New York City Marathon to be Shown Nationally after ABC & ESPN Deal

For the first time in 20 years the New York City Marathon will be shown on national television after they signed a five-year deal with ABC and ESPN.

Marathon officials and WABC-TV/ESPN announced the deal Monday.

Beginning this year, the marathon will be shown live on ESPN2 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Eastern and in New York on ABC from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. ABC will also broadcast nationally a two-hour highlight show. The deal reunites the marathon with ABC, which carried live national broadcasts of the race from 1981-93.

The 26.2-mile race annually draws the world’s top professional runners in a field of more than 45,000 participants from all 50 states and more than 125 countries.

The New York City Marathon is scheduled for Nov. 4.

ITV Renew Deal to Broadcast Tour de France Until 2015

British television broadcaster ITV has announced today a new agreement with the Tour de France to air coverage of the race until 2015.

The new deal agreed with Tour organiser Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) will allow ITV to continue its package of live coverage and highlights programmes. ITV will also increase the amount of coverage offered digitally, including online.

The new deal comes on the back of a successful year of cycling coverage for ITV. The company reports that its coverage of the 2011 Tour netted an increase in audience of 33 per cent compared to 2010. It also broadcast coverage of the 2011 Vuelta a Espana for the first time, in addition to coverage of the Tour of Britain, Tour Series and Revolution track events.

Niall Sloane, controller of Sport at ITV, said: “ITV’s coverage of the Tour de France has a terrific reputation with viewers and sports fans and I’m delighted that, in one of the most exciting periods for British cycling, we have secured coverage on ITV4 until 2015.”

The 2012 Tour de France starts on Saturday June 30 in Liege, Belgium, and finishes in Paris on Sunday, July 22.

Buffalo Bills Secure New Broadcasting Deal with Entercom Communications

The Buffalo Bills have announced a new multi-year radio broadcasting partnership with Entercom Communications to broadcast all Bills football games on WGR (550 AM) in Buffalo beginning with the 2012 season.

The Buffalo Bills Radio Network will also be heard on Entercom’s WCMF (96.5 FM) and WROC (950 AM) in Rochester plus another 19 stations throughout the New York State region.

Entercom’s WBEN had previously been the flagship station of the Bills from 1979-1989 and again from 1994-1997.

WGR (550 AM) will air Buffalo Bills football games beginning with the Bills first preseason game in 2012.  The schedule of games will be announced at a later date.

In addition to the live game broadcasts, salve other Bills related programming will include a live Head Coach Show, purchase live General Manager Show, Bills player programming and a live Bills CEO Show where fans will have the chance to ask questions and interact with the Bills Chief Executive Officer.

Apple Contemplate Bidding for Premier League Rights

American multinational company, price Apple, pills are looking for further global domination by taking on Sky, the BBC and multimedia rival Google in the billion-pound fight for the rights to broadcast Premier League football in the UK.

With bidding for the 2013-2014 season and beyond set to take place before the end of the current, 2011-2012 soccer season, there have been suggestions that both Apple and Google will bid for future English Premier League rights to promote their respective set-top box offerings, according to the Daily Mail.

While Apple TV already presents its American users a host of subscribed sport, such as Major League Baseball and NBA Basketball, there is little to cater for the UK audience.

According to the perpetual whisper-mill, the California based giant is readying its own television sets for the latter half of 2012, such content would certainly be a clever way of getting Brits on board.

With stiff competition from ESPN and Al Jezeera, the Murdoch monopoly over Premier League broadcasting faces a uphill battle. Sky paid £1.6bn for the current broadcast rights and the figure may rise even higher this year.

Ten Sports Gets Pakistan Rights to Broadcast ICC Cricket

Ten Sports has acquired Pakistan rights to broadcast ICC cricket matches for the next three years as a sub-licensee of Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV).

Contenders in the bidding process included the Independent Media Group.

Taj Television, pills which runs Ten Sports had earlier on 22 December offered a bid of US $15 million for the rights. Independent Media Group had offered US $5 million.

Taj TV repeated the offer on 27 December which has finally been accepted by PTV.

