Three Brazil 2014 Stadiums to Miss FIFA Deadline

The organisation of the Brazil 2014 World Cup was called into question again after reports emerged that three stadiums being built for the tournament would miss FIFA’s end of the year deadline.

Cuiaba’s Arena Pantanal, Arena da Baixada in Curitiba and Sao Paulo’s Arena Corinthians are all going to miss the 31 December deadline.

The news is another set-back after two workers died after a crane accident at the stadium in Sao Paulo last month.

Arena Pantanal has abandoned its plan to have a retractable roof whilst the 41,000 capacity Arena da Baixada is also behind schedule.

FIFA General Secretary, Jerome Valcke said: “We don’t know when the green light [to resume work] will be given [in Sao Paolo].

“We are not in a crisis mood, looking at an alternative to Sao Paulo but Curitiba is facing the most problems and clearly won’t be delivered before February 2014.

“The people from Curitiba attended a meeting [on Monday] and promised to organise themselves to get the stadium ready by the end of February 2014.”

On the deaths in Sao Paulo, FIFA President Sep Blatter said: “We’re feeling sad for the families. Sao Paulo will be ready for the opening match.

“We deplore the loss of the two people who lost their lives.”

Exclusive: UK Engagement for Euroleague Final Four Tournament ‘higher than expected’

By Steve Moorhouse

The amount of tickets purchased by British fans who saw Olympiacos take the Euroleague Final Four title at The O2 in London was higher than the organisers expected.

The O2 hosted the Final Four on Friday 10 May and Sunday 12 May which was sold out at a 16,145 capacity.

It was the first time Euroleague Basketball had been witnessed on British soil and figures showed that 30% of tickets were bought through the UK ticket store.

Speaking exclusively to iSportconnect, Alex Ferrer Kristjansson, Brand and Communication Director at Euroleague expressed his delight at the figures: “We are definitely happy with the figures. That is a very similar percentage to local fans that bought tickets in all the Final Fours where there was no local team participating.

“That’s a very good result and even higher than would be expected.”

As well as hosting the tournament, Euroleague set-up a Fan Zone in Trafalgar Square to help promote the brand and created grassroots programmes with Premier League teams Tottenham Hotspur, QPR and Charlton Athletic, as well as the British Basketball League (BBL).

Kristjansson said that the progress made was good but was only a ‘little step’ to breaking the UK.

He added: “Having it at the O2 was nice but it was not our end goal. We had to present the event and make the UK people experience Euroleague through the Final Four and the event at Trafalgar Square.

“That gave local fans the chance to experience what Euroleague is and what the Final Four is.

“We also wanted key business people from the industry to attend the games. We invited lots of companies and agencies to experience the Final Four and that was important for us.”

The Final Four was broadcast in 199 countries across the world, by more than 70 broadcasters.

Kristjansson confirmed that Euroleague Basketball would be back in the UK, but it was too early to say when and if it would be the Final Four again.

Euroleague were also involved with the latest iSportconnect Directors’ Club, which was held before the semi-final on Friday.

Meet the fantasy stars of Europe at the Betting on Football conference

Daily fantasy sports (DFS) has long been big business across the pond, but it’s yet to gain similar popularity in Europe. This could all be set to change however, with more DFS operators launching on these shores and those already here signing some impressive partnerships with football clubs and notable sporting brands.

Eilers Research CEO Todd Eilers estimated last year “that daily games will generate around $2.6 billion in entry fees this year and grow 41% annually, reaching $14.4 billion in 2020.” This is down to its huge popularity in the US and the success of the likes of DraftKings and FanDuel, though the current legal battles could hit both these companies and numerous other operators stateside hard.

DraftKings recently launched in the UK with Jimmy Bullard as brand ambassador. FanDuel is going the same route and is in the process of obtaining a UK gambling licence. They join a range of DFS operators in the UK such as FanFeud, Mondogoal, FantasyBet, Oulala and more. Premier League clubs Leicester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Watford, Spurs, Chelsea, West Ham and West Brom all now have an official fantasy sports partner.

The growing number of opportunities will be discussed on the fantasy sports panel at Betting on Football, which takes place at Stamford Bridge, home of Chelsea FC, on April 21st. Central figures from the industry will tackle the following topic: ‘Fantasy Stars – Will Euro 2016 herald the dawn of DFS in Europe?’

Valery Bollier, CEO of Oulala, Trevor Keane, Founder and CEO of Sportego and FanFeudViktor Enoksen, Co-Founder at FantasyBet, and Richard Graham, International Director at Mondogoal (and former CEO of Commonwealth Games England), will be moderated by Simon Burrell, Head of Global Business Development at Editec, and form a highly knowledgeable panel in what looks set to be one of the day’s highlights.

Mondogoal boasts partnerships with three Premier League clubs in the form of West Ham, Spurs, and Chelsea, in addition to Barcelona, Roma and Valencia. The company also recently agreed a deal with Sports Interactive, and became the first daily fantasy sports operator to offer contests in the Chinese Super League, the Russian Premier League and the Turkish Super League.

Sportego and FanFeud, meanwhile, have signed deals with West Brom, Birmingham City, Cardiff, Chesterfield, and Bury to give each a bespoke club fantasy gaming product. Oulala is partnered with current Premier League leaders, Leicester City.

Trevor Keane had this to say ahead of the panel: “Fantasy Sports is entering an exciting period in the UK and Europe and Sportego is at the forefront of that revolution. Football and betting have a long history in the UK, and it’s one that is about to be turned on its head with the increasing popularity of daily fantasy football. I think fantasy football needs to have a voice at conferences such as this and I am glad to be involved in a fantasy football dedicated panel being part of that message.”

Oulala’s Valery Bollier had this to add on the mammoth potential of DFS in Europe compared to the USA: “The success of fantasy sports in the States was huge, yet limited to domestic sports such as baseball, American football and ice hockey. However, when talking about football clubs, the epicentre of the world is Europe, where European teams include even the best Brazilian, Cameroon, and South Korean players.

Therefore, the entire planet will soon want to play on a European Fantasy Football platform. Operators should embrace it, and we at Oulala, are more than willing to show them our B2B solution. I am happy to be part of this year’s #bofcon because it is the ideal place to discuss the rise of DFS in Europe with iGaming operators.”

Finally, Viktor Enoksen of FantasyBet commented: “I was involved in fantasy betting back when FanDuel’s biggest games had $1,000 prize pools compared to the $5,000,000 games they are running now. Hopefully I will be able to share some insight and answer a few questions people might have.”

Betting on Football is a one-day conference at Stamford Bridge, home of Chelsea FC, on April 21st 2016. Tickets are available here.
