Hulsizer Closes on NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes Buy-Out

The proposed takeover of National Hockey League (NHL) side the Phoenix Coyotes has moved further considerably after a new lease was agreed for the NHL team at Jobing.com Arena by the Glendale City Council.

Matt Hulsizer is hoping to renew the fortunes of the side which went into bankruptcy and has taken a huge step in doing so following the recent decision. The council voted 5-2 in favour of a lease which will cost the city US$197m over a six-year period. Hulsizer’s buy-out is now expected pending an approval from the NHL’s board of governors.

Hulsizer will receive $100m for parking rights from the city and a further $97m as a fee for operating Jobing.com Arena, giving him the option to buy the Arena after five years. The latest decision was seen as Hulsizer’s biggest obstacle and now a buy-out could be completed within a matter of weeks.

“I’m happy the council went this way and the hard work starts now,” said Hulsizer. “We have a long process, but in the end I think we’re going to build a great product.”

Hulsizer said he doesn’t expect the Coyotes to make money “for a long time”, but he added: “I will tell you that 10 or 15 years from now, I think, along with the economy, things are going to come back.”

FA Imposes Global Betting Ban on English Players

The Football Association (FA) has announced that it will impose bans on English football players betting on matches anywhere in the world.
The new rules will come into force on August 1 and will apply to any player in the top eight tiers of the English soccer system.
This worldwide ban replaces the current restrictions for which players are banned from betting on competitions only in which their club is involved.
Tottenham winger Andros Townsend, Newscastle’s Dan Gosling and Stoke’s Cameron Jerome are among those who have breached current betting regulations.
Players will also be prohibited from passing on inside information to a third party who uses it for betting.

A statement on the FA website read: “Participants covered by the ban will be prohibited from betting, either directly or indirectly, on any football match or competition that takes place anywhere in the world.

“The changes to FA Rules from the start of the 2014/15 season will also effect a worldwide prohibition on betting on any other football-related matter.

“For example, the transfer of players, employment of managers or team selection. The passing of inside information to somebody that uses the information for betting remains prohibited.”

2014 Boston Marathon Adopts ‘no bags’ Policy in Wake of 2013 Bombings

Following last year’s bombing catastrophe, the 2014 Boston Marathon will have a ‘no bags’ policy.

The Boston Athletic Association, which has managed the annual event since its inception in 1897, announced the changes ahead of the April 21 running.

As part of the policy competing runners will not be allowed to bring bags of any kind, however they will be able to check in spare clothing and accessories at an allocated booth in a nearby park.

The items would be placed in clear plastic bags at Boston Common, and runners would not be able to access any checked bags until after the race.

In addition to the runners, spectators will also be prohibited from carrying any kind of bag near the start or finish line.

Bags are also banned in some areas along the track, which runs through a number of freeways and city streets in and around Boston.

The changes were announced 10 months after the running of the 2013 marathon, which saw two bombs planted and exploded on the footpath in the final 200 metres of the course.

The shocking incident saw three spectators lose their lives with more than 200 others injured.

For this year’s event, the association has also handed some runners automatic entry if they ran at least half of last year’s race without finishing because of the recovery efforts.

The 2014 Boston Marathon will be the 118th running and will host 36,000 competitors.

“Our announcement really is an excellent example of how much can be achieved when football’s governing bodies work in partnership with government to deliver a highly efficient investment programme into facilities across the country.”

The news comes just a week after FA chairman Greg Dyke formed a commission aimed at improving the infrastructure of the national game, a commission which has already been criticised by the likes of FA director Heather Rabbatts.
