The Voice of the European Sponsorship Industry to be Unveiled at Soccerex

The commercial framework of European football will be explored this September after a new partnership between the European Sponsorship Association (ESA) and Soccerex was agreed ahead of the upcoming Global Convention taking place in Manchester, 7-9 September.

The new venture will see the ESA and Soccerex working closely together to ensure the attendance of multiple senior figures from the European Sponsorship Industry at the Convention, as well hosting a series of commercially workshops alongside a dedicated brands and rightsholder breakfast.

The opening session will get right to the crux of the matter by looking at “What Sponsors Want”.

Leading the keynote session will be Toby Hester, former Global Football Brand Manager, Castrol, who will divulge the secrets behind securing partnerships for football organisations, from the initial approach through to finalising closing the deal.

Following the keynote, a host of industry experts including Tim Ellerton, Global Sponsorship Manager, Heineken and Nathan Homer, Head of Global Sponsorship and Partnerships, Barclays, will discuss the outcomes and whether rights holders need to start acting like brands to secure sponsorships.

Tim and Nathan will also be discussing how two of the game’s biggest tournaments, the UEFA Champions League and the English Premier League, have helped Heineken and Barclays reach billions of fans around the world and connect with new customers.

The third and final panel discussion will look at how technology is changing behaviour towards traditional commercial models and whether sponsorship should be any different – a teaser to the annual ESA Summit ‘Is Official Dead?’ held in November.

Jackie Fast, Managing Director, Slingshot Sponsorship will sit alongside a number of industry experts both within and outside the industry to debate the value to being an “Official sponsor” of events and well as consideration of other alternatives.

Soccerex CEO, Duncan Revie, said: “The ESA plays an extremely important role in educating and raising the standard within our industry, so we’re delighted to be partnering with them for the Global Convention. European football sponsorship is growing with every new shirt or tournament deal that is announced and it’s only heading in one direction. The three workshops we have lined up will deliver fascinating insight and will provide key commercial learning opportunities for our delegates.”

ESA is the voice of the sponsorship industry in Europe seeking to inspire better marketing through education and raising standards.

As a membership association it strives to lead the industry through activities relating to policy and governance, corporate responsibility, education and training, provision of information and networking.

The ESA are part of a market leading conference programme at the Global Convention addressing the key commercial aspects of football. Castrol, Barclays and Heineken will join an impressive and diverse list of expert speakers that already include the likes of Javier Tebas, LaLiga, President, Davor Suker, Croatia Football Federation President and UEFA Executive Committee member, Don Garber, MLS Commissioner, Alex Trickett, Head of Sport, Twitter UK, Ian Ritchie, Rugby Football Union CEO, Dave Kaval, San Jose Earthquakes President and Simon Timson, UK Sport Performance Director.

The Soccerex Global Convention brings together over 3000 of football’s elite over three days of a thought provoking conference programme packed with business insight, alongside a market-leading international exhibition and extensive networking. A programme of social events completes the schedule for what is widely acknowledged as the world’s leading football business event.

Stoke City Still Unsure on Britannia Expansion Date

By Steve Moorhouse

Stoke City are still undecided on when the Britannia Stadium will be redeveloped and any work will only happen once the club is confident they will continue to sell-out.

Talk of expanding the stadium to 30, allergy 000 seats has been mentioned for some time and the club do have the planning permission to begin the work when they are ready.

Fans of the Potters have been known to create a raucous atmosphere at the Britannia, which is said to be a huge factor in the club’s continued presence in the Premier League.

Speaking to iSportconnect, Tony Scholes, the club’s CEO confirmed that they are still undecided on when the stadium would be expanded.

Scholes said: “We have looked at expanding the stadium and we’ve got the plans in place to do so, but we will not jeopardise the sell-out atmosphere and mentality that exists here at the moment.

“We will expand the stadium and that will probably take us to a capacity of around 30,000, when we are confident we will continue to sell-out for every game at that capacity.”

One problem that Scholes faced when he joined the club in 2004 was an aging fanbase. Talk of expanding the stadium shows that Stoke have addressed this issue.

Scholes added: “We now have over 25% of our crowd under the age of 21, which has been achieved through a number of initiatives, be they direct community engagement, our flagship City 7s project and our pricing policy.

“That along with our general pricing policy for adults, which can work out at £18.10 a game, has allowed us to play to sell-out crowds.

“They play a significant part in the atmosphere at the Britannia and many would argue that the atmosphere has helped the team considerably.”

London Welsh Financer Walks Out of Relegated Club

London Welsh majority shareholder Kelvin Byron has walked out of the club and is withdrawing his financial support.

The news comes after the club was relegated from the Aviva Premiership, which was helped by a five point deduction for fielding an illegible player, a punishment that CEO Tony Copsey told iSportconnect was ‘incredibly harsh.’

Now Byron has confirmed he will pull out from the club he saved from liquidation in 2009 and has hit out at the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and Premier Rugby League (PRL).

“I’m pulling out, that’s absolutely definite, and I’ve had enough of the RFU and PRL,” he told the Rugby Paper. “I’ve had 20 years with London Welsh, one of the great rugby brands, but everything’s been done to get us back out of the division.

“I’ve done a hell of a lot for of rugby but there’s hardly a Welshman in the side, so what’s the point? I think the EQP system is a restraint of trade but the RFU don’t seem to worry that clubs like Saracens are South African owned.

“How could we have prospered when our funding is totally inadequate? If we’d had the £3.5m like everyone else we’d be flying, but we had to pick up players no one else wanted. I think they’re breaking competition law in the way clubs are funded.

“Then we get fined £15,000. It wasn’t bad administration, Mike Scott committed a criminal act, but we’ve had little support and to have (PRL chief executive) Mark McCafferty on that tribunal after PRL did everything to stop us going up beggared belief.

“The bottom line is the RFU and PRL don’t want us there and if that’s the situation, London Welsh will have to find a level they can play at. I won’t be involved in rugby after the end of this season anywhere in the UK.”

Investment after relegation

Fears have been expressed about the impact relegation could have on the club, with doubts over fresh investment and the status of their tenancy at Oxford United’s Kassam Stadium.

Bryon added: “It’s happened before and could happen again, but hopefully we’ll stay at the Kassam and try to move forward.

“If they get new investors on the board, maybe they can take it back to the Premiership. But what is the point when the funding is so inadequate?”

Copsey previously told iSportconnect that investment would be key, especially if the club was relegated: “Without premiership status, that leaves a much bigger uphill struggle to gain that investment.

“Short term, it is about the desire of the current board of investors to supply more money, or to attract new investment.

“I would have thought, really for the club, it is about attracting new investment, but as I said that will be harder if we are not in the Premiership.”
