The Canadian Women’s Hockey League has announced today that the City of Markham will host the 2014 and 2015 Clarkson Cup after previously hosting the 2013 event.

Known as the Stanley Cup of women’s hockey, the Clarkson Cup will take place at the Markham Centennial Community Centre from March 18-22, 2014. Presented in partnership with lead sponsor Scotiabank, the tournament will feature the top four CWHL teams competing for a chance to hoist the six-year old trophy. As the 2013 reigning champions, the Boston Blades will look to defend their title this season.

“Last year’s Clarkson Cup tournament was a great success on so many levels,” said Brenda Andress, Commissioner of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League. “We smashed through attendance records, made a lasting connection with fans and proved that the state of women’s professional hockey is alive and well.

“As hosts, the City of Markham has demonstrated its shared commitment to growing our game and ensuring the Clarkson Cup continues to showcase the very best in women’s hockey,” added Andress.

According to the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association, more than 2,500 women and girls play minor hockey in Markham and that number continues to grow each year.

Fernando Alonso Reveals Breakdown in Rescue Deal for Cycling Team

Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso rescue deal to help financially stricken cycling team Euskaltel-Euskadi is off it has been revealed.

Alonso, generic a massive cycling fan and close friend of former Tour de France winner Alberto Contador, had agreed in principal to take over the team featuring leading Spanish riders Samuel Sanchez and Igor Anton.

The team lost more than £3m in local Government funding due to spending cuts, a shortfall taken on by telecommunicatons giant Euskaltel, but they announced in August that kind of financial support could not be supported in the long-run.

The breakdown of the Alonso deal makes it more likely that the team will disappear after 19 years, only weeks after they won the team classification at the Vuelta.

“The negotiations between Euskaltel and the representatives of Fernando Alonso for the acquisition of the cycling team Euskaltel Euskadi on behalf of the Asturian driver, which began with an agreement in principle on August 31, have ended without an agreement,” the team said in a statement.

“For Euskaltel it is sad news that after the hope generated by the agreement in principle, a definitive agreement has not been formalised to guarantee a professional future for the members of the team and to reward the fans that have been loyal until the last moment.

“We would like to explain the details of the negotiations, because we have done our part, with total honesty, but it is not possible because we need to respect the confidentiality of the negotiations.

“Having not achieved an agreement, Euskaltel is unfortunately obligated to restart an organised and responsible closure of the project.”

Italian Tennis Player Found Guilty of Match-Fixing

Italian teenage tennis player Claudia Coppola, ranked 869 in the world, was on Wednesday banned for six months and fined $US4,000 on match-fixing charges.

The 18-year-old admitted the offences which were brought following an investigation by the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU).

“The fine will be reduced to $3,000 if the player completes a Tennis Integrity Unit anti-corruption training program,” said a TIU statement.

Coppola admitted to contravening two articles of the anti-corruption code relating to the outcome of a match or encouraging a player to under-perform.

“The suspension applies with immediate effect and means that the player is not eligible to participate in any tournament or competition organised or authorised by the governing bodies of professional tennis,” added the statement.

Coppola plays mostly on the second-tier ITF circuit and boasts just over $8,000 in career prize money.

Back in June Dutchman Yannick Ebbinghaus was suspended for six months for betting illegally on matches while just a few days earlier Russian Sergei Krotiouk was given a life ban for match-fixing.

Krotiouk was the third man in two years to receive a life ban for match-fixing following Serbia’s David Savic and Austria’s Daniel Koellerer.

Eurocup Revamped to Include 48 Teams

Europe’s second tier baskerball competition, Eurocup has announced they will undergo major changes next season including increasing the number of teams to 48.

Responding to the requests of European professional clubs, the competition will increase from 32 to 48 teams in the Regular Season phase. The size of the groups will grow from four to six teams, thus the number of guaranteed games for each club will increase from six to 10.

Another innovation this season will see clubs divided into two regional conferences for the Regular Season phase in order to reduce travel times and costs for participants. The top three teams in each group will advance to the second phase of the competition, the Last 32.

In another exciting change, Euroleague clubs that do not qualify for the Euroleague Top 16 will join the remaining 24 Eurocup teams for the Last 32 phase where eight groups of four teams will face each other, enabling them to continue playing European competition games in 2014, and increasing the standard of the Eurocup competition. The top two teams in each Last 32 group of six will advance to the Eighth-Finals, from that point onwards clubs will compete home and away until only two teams are left and the 2013-14 Eurocup winner is crowned, earning the right to play in the 2014-15 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season.

The  Eurocup competition expansion was approved in the ULEB and ECA General Assemblies held on 13-14 October 2011, but had not yet been implemented until the coming season.

