Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president and FIFA presidential challenger to current incumbent Sepp Blatter, Mohamed Bin Hammam says he is disappointed the English FA has decided to abstain in next week’s FIFA presidential election.

The Qatari called for FA chiefs to “reconsider their position and make moves to engage fully with the global football family”.

In his latest blog Bin Hammam wrote: “The football family is vast and diverse – perhaps more so than any of us can truly comprehend – and that is one of our sport’s greatest strengths.

“So it is always disappointing when someone opts not to engage with the rest, when one of our national associations takes the decision not to try to affect change from the inside. 

“It was with some surprise that I learned that the Football Association has taken the decision not to back either candidate in the upcoming election. Of course, that is the FA’s prerogative and it is a position I respect, even if I don’t agree with it.”

Last week, the FA board agreed to abstain in the June 1 vote for the FIFA presidency, citing a “range of issues both recent and current which make it difficult to support either candidate”.

The decision followed on from England’s 2018 World Cup bid failure and former FA chief and England 2018 bid chairman David Triesman’s bribery claims against four FIFA Ex-Co members at a parliamentary football inquiry two weeks ago.

A Sunday Times submission to the inquiry also alleged that Qatar 2022 rigged the voting process by paying FIFA Ex-Co members Issa Hayatou and Jacques Anouma $1.5 million in bribes. 

Bin Hammam claimed to be baffled by the FA’s decision to abstain, saying that as the oldest football association it was “one of the most important institutions in world football”.

He added: “As a result, they should be working with FIFA and the rest of the global game to improve and enhance football. By choosing to abstain, the FA is, sadly, forfeiting that right.

“I realise they have their reasons for making their decision but I hope in the days leading up to the election that they will reconsider their position and make moves to engage fully with the global football family, both on June 1 and beyond.”

With eight days until the FIFA presidential election, Bin Hammam said that in his campaigning he had heard “from my friends and colleagues around the world how they would like to see FIFA grow”.

“There is a strong sense that a new approach is required to tackle the issues that will surely arise in coming times,” he wrote.

“There is a growing appreciation, too, that FIFA needs to be more inclusive; we have to set our sights on working not only with the various associations and confederations but with all those who have the love of our great game at heart.”

MP & Silva, mind an owner of media rights for English Premier League soccer and French Open tennis, clinic said online video programmer Rightster Ltd. will distribute its content on YouTube, news sites and tablets.

The deal will include the creation of MP & Silva YouTube channels, integrated betting rights services for bookmakers, as well as online video and streaming to news sites and Web-enabled televisions, MP & Silva Chief Executive Officer Andrea Radrizzani said in an interview.

Video sites such Google Inc. (GOOG)’s YouTube, Hulu LLC and Netflix Inc. (NFLX) are rapidly expanding as people increasingly watch TV, videos and films online. More than 1.2 billion people viewed video content online in May, with YouTube being the most watched, followed by Vevo LLC, according to ComScore Video Metrix.

“Digital is a huge outlet and I expect most of our content will be eventually watched online,” Radrizzani said. Through Rightster, MP & Silva’s footage will be customized and localized to various segments and populations, he said.

The company, based in London and Singapore, provides some 10,000 hours of programming a year to more than 500 broadcasters, for events such as FA Cup, German Bundesliga and Major League Soccer. Rightster clients include The Guardian, Elle and ITN Productions.

MP & Silva is targeting about 60 million pounds ($94 million) a year from platforms such as YouTube, betting services and streamed live events, Radrizzani said.

“Some events wouldn’t be available on TV, for example, but you could find them on digital,” he said. “We aren’t seeking to replace the TV but to integrate and compliment the television.”

The most watched TV entertainment sites are the HuffPost TV Group, followed by CBS Entertainment and Groupe TF1, according to ComScore figures.

Under its deal with MP & Silva, Rightster will also develop an application for bookmakers for mobile phones and tablets.

After refusing to resign from their posts, Scottish Premier League soccer club Rangers’ chairman Alastair Johnston and director Paul Murray have been sacked, with the former urging Rangers fans to “remain vigilant and continue to exert pressure” on new owner Craig Whyte.

Along with the high profile departures, chief executive Martin Bain and finance director Donald McIntyre have been suspended pending an internal inquiry.

Johnston said of Whyte’s plans for Rangers: “He needs to walk the walk and not just talk the talk.”

Johnston had indicated previously that he would step down at the end of the season which was later delayed with the agreement of Whyte, pending the disclosure of more details about the buyout to shareholders, information that is due on or before June 6.

New appointments to the Ibrox board are likely to be made within the next two or three weeks though, it is understood John McClelland and John Greig will not be asked to resign their positions.

Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland, Johnston added: “I’m not going to make any comment with respect to the current circumstances at the current time, except that I will say – as a lifelong Rangers fan and a real one – that the 26,000 other shareholders in Rangers, as well as the hundreds of thousands of other supporters need to remain vigilant and continue to exert pressure on Mr Whyte to support the club financially as he has publicly committed to do.

“As far as I’m concerned, the next time we see a photograph of him holding up the SPL trophy, let us all hope – especially me – that he has earned the right to do it.”

Three Hong Kong television stations have reached a consensus over broadcasting arrangements for the London Olympic Games.

