January 8, 2016
South American countries Argentina and Uruguay will bid to jointly host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the presidents of the two Football Associations have confirmed.
Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri and Uruguay’s President Tabare Vazquez officially made the announcement to the press on Thursday.
The 2030 World Cup will mark the 100-year anniversary of the first World Cup, which was staged in Uruguay, where the hosts defeated Argentina 4-2 in the final to lift the trophy.
Speaking at a news conference in Uruguay, Argentina president Mauricio Macri said: “We have decided that our best opportunity is to jointly nominate ourselves as candidates.
“We are many years out, but there are many things to plan and prepare ahead of time. Many times, we have faced problems in our history, due to a lack of planning.”
FIFA will select the hosts for the 2026 and 2030 World Cups in 2018.
The next World Cup, in 2018, will be held in Russia, with Qatar staging the 2022 tournament.
