IOC member predicts South African Olympic bid

International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Sir Craig Reedie has become the latest high-profile figure to predict that South Africa will make a bid for the 2020 Olympic Games.

Reedie believes the fact the country is hosting this summer’s FIFA World Cup, as well as the IOC’s decision to give the 2016 Games to South America (Rio de Janeiro) for the first time will encourage South Africa to make a bid.

Reedie said: “The two great sporting events in the world are the Olympic Games and the World Cup. I would not be surprised at all if a bid came from the South African Olympic Commitee for a future Games.

“They would obviously have to decide where of all its cities would be best or appropriate to bid. The quality of the bids is becoming very high and I think that the decision to move the Games to the south of the equator (with Rio 2016) would be a natural encouragement to South Africa. One of the great joys of being in the IOC is that we get a range of wonderful cities applying to host the Olympics.”

Council Report Approves Manchester City’s Stadium Expansion Plans

Manchester may soon have the two biggest Premier League stadiums after a council report approved Manchester City’s plan to increase the capacity of the Etihad Stadium from 47,620 to 62,170.

A council report recommended the plans should be approved by Manchester City Council.

The blueprint has already been submitted to the council’s planning commission, but now a report suggests that the proposed expansion should be approved.

According to the Manchester Evening News, City want add 6,250 seats behind either goal, with a further 2,000 seats added in other areas of the stadium.

This would take the capacity up from 47,620 to 62,170, allowing City to overtake Arsenal, Newcastle and Sunderland, only falling behind neighbours Manchester United and the 75,731 capacity Old Trafford.

The report recommends the plans be approved by the council’s planning commission, due to the amount of local jobs that would be created, as well as the continued regeneration of the East Manchester area.

“The continued social, economic and physical growth and regeneration of East Manchester, and the Etihad Campus, is a key objective of the Manchester Core Strategy,” the report reads.

“The expansion of the stadium will provide enhanced facilities which will help to create a stadium of national and international profile and improve the visitor experience.

“The proposal will create job opportunities, some of which will be available for local residents and business, during the construction and operation of the expanded stadium.”

The only apparent resistance to the plans comes from the Friends of Philips Park Cemetery group, who have concerns about the level of traffic and anti-social behaviour from football fans.

“The Friends Group find the expansion of the stadium of great concern to residents and the surrounding area,” adds the report.

“There are issues from the existing use of the stadium in respect of rubbish, congestion of fans and traffic.”

Turkey to Bid for 2022 Ryder Cup after Successful Turkish Airlines Open

Following the successful staging of European Tour’s Turkish Airlines Open, Turkey are contemplating launching a bid to host the Ryder Cup which will next be available in 2022.

As part of the Final Four Series the event attracted World number one Tiger Woods among the elite 78-man field for the £4.4million event having also competed in an unofficial match play event staged in the country last year.

An emerging golfing destination, Turkey is also in contention to take over from Dubai as the venue for the European Tour’s season-ending event in 2016 and Ahmet Agaoglu, the president of the Turkish Golf Federation, views that as the stepping stone to staging the Ryder Cup.

“We are candidates for the Race to Turkey in 2016 and what comes after that? The Ryder Cup,” he told several national newspapers. “We have the idea to host the Ryder Cup in 2022. We will bid for that. Either in Istanbul or Antalya.”

The European Tour is expected to invite formal bids soon after next year’s match at Gleneagles and when asked about Turkey’s chances, chief executive George O’Grady said: “Turkey would have as good a chance as anywhere.

“We have been staggered by the success of this tournament. This is a country where anything is possible.”

That would seem to include the possibility of building a brand new course if necessary, with the Antalya region which hosted last week’s event actually being in Asia rather than Europe.

“Turkey is in Europe,” Agaoglu added: “But if we need to, we can build a course on the European side of Istanbul.”

Valderrama in Spain was the first course outside the British Isles to host the Ryder Cup in 1997. The biennial contest will be staged in Paris in 2018.