This follows talks between broadcast rights holder iCable, clinic the two free-to-air broadcasters TVB and ATV, denture and government officials. 

The agreement was announced by the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, ambulance Greg So. Mr So hailed the outcome, adding that Hong Kong people will now be able to watch the Games on TVB and ATV. 

The International Olympic Committee requires iCable to provide at least 200 hours of free Games broadcasts.

The official ball supplier to the English Football League (EFL), Mitre, has extended its partnership until 2015, with the deal also making the world’s oldest soccer brand the longest serving of the EFL’s commercial partners.  

Mitre has the position as official ball supplier for over a quarter of a century and will now continue to provide match balls to the npower Championship, npower League 1 and npower League 2 as well as the Carling Cup and the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy for a further four years.


This season’s official matchball of The Football League, the Mitre Tensile, will continue to be used for the 2011/12 season. 

Kieron Kilbride, director of Business Development at The Football League, said: “Our relationship with Mitre is one of the longest running in UK Sport and this extension during difficult economic times represents increased value for The League.”

Gary Hibbert, managing director of Mitre, added: “The Football League is one of the most exciting competitions in the world and we’re thrilled to extend the deal to be the official ball supplier. 

“We’re looking forward to a long and successful partnership with The Football League and another four years of unrivalled excitement, drama and goals being scored with our Mitre balls.”

The BBC have retained exclusive rights to the Summer and Winter Olympic Games until 2020 in the UK.

This means that the BBC will broadcast the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia; the 2016 Olympiad in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil; the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang; and the 2020 Olympiad, which has yet to be awarded to a host city.

Despite a recent cut to its sports rights budget, the corporation has ensured that it kept the Olympics in its sporting roster due to the importance of safeguarding free-to-air coverage for British viewers. 

The BBC will be able to broadcast exclusive coverage of the Winter and Summer Games on Free-To-Air televisions in UK homes, as well as offer coverage on other media platforms, such as BBC Online and mobile.

IOC president Jacques Rogge said that the BBC is a “world-renowned media organisation” with a long history of covering the Olympics. 

“As the host of the London 2012 Olympic Games and the birthplace of many Olympic sports, the UK is a very important nation for the Olympic Movement,” he said. 

“The BBC is a world-renowned media organisation with which we are proud to have worked for many decades, including for the upcoming Olympic Games. 

“We are delighted that the BBC will continue as our partner beyond London 2012, providing fantastic free coverage of the Olympic Games to the widest possible audience in the UK across a variety of media platforms.”

IOC Vice President Thomas Bach, who led the negotiations, added: “The BBC consistently does an excellent job of broadcasting the Olympic Games, so this long-term agreement is very good news for sports fans in the UK. 

“From a commercial perspective, we adapted our traditional broadcast rights approach in Europe for the 2014-2016 cycle and beyond, and have negotiated several key European territories directly. 

“This announcement is significant as it completes the IOC’s direct negotiations for the 2014-2016 period in Europe.”

Mark Thompson, whose last major role as director general of the BBC will be to oversee the London 2012 coverage before he steps down in the autumn, said that that was “delighted” the Games will remain on the BBC “into the 2020s”.

“It’s terrific news in the days before BBC Sport begins to cover the London 2012 Games and a tribute to the enduring partnership between the BBC and the Olympic Movement,” he said.

During London 2012, the BBC has agreed to ensure viewers can catch every minute of every Olympic event live on 24 HD streams to be available on digital TV platforms and online. The corporation will deliver 2,500 hours of live sports coverage across various platforms over the Games period. 

FIFA have announced that Tokyo will retain hosting rights of December’s Club World Cup in the wake of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami after president Sepp Blatter met with Japan’s prime minister, Naoto Kan, the country’s minister for sports, education, culture, science and technology, Yoshiaki Takaki, and the president of the Japanese Football Association Junji Ogura on Monday, May 23.

Blatter said in a statement: “I am very pleased that we can come back and organise the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup in Japan.

“More than that, I am pleased that we will contribute to rebuilding the J.League medical centre and football academy in the disaster area and that, together with our partners adidas, we will provide thousands of equipment items for Japanese children.”

Three FIFA Goal projects worth US$500,000 a piece will help fund the necessary construction and the news comes as a further boost to the nation, a day after October’s gymnastics world championships were reaffirmed for the capital.

The Club World Cup is FIFA’s seven-team showcase pitting the host country’s top club against the champions from all six continents. C.F. Monterrey and Auckland City F.C. will head to Tokyo for the December 8-18 finals with representatives from UEFA, CONMEBOL, AFC and CAF still to be crowned.

Prime Minister Kan added: “We are grateful for FIFA’s decision to bring the Club World Cup to Japan, especially because of what it means to the children, and we will make sure that all preparations are in place.”

European football body UEFA has inked a deal with the European Broadcast Union (EBU) for programming for its Eurovision network.

Under the contract, sample ed all audiovisual UEFA programmes will be distributed around the world exclusively on the Eurovision satellite and fibre network. This includes all Champions League and Europa League matches for the 2012 to 2015 seasons, and the national team matches of the European Qualifiers for Euro 2016 and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
