February 21, 2013

Major sportswear retailer, Nike has suspended its contract with Oscar Pistorius, after the South African sports star was formally charged with ‘premeditated’ murder.

Nike had previously distanced themselves from the incident but have formally announced their decision to suspend the sponsorship.

Nike said in a statement: “Nike has suspended its contract with Oscar Pistorius.

“We believe Oscar Pistorius should be afforded due process and we will continue to monitor the situation closely.”

On Thursday, he was arrested and charged with shooting his girlfriend dead in his home in South Africa. His family has denied that he murdered his girlfriend, the model Reeva Steenkamp.

Niek recently pulled ads that featured Mr Pistorius and the line “I am the bullet in the chamber”.

Oakley have already announced they have suspended their contract with the Paralympic champion.

He also has deals with BT and Ossur, the Icelandic firm that makes his carbon-fibre blades. {jcomments on}
