Chelsea and IMG-Reliance Discuss Possible India Deal

IMG-Reliance and Chelsea FC have reportedly launched preliminary talks about the possibility of partnering  to develop a world-class football academy in India.

Reliance CEO ,Mukesh Ambani, reportedly, met Chelsea FC Chief Executive, Ron Gourlay, in London recently for the first round of discussions.

For Chelsea, partnering with an established player – IMG-Reliance is the commercial partner of football’s governing body All India Football Federation (AIFF) – could provide a way into the fast-growing Indian football market.

An alliance with Chelsea will boost the struggling football activities of IMG-Reliance and provide expertise.

IMG-Reliance signed a 15-year deal with AIFF in 2010 that it has yet to profit from financially.

A deal between IMG Reliance and Chelsea, would be a great step forward for Indian football, said Prashant Singh, general manager, Octagon India, a sports consultancy.

“A football academy is the easiest path to a new market and Chelsea could not have landed a better partner than Reliance because of the Indian company’s ability to absorb initial losses, according to him. For IMG-Reliance, the deal could signify that things are finally falling into place,” he said.

In an interview in September, Gourlay said the club is looking for long-term grassroots programmes in India to engage with its growing fan base.{jcomments on}

CBS Executive Joins Big East Conference as Commissioner

The Big East confeence has hired CBS executive vice president Mike Aresco to be commissioner of a conference.

Aresco has been a vice president in charge of programming for CBS since 1996. He’s handled the network’s contract negotiations with the NCAA for the rights to the men’s basketball tournament. He also negotiated CBS’s 15-year deal with the Southeastern Conference.

Aresco, a Connecticut native who resides in Southport, Conn., has never worked for a conference or university, but his experience lies in the field where the Big East needs the most help.

“I’m not daunted by it all. I embrace the challenge,” Aresco told the AP in a telephone interview. “I would not be on the sidelines. I believe the reconstituted conference really has vast potential.”

The conference is in transition and will begin crucial negotiations on a new television contract in September. The defections of longtime members West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Syracuse cost former Commissioner John Marinatto his job earlier this year.

“It would be hard to overstate it,” Aresco said of the importance of the next TV contract. “I consider it job one. All eyes are going to be on it. I’m not making any predictions, but I’m very confident our value is going to be recognized and maximized.”

Six new members are scheduled to join the Big East next year, including Boise State and San Diego State for football only, to create a coast-to-coast, 12-team football conference.

Also set to join the Big East in 2013 are Memphis, Central Florida, Houston and SMU.

Navy has committed to join the conference in 2015, and the Big East will eventually be in the market for another school to give it 14 football members when the Midshipmen join.

On Monday, the Big East hired the sports media firm Bevilacqua Helfant Ventures, led by Chris Bevilacqua, who helped negotiate the Pac-12’s deal.

The league followed that up by hiring Aresco, who has made a long successful career of negotiating some of the biggest television deals in college sports.

Chelsea Announce First-Ever Profit Under Abramovich Ownership

Chelsea FC plc today announced a profit of £1.4 million for the first time in Roman Abramovich tenure as owner of the Premier League club.

The figures, for the year ending 30th June 2012, showed a record group turnover of £255.7 million, making Chelsea the fifth largest club in Europe in terms of revenue.

This follows the club winning the UEFA Champions League for the first time and the FA Cup for the fourth time in six years – in what was an historic 12 months both on and off the pitch.

The £1.4m profit contrasts with a loss of £67.7m in the previous financial year and puts the club in a strong position to comply with UEFA Financial Fair Play criteria for the coming seasons. In order to compete in European competitions, these require clubs over a fixed period to achieve a break-even figure when expenditure is measured against the income from football-related activities.

The increase in revenues to £255.7m from the previous year’s level of £222.3m was in the main due to on-field success, especially in the Champions League. In addition, significant profits (£28.8m) were made in the transfer market. The club also enjoyed an uplift in revenues from commercial activities including new partners and merchandising.

The club also negotiated a deal with BSkyB to acquire its interest in Chelsea Digital Media Ltd (the holder of certain Chelsea media rights). This deal allows the club to have full control of our digital media strategy.

Intergroup debt of £166.6m was capitalised into equity during the course of the year strengthening the balance sheet and making Chelsea FC plc debt free.

The revenue recorded in the latest results follows improved figures the previous two years.

The main figures for the year ended 30 June 2012 were:

· Group turnover was up from £222.3m to £255.7m

· Profit for the financial year was £1.4m compared to a loss of £67.7m.

Chief Executive Ron Gourlay said: “Our club philosophy is built on success. We had that success on the field this year, as we were the first London team to win the UEFA Champions League, and we enjoyed it off the field as well and this helps us inject financial investment into the team.

“The big challenge is always to have a successful team on the field that wins trophies and to make a profit at the same time. The objectives have been set across the whole business, from the Academy to Under-21s and all the way through to the first team.”

Chairman Bruce Buck added: “We will never forget that night in Munich and now we are celebrating serious progress off the field too.

‘While we draw huge satisfaction from the achievements of the past 12 months we are more than ever focused on continuing the story of on-field success supported by improving financial performance off the pitch.”

Venues Announced for 2013 Confederations Cup

Brazil and football’s world governing body FIFA on Thursday confirmed that the 2013 Confederations Cup will be held in six host cities, as initially planned.

“The host cities for the Confederations Cup will be Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Fortaleza, Recife, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador,” the president of the local organizing committee for the World Cup, Jose Maria Marin, told reporters.

“For the first time, this competition will be organized in six cities of the same country,” he added.

Last month, FIFA said four stadiums would be enough for Brazil to stage the event in view of delays in readying the six arenas initially planned.

There was particular concern about the stadiums in the northeastern cities of Recife and Salvador, where preparations have been running behind schedule.

FIFA has said that it requires that stadiums be ready at least one month ahead of time to conduct tests on security, telecommunications and other areas before the competition gets under way.

The Confederations Cup, to be held June 15-30, 2013, will be contested by Spain, who won the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, host Brazil, as well as Mexico, winner of the golden cup of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), and Uruguay, winner of the America Cup.

Other participants include Italy, the beaten Euro 2012 finalists, Tahiti representing Oceania, and the winner of the 2013 African nations cup, which takes place in January next year.

The draw for the tournament will take place in Sao Paulo on December 1.
