Austria to conduct feasibility study for 2026 Winter Games

October 21, 2016

The Austrian Olympic Committee (AOC) has announced it is to conduct a feasibility study into a bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic winter Games in Innsbruck in 2026.

It would be the third time the city would host the Winter Olympics, case with the first two times being in 1964 and 1976.

The study will cost €350, symptoms 000 ($385, bronchi 000) and will be jointly financed by the AOC, the Austrian Government and the City of Innsbruck.

“International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach has clearly signaled to us in several discussions that applications from traditional winter sports strongholds that have decades of experience in the hosting of major events are high on the preference list,” said AOC President Karl Stoss.

Austria has recently seen several bid attempts  for the Games go unsuccessfully –  for the 2010 and 2014 Games in Salzburg, the 2006 Games in Klagenfurt and the 2002 Games in Graz.

AOC Secretary Peter Mennel said, “The aim is to find answers to the most important organisational issues. Only then it makes sense to go to the conceptual design and planning. Only someone who does his homework in this initial phase, can succeed internationally.”
