Will the US be bowled over by the CPL?

As the scramble to establish the dominant global Twenty20 league continues, the Caribbean Premier League continues to be the forefront of the movement.

It has become a global phenomenon since it emerged in 2013 and it could be moving to a new level in 2016 when they play in the United States.

It will be an interesting task, cricket is near the back of the queue for sports that interest American fans.

But with a clamour for cricket to appear in the Olympics, could we about to see a major breakthrough?

Damien O’Donohoe is the Chairman of the CPL, he explains why they have chosen now to make the move to the American market.

“The US has always been in our plans from day one, it’s been a massive sports market that has been deprived of cricket. There’s a large market and we felt we were in a great position to play games there; it’s very difficult to build a league from scratch with no players, where as we have players, we’re on the same time zone, so we saw it as a very suitable fit and an interesting extension of our brand.”

“You can see cricket is growing in the US, look at the Warne and Tendulkar showcase, I know it was only a showcase, it was legends and I don’t think that is sustainable long-term because it’s not high-end professional cricket but we have the best players in the world.”

“The American’s love seeing new things but they want to see people who are the best in the world and that is what we do. We bring a great party to anywhere we play and even for non-cricket fans they can come and enjoy the day out.”

While they will begin with the first fixture in Florida, O’Donohoe believes that this is the starting point and he has already mapped out target areas for future matches or even potentially franchises.

“Obviously the only stadium available at the moment is Fort Lauderdale. It’s interesting looking at our ticket sales, about 50% of our ticket sales have come from New York and I think 30% from Toronto, so I think if we were to extend in the US it would be in them markets.

“If we get to the stage of opening franchises it would be in them areas.”

CPL1

One of the benefits of playing a fixture in the US is opening the sport up to sponsorship from further afield.

This is something that the CPL are hoping to achieve and are hoping that sponsors will flock to them if the match in Florida proves to be a success.

“I think what will be a challenge in the first year from a sponsorship point of view will be that we are the first professional league to play there, but we’re hoping to sign with two sponsors in the next couple of days. People want to see things work first before they sign up so I think that our discussions post-event will be interesting in terms of sponsorship.”

Aside from the US, O’Donohoe spoke about other areas of interest. Asia and India appear to be the biggest areas of interest with talks already underway.

“We’ve been approached by Hong Kong and Singapore, with the franchise model we have, we want to look at this seriously.

“India is such a crucial part of cricket’s success, so there is interest from India, we are putting games on at 9 o’clock at night so people in India can wake up to the CPL, we’re really building our profile in India, so I think it would be smart to look at games on their time zone and build our profile and market share.“

Expanding into new markets is definitely something that is being discussed across all sports, with the NFL playing regular season games in the UK, the NBA playing pre-season games across the globe and the Premier League having spoken about having a 39th game played internationally.

McLaren report reveals widespread Russian doping at Sochi

An independent World Anti Doping Authority claims there was widespread state-sponsored doping by the Russians at the Sochi winter Olympics.

The McLaren report, authored by Canadian law professor Richard McLaren, gave a damning verdict on how Russian samples were removed from the anti-doping system in Sochi, and at the track and field world championships in Moscow in 2013. Now Russia’s participation at the Olympics in Rio are in serious doubt.

The report claims authorities “operated a unique sample swapping methodology to enable doped Russian athletes to compete at Games” to ensure positive samples were removed from the process. Also that, that the Russian sports ministry “directed, controlled and oversaw” manipulation of athlete’s analytical results or sample swapping.

The scale of the doping McLaren outlined was truly astonishing – 643 positive samples were removed from the system from 2012 to 2015.

As many as 30 sports were affected, but most cases were found in athletics and weightlifting.

Russian weightlifters and track and field athletes have already been banned from Rio, barring extenuating circumstances, for doping violations. Many will now call for that ban to be extended to the entire Russian Olympic delegation, in the face of such widespread abuse.

The IOC must now decide on a course of action, although in the past it has handed the responsibility of banning athletes to the international federations. However given the scale of the allegations, and the size of the potential punishment, the IOC would be unlikely to delegate responsibility to the IFs in this case.

iSportconnect will have analysis of the report by Michael Pirrie, the former executive adviser to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, shortly.

Russian anti-doping director speaks out

The director of Russia’s Anti-doping laboratory says dozens of Russian athletes at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, including at least 15 medal winners, were part of a state-run doping program, meticulously planned for years to ensure dominance at the Games, according to the New York Times.

In a report by the NY Times, it’s reported the director, Grigory Rodchenkov, who handled testing for thousands of Olympians, said he developed a three-drug cocktail of banned substances that he mixed with liquor and provided to dozens of Russian athletes, helping to facilitate the doping ploy.

Formula E Partner With Facebook to Enhance Content and Engagement Levels

Formula E have announced a new collaboration with Facebook to create increased levels of exclusive content and opportunities to engage with drivers, teams and events taking place throughout the course of each race.

The season-opener will be the first-ever motor race to be streamed live via the social media giant and is the latest addition to Formula E’s digital portfolio. The collaboration is expected to give fans various tools to engage with the events.

Ali Russell, Director of Media and Strategic Partnerships at Formula E, said: “We are thrilled that Facebook has decided to work with Formula E in this landmark agreement. We believe that live streaming the Beijing ePrix to our fans in Spain is a milestone in establishing Formula E as a pioneering digital brand and is the latest in a series of key developments in terms of our social reach.

“Formula E is a pioneering motorsport championship that is striving to engage a new type of fan, and working closely with innovative and creative partners such as Facebook is essential in establishing the brand across the globe.”

Patrick Chapman of Facebook Sports Partnerships siad: “Formula E have taken a comprehensive approach to offering fans racing content through innovative ways.

“They’ve prioritised new programming formats that are optimised for the way people enjoy content on Facebook.”

Olly Howick, Account Manager at digital sports agency WePlay, believes the deal will allow Formula E to reach a far wider audience than they did in their first season.

Speaking exclusively to iSportconnect, he said: “Formula E’s partnership with Facebook will open opportunities to reach an audience far larger than during the championship’s first season in 2014/15. Looking at this year’s Superbowl as a potential example of what to expect from Formula E, NBC Sports’ partnership with Facebook saw an immersive second screen experience provided to fans thanks to Facebook supplying a wealth of content and conversations around the build up to the action.

“With the exclusive live content available from the Formula E drivers and teams being pushed as a priority by Facebook, to its 650 million-plus sports fans, the opportunity for fan engagement is nigh on endless.

However, Olly believes Formula E could be risking losing its younger audience if it doesn’t adopt a wider digital strategy.

“Formula E’s partnership with Facebook does leave one question, however. What of the wider digital strategy?” he added.

“Considering we know that while Facebook has the largest user base, the younger audiences in particular have been focusing their attention on platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat.

“Last season for example we saw Formula E execute a campaign on Twitter with ‘Power Boosts’ being made available for the drivers receiving the most mentions from the audience watching at home. If Formula E can follow up on this type of innovative activity across the wider digital landscape and connect the dots with their Facebook partnership, we may begin to see the sport penetrate into new markets and younger audiences.”
