their fortunes have been boosted by the fact that the opening two events of their season (The Indonesian PGA and the Thailand Open) are now fully co-sanctioned with the Japan Golf Tour, extending the Japan Tour season and providing OneAsia players the opportunity to leapfrog their way on the Japan Golf Tour.

As a full member of the International Federation of PGA Tours, all Asian Tour tournaments receive the highest allocation of Official World Golf Ranking points in the region.

With golf returning to the Olympic Games in 2016, the exciting development will provide a clear pathway for Indonesian golfers to try and play their way to Rio de Janeiro in four years’ time through the accumulation of Official World Golf Ranking points.

The return of the Indonesian Open onto the Asian Tour platform will see the country welcoming an array of stars from the Asian Tour whose members hail from nearly 30 different nationalities. This will ensure a truly cosmopolitan field when the 2013 Indonesian Open is staged in the second half of 2013. The venue and tournament dates will be announced at a later time.

By being on the Asian Tour’s television platform, the Indonesian Open will beamed to over 200 countries and 650 million homes around the world, ensuring that Indonesia’s golf credentials are promoted extensively through the championship.

The Indonesian Golf Association (PGI) President Arifin Panigoro said: “On behalf of PGI, we are delighted to announce that we have entered into a partnership with the Asian Tour and IMG which will benefit our country immensely through a myriad of wonderful opportunities for junior development, the golfing industry and tourism in this country.

“This agreement marks a new dawn for our national championship and we are convinced the staging of the Indonesian Open in 2013 and beyond will be hugely successful so that the entire golfing fraternity in Indonesia will be proud of our flagship tournament.

“Through our association with the Asian Tour, we believe this will also mark the start of our quest to push the leading Indonesian golfers towards qualification for the Olympic Games in 2016. We are looking forward to exciting times for the PGI and the Indonesian Open.”

Asian Tour Executive Chairman Kyi Hla Han said: “The Indonesian Open has always been one of the finest golf championships in Asia where our leading stars such as Thaworn Wiratchant, winner of the 2012 Asian Tour Order of Merit, and Thongchai Jaidee have won the tournament in the past.

“We are excited to have this opportunity to work closely with the PGI and we believe the Indonesian Open is right up there amongst the best of national Opens in Asia. Our players enjoy visiting Indonesia as the golf courses, facilities and hospitality are first class and we look forward to returning for the 2013 Indonesian Open.

”Through this new partnership, it will create the opportunity for Indonesian players to advance their golf careers and develop their games to a higher level in view of the qualification process for the 2016 Olympics. We believe the Indonesian Open will also provide the catalyst for more Indonesian players to compete on the Asian Tour.”

Grant Slack, Senior Vice President, IMG Golf said: “We are very much looking forward to working with the PGI and our partners, the Asian Tour, to develop the Indonesia Open into one of Asia finest tournaments. We believe the players will really enjoy adding Indonesia to their schedules. It is a wonderful country to visit with fantastic golf courses and facilities and we look forward to delivering an Indonesian Open that will truly showcase all that Indonesia has to offer the global golf market.”