TalkSport Gets Radio Commentary Rights to Euro 2012

TalkSport, the UTV-owned UK based sports talk radio station, has inked a seven figure deal to broadcast commentary from the Uefa Euro 2012 football championships in Poland and Ukraine.

As part of the deal TalkSport will broadcast all 31 Uefa Euro 2012 games live on its national AM licence, on digital radio and online at TalkSport.co.uk from the first game on Friday 8 June until the final on Sunday 1 July.

TalkSport has expanded the amount of tournaments it broadcasts commentary from in recent years with an additional game of the Barclay’s Premier League every week and exclusive radio rights to the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

England’s first game is on 11 June against France, while Ireland’s tournament starts on 10 June against Croatia.

TalkSport first broadcast live commentary from the Uefa Euro competition in 2004 but did not acquire rights to the tournament in 2008 after England failed to qualify.

A spokesman for TalkSport declined to comment on the cost of the rights but said the station will announce its commercial partners for the tournament in due course.

Moz Dee, programme director, TalkSport, said: “Major international sport tournaments are a huge draw for our listeners, as we’ve found with the Fifa World Cup in 2010 and the Rugby World Cup this year.

“With a team that includes Stan Collymore, Andy Gray and Richard Keys I believe we have some of the best sports broadcasters in the business and we’re the perfect place for listeners to follow all of the action next summer.”

BBC Radio Five also has the right to broadcast commentary from the Euro 2012.

Women’s Tennis Association Signs Deal with Perform

Sports content distributor Perform Group announced today a four year deal with the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).

Perform will manage and oversee the development of all media rights from the start of 2013 to the end of 2016, outside of the USA and Canada.

The agreement covers the 22 Premier WTA events, including the season-ending finale competition, the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships, currently held in Istanbul.

Perform will partner with IEC in Sports to sell, distribute and manage all broadcast relationships

Perform plans to double the number of current live matches produced, by increasing both the number of courts and days covered. In addition, Perform will provide extensive coverage of the WTA Tour on all its digital platforms, including TennisTV.com, the WTA’s and ATP World Tour’s official live streaming subscription website, ePlayer, the sports VOD broadcast platform that reaches over 90 million sports fans each month and Watch&Bet.

UEFA Award Champions League & Europa League Rights in Indonesia, Taiwan & Portugal

SCTV has won the rights to broadcast Champions League (CL) and Europa League (EL) football in Indonesia for the 2012-15 period, arthritis UEFA has announced.

SCTV will exploit the rights via its free-to-air channels SCTV and Indosiar, there and on its pay platform Nexmedia.

Indosiar will also broadcast a minimum of two delayed matches per matchweek. With regard to the UEFA Europa League, one live game per kick-off slot and a highlights programme will be broadcast each matchnight on ELTA TV Sports SD.

All matches broadcast on ELTA TV Sports SD will also be available in high-definition via ELTA TV Sports HD.

Sport TV will broadcast four live games per kick-off slot, as well as a highlights programme each matchweek across the Sport TV family of channels.

Superbowl to be Streamed Online for First Time

NFL’s showpiece, the Super Bowl will be streamed online for the first time in broadcast history.

The NFL and NBC announced that the network’s broadcasts of two wild card games, the Super Bowl and the Pro Bowl will stream on the NFL’s website, NBC Sports’ site and select mobile phones.

Viewers will be able tune in on their laptops, their tablets and even on their mobile phones — if they have Verizon — for Super Bowl XLVI, which takes place Feb. 5 in Indianapolis.

Hans Schroeder, the NFL’s Senior Vice President of Media Strategy and Development, said in a statement: “We are pleased to work with our partners NBC and Verizon to bring our fans more ways to watch their favorite sport during their favorite time of the year.”

While one has long been able to search for illegal streams of such games online, “NBC Postseason Extra” is the first time the league and a broadcast network are sanctioning online viewing for a game of this magnitude. NBC already streams “Sunday Night Football” online and on Verizon phones.

Last year’s Super Bowl, in which the Green Bay Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25, set a new record with 111 million viewers. It remains the most-watched TV broadcast in U.S. history.

While NBC holds the rights to this year’s game, the Super Bowl currently rotates between CBS, NBC and Fox.
