Six Nations Pulls Record Average Audience of 4.4m

BBC Sport has revealed that this year’s international rugby union Six Nations Championship has delivered record audience viewing figures, with an average of 4.6m viewers watching live coverage during the tournament.

The figure beats the previous best of an average of 4.4m viewers for the 2009 tournament and is the best live match average since the Six Nations began in 2000.

The championship this year, which concluded on Saturday March 19, saw peaks of 9.6m for England v France, 8.2m for Wales v England, and 8.0m for England v Scotland – as well as an average audience share of 27 per cent.

Philip Bernie, head of BBC TV Sport said: “We’re delighted that record numbers of viewers have come to watch our live coverage of this wonderful championship, which is clearly enjoyed by such large numbers of BBC viewers across all four home nations”.

England were crowned Six Nations champions despite being denied a Grand Slam campaign after Ireland ran rampant against a sloppy English back line to win 24-8.

Despite a historic victory over France earlier in the competition, Italy again picked up the wooden spoon following defeat to Scotland in the bottom-of-the-league decider at the weekend.

The tournament will no doubt prove a good warm up event as all six teams work towards the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, later this year.

EY Extends Ulster Rugby Sponsorship

Professional services firm, click EY, today renewed their sponsorship of the Ulster Rugby team for a further three years after the success of their 18-month deal signed last year.

This announcement comes as EY looks to roll out their Ulster Rugby Career Development Programme, a unique mentoring initiative aimed at supporting Ulster Rugby players as they plan their future careers after retiring from the game.

Michael Hall, Managing Partner, EY Northern Ireland, commented: “We are looking forward to continuing our work alongside Ulster Rugby as official sponsors of the team, not only to support the players’ sporting careers but to also assist them in clarifying their professional aspirations after rugby.  By opening up our networks, providing relevant advice and facilitating immersive learning experiences, we are furthering our strategy to support and develop talent in business and sport throughout the island of Ireland.”

We are excited to be working with Michael and the EY team and look forward to exploring these opportunities over the coming years.”

Hall concluded: “Professional sport is a powerful metaphor for business. Facing fierce competition, building effective teams and developing both long and short term strategies are just some of the key areas where business and sport overlap and, through this mentoring initiative, we hope to capitalise on these similarities to make the transition to a career off the pitch as smooth as possible for the Ulster Rugby players.”

UEFA Strike New USD164m FA Deal as Platini Retains Presidency

A new £100m (US$164m) television deal has been agreed between the Football Association (FA) and European soccer’s governing body UEFA over the England national team’s qualifying matches for the 2016 European Championships and the 2018 World Cup.

The agreement means that UEFA can go ahead with plans to centralize the rights to all qualifying matches for the major international competitions and media reports indicate that the FA was the last major nation to agree to the plans.

A guaranteed minimum income of £20-£25m ($32.8-$41m) a year has been agreed between the two parties, to compensate for the FA losing its most valuable commodity.

The last four-year package the FA owned covered international and FA Cup games – including competitive and friendly internationals – was worth around $942.5m around the world.

UEFA’s aims behind the new rights plans are to mirror the highly successful model of the Champions League, whereby all rights are sold centrally and the income distributed among the competing clubs.

The body’s President Michel Platini will be re-elected today, March 22, as he is the only candidate to have announced his candidacy for the position and in turn will have at least four more years at the helm of UEFA.

IPL Award USD58m Global Media Package to Times Internet Ltd.

It was announced yesterday, March 20, that a major package of global media rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) comprising the internet, mobile and radio as well as television rights for certain territories has been acquired by Times Internet Limited.

According to the IPL governing council for the Twenty20 cricket competition, the company have splashed out US$58m to secure the rights through to the end of 2014.

Under the orders of the Supreme Court, the bids were opened in the presence of Justice Mukul Mudgal due to an ongoing dispute between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and World Sport Group (WSG), its estranged sports marketing partner.

An escrow account has been established to ensure that any rights fees paid by Times Internet Limited to the BCCI will be kept in the account until the dispute with WSG is resolved as the organisation filed a formal complaint after the BCCI, citing financial irregularities, ripped up a commercial agreement contract struck between the agency and now-suspended IPL commissioner Lalit Modi.

WSG had initially hoped that the Supreme Court would prevent the tender from being issued however, it still welcomed the order to freeze any payments to the BCCI, with chairman and CEO Seamus O’Brien stating: “In effect, the order protects our long-term rights and that of our partners, and also our revenues pending the final legal outcome of the case, and that is what we had sought to preserve.”

The statement to ESPNcricinfo continued to reiterate that the agency will take “whatever further actions are necessary around the world and particularly in key markets to protect its rights and interests, and that of its licensees who have invested in the success of the IPL, as a result of the illegal termination of its agreements by the BCCI, and their subsequent actions”.

ClearSky’s managing director Derek Kelly said he was delighted the firm will be working with the Robins for at least another 12 months.

“It is our aim now to help give a little back to everybody at ClearSky for all they have done this year and it is our hope that fans become more aware of the services they offer.

“We’re thrilled that we will be working alongside them once again in 2015 and we look forward to what will hopefully be a successful season on and off the field.”
