One of the obstacles which the UIPM has faced in growing the sport relates to its high-end nature with an equestrian element. “We don’t have mass participation in the pure Olympic version of our sport,” said UIPM Vice President Martin Dawe. “We’re never going to have that. But we have been doing innovative things to grow our offer with new disciplines.”

UIPMSPONSORS3

One of these is biathlete, a run-swim-run competition, which has been part of the calendar since 1999. Another newer discipline is called laser run. It’s a running and shooting competition similar to the winter biathlon. The first world championship test event was held in Perpignan (France) last September with a mass participation event on Saturday and the elite competition on Sunday.

Interestingly, laser run actually has grown out of the re-formatting of the Olympic version which the UIPM has done over the years as it has fought successfully to remain part of the Summer Games programme. The shooting and running elements, once conducted separately, are now combined in the Olympic competition.

“Laser run has incredible potential,” Dawe said. “It can be held in a city centre and can offer sponsors a whole new kind of value.”

UIPMSPONSOR1

The UIPM’s current main sponsors are New Balance, Lufthansa and RAM Swiss watches. One of the UIPM’s strong points for sponsors is its dependable image, Dawe said. “We certainly uphold the Olympic ideal. We’re perceived to be clean and ethical. Another strong point is that our target demographic is quite high. That can be an advantage for certain brands.”

Looking ahead to the Olympic Games four months away, the official Rio 2016 Modern Pentathlon Test Event took place in Brazil from March 10-14. The event was also the second stage of the UIPM 2016 World Cup.

Tokyo 2020 Committee Hits Back at Allegations of Bribery Surrounding Olympic Bid

The Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee has denied allegations of bribery in the bidding process to secure the 2020 Olympic Games, clinic which featured in the latest World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) report into doping in athletics.

The report claims that a sponsorship fee of $4 or $5 million was paid to gain the support of former IAAF president Lamine Diack ahead of Turkish city Istanbul.

It states: “Transcripts of the various discussions between Turkish individuals with KD [Khalil Diack] make reference to a discussion regarding the Olympic city bidding process for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

“It is stated that Turkey lost LD’s [Lamine Diack’s] support because they did not pay sponsorship moneys of $4m-$5m either to the Diamond League or IAAF. According to the transcript the Japanese did pay such a sum.

“The 2020 Games were awarded to Tokyo. The IC did not investigate this matter further for it was not within our remit.”

Tokyo 2020 spokesperson Hikariko Ono released a statement which said: “The note in the report is beyond our understanding.”

“The Games were awarded to Tokyo because the city presented the best bid. Tokyo’s bid was about Japan’s commitment to address issues around the integrity of sport.”

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is believed to be ready to investigate this allegation and has asked WADA for the transcripts which it refers to in its report.

In a statement to the Associated Press the IOC said: “We have already asked the Independent Commission for the transcript so that we can better understand the context and the claims being made.”

“Bye bye, Fifa presidency”, Platini Withdraws From Election

Suspensed UEFA president Michel Platini has officially withdrawn his candidacy to become the next president of FIFA.

The Frenchman, along with Sepp Blatter, has been banned from all football-related activities for eight years after receving a ‘disloyal payment’ from the Swiss of £1.3 million.

Despite both men appealing the bans, Platini has decided the timing of the election, which takes place on 26 February, means he won’t be able to run.

“I’m withdrawing from the race for the Fifa presidency,” Platini told the Associated Press.

“The timing is not good for me. I don’t have the means to fight on equal terms with the other candidates.

“I have not been given the chance to play the game. Bye bye, Fifa. Bye bye, Fifa presidency.”

Even though he has given up on the FIFA presidency, the 60-year-old refuses to give up on clearing his name of any wrongdoing and still plans to take his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

“I’ve spent more time in hearing rooms than on football pitches speaking about 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 or football news,” Platini added.

“I’m taking this philosophically. Let’s wait and see what happens. But injustice is revolting me and I’m trying to fight it.”

Yokohama Hires WePlay for Social Media Brand Development Following Chelsea Sponsorship

Yokohama, the Japanese tyre company, is looking to digital sports agency WePlay to get a grip online as it aims to capitalise on its sponsorship deal with Chelsea FC.

Amid speculation of a potential release date, the new kit was unveiled recently during a press conference at Stamford Bridge.

Yokohama is hopeful that the unveiling will mark the beginning of a new relationship between them and the Chelsea FC global fan base.

Making the unknown, known

“From our initial discussions, WePlay will do just that and more, and we look forward to seeing how our first forays go down with football fans.”

Luca Massaro, CEO of WePlay, concludes: “A lot of people will be curious to find out more about the company, especially when they see the name Yokohama Tyres sprawled across the front of one of England’s most successful football clubs.

“We’re looking forward to helping Yokohama capitalise on the influx of interest their agreement with last year’s Premier League champions will bring and showing them the full potential of social media.”