Boxing Becomes First Sport to Receive 2012 London Legacy Payments

Boxing is already the first winner of the London 2012 legacy program with a boxing club in Manchester becoming the first sports organisation in the UK to secure funding from the London 2012 Legacy Fund.

Moss Side Boxing and Athletics Association is among 632 organisations to have submitted bids for a share of the £17m ($26,8m) Inspired Facilities fund.

It has been awarded £41,355 ($65,351) to upgrade its gym, where Beijing Olympic boxers John and Joe Murray trained.

Remaining applicants will discover by Christmas if bids are successful.

The Moss Side Amateur Boxing Club was formed in the wake of the Moss Side riots 30 years ago and is used by people of all ages and all backgrounds.

Sport England chairman Richard Lewis said the 2012 legacy programme was designed to pay for long term improvements to community sports facilities.

“This fund has really hit the mark with sports clubs,” he said.

“It shows we’re offering the sporting legacy that people want and that our work to simplify the application process has paid off.

“And what better example is there than this facility in Moss Side?” he added.

“You can just see that it’s so much an important part of the community.”

The Inspired Facilities fund is part of the Places People Play programme, which was set up to help deliver benefits to communities from the London 2012 Olympics.

A further 2,000 bids are expected to be submitted over the four remaining funding rounds.

Olympics Minister Hugh Robertson said: “I am delighted that the Moss Side Boxing & Athletics Association is the first to benefit from this funding and hope it goes from strength to strength in the future.

“We want to use the Olympics and Paralympics next summer to inspire a generation to get involved in sport across the country.

“This is why, as part of the £135m ($213.3m) Places People Play legacy programme, we invited community sports clubs to apply for funding to upgrade their facilities.”

England Match Called Off as One of Many Sports Affected by Mass Rioting

England’s friendly against the Netherlands at Wembley on Wednesday has been called off after authorities react to a third night of rioting in London.

The Football Association weighed the risks of staging the event and the possibility of another riot and deciided that safety must be the number one issue here.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman added: “Every football match in London is subject to assessment around police resources.”

The managing director of Club England, Adrian Bevington, stated that he was heading to Wembley Stadium early on Tuesday to discuss the matter.

“Deplorable scenes of disorder once more – heading into Wembley now for meetings,” he tweeted

Carling Cup matches at Charlton, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Bristol City have all been postponed.

West Ham cancelled their game against Aldershot early on with the rioting in East Ham and Ilford not far away.

Charlton’s stadium, The Valley, is close to Lewisham where rioting occurred on Monday.

Charlton wrote a statement on their website: “Clearly the most important factor is the people’s safety. The police have told us they believe the match should be postponed on safety grounds and obviously we have taken that advice.”

Crystal Palace also postponed their match Crawley town at Selhurst Park, given the stadium is close to the scene of disorder in Croydon.

With the unrest spreading to other cities across England, Bristol City’s match Swindon was also called off for safety reasons.

And Tottenham’s Premier League fixture against Everton on Saturday could also potentially be in doubt, although a statement on the club’s website on Monday said that everything was being done to ensure the match went ahead, with fans advised to check the website for  further updates.

The riots in Tottenham are a cause for concern for the club if they continue to escalate but at the moment the game on saturday is on.

Daniel Levy, Tottenham Hotspurs chairman, has pledged the north london club will help with any rebuilding effort.

He stated:

“As a major employer and business in the area, the club is deeply saddened by recent events, we are concerned about the disruption to local people’s lives and the effect on the community as a whole. The situation has also meant that vandals have unfortunately been able to use the events as an opportunity to loot and destroy property and business premises. This is the second time this has happened in our area in recent times (the last incident being the Broadwater Farm riots in 1985).”

He added: “The club is committed to supporting its community with help with both the physical clean up of our area and the longer term rebuilding of the community spirit. It is more critical than ever that community, business and political leaders – local and national, public and private – now work closely together to support the regeneration of this area and we shall certainly look to play our part in that.”

The third test between England and India will go ahead as planned in riot plagued Birmingham but the England and India team have been locked away in their hotels for safekeeping from any ensuing rioting. England batsman Kevin Pietersen tweeted to Piers Morgan that they were locked in their hotel.

The Indian Cricket Board have accounted for the players and will monitor the situation.

There was also concern that preparations for the 2012 London Games would be affected with the Olympic Park not far from Hackney, one of the areas affected. But the British Olympic Assocaiation said that the current situation in the capital should not affect preparations.

“It makes an Olympic Games and a Paralympic Games all the more important. We need a reason to come together,” BOA’s director of communications Darryl Seibel told Sky Sports News.

“What better city to do it in than London. It is the only city to be honoured with the Olympic Games on three occasions.”

Asked if he was aware of any damage caused to Olympic venues he said: “I’m not aware of it, no.”
