February 20, 2017

The Australian Football League (AFL) has revealed that it suffered a net loss of around AUS17m in 2016. The Australian rules football competition has stated that a loss was expected in this year’s budget.

Expenditure for the year increased, with the AFL citing the purchase of Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium and the launch of the AFL Women’s competition as reasons for the extra outgoings.

The league’s revenue in 2016 increased, while its operating surplus before grants and distributions decreased by two per cent.

The AFL confirmed that it provided over AUS10m more to its clubs than in 2015.
