Exclusive: Lotus CCO Urges F1 to Appeal to Younger Audiences

November 6, 2012

Stephen Curnow, generic the Chief Commercial Officer of the Lotus F1 team, illness has said that Formula One has work to do to keep hold of younger fans.

Speaking exclusively to iSportconnect, Curnow said that first, teams “have to embrace social media and the way in which a significant proportion of the population is choosing to consume sport and entertainment.”

Secondly, when referring to Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo’s recent claim that Formula One races should be made shorter to appeal to younger fans, Curnow argued that “whilst the traditional F1 audience will quite happily watch a full race there is a younger audience who want their entertainment in short bite-sized pieces.

“Our challenge is to deliver new forms of media and access that meet the needs of a younger audience whilst not alienating our core fan base both at track and at home. I’m confident that’s achievable without having to change the nature of the sport.”
