“Separating the Chef de Mission and CEO functions worked extremely well in London and we were keen to replicate the model for Sochi. While a much smaller team than in London we are committed to providing the same world class support.

“We had to deliver the best spectator experience and with mobile technology and social media moving forward at an incredible rate and with people expecting high speed internet, we had to build the world’s largest high density, high speed internet network in the Olympic Park.”

“Another key consideration was security. Michel Nandan Appointed Team Principal of Hyundai’s 2014 WRC Return

Hyundai planned return to the World Rally Championship in 2014 has gained momentum following the announcement of Michel Nandan as Team Principal and the formation of a new motorsport base in Europe.

Hyundai had a formal presence in the WRC between 2000 and 2003, with an Accent World Rally Car run by British preparation firm Motor Sport Developments.

In September last year however it announced its intention to re-enter the WRC and is now developing a WRC version of its new i20 model with the objective of competing in the entire 2014 championship.

Hyundai confirmed today that Michel Nandan would head up the programme as Team Principal. The Frenchman has held key technical positions in the WRC since the mid-1990s – most notably as Technical Director of Peugeot Sport between 1999 and 2005.

The firm has also established a bespoke motorsport subsidiary, Hyundai Motorsport GmbH, under which the company’s WRC programme will be run. The cars will be built in new headquarters in Alzenau, Germany, close to Frankfurt, where Hyundai’s European HQ is situated.

Nandan said: “I am honoured to have been chosen by Hyundai to spearhead its exciting new entry into the WRC. The project is still in its infancy, but things are moving rapidly, and I am looking forward to developing the team as this year progresses. There is much to be done, of that we are fully aware, but with a dedicated facility in Alzenau and an ambitious core of highly motivated personnel, we are already making good progress.”

“Hyundai is excited to re-enter WRC, and we’re back not just to compete, but to win,” said Tak Uk Im, Executive Vice President & COO of Hyundai Motor.

Adidas Condemn Suarez Bite but Dropping Striker Unlikely says Expert

Adidas have promised to remind Liverpool striker Luis Suarez of his responsibilities after biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic on Sunday.

The Uruguayan has been widely condemned for the bite and has been fined by his club, in the latest episode in a career that has seen the player make the headlines for the wrong reasons.

Now adidas, who have a multi-million pound association with Suarez, have taken the unusual step of stepping in as a sponsor.

In a statement the sportswear giant said: “Adidas takes this type of incident very seriously and does not condone Luis Suarez’s behaviour.

“We will be reminding him of the standards we expect from our players. Luis has admitted his actions were unacceptable and we support the way Liverpool are planning to handle the situation.”

There have been calls for Liverpool to sell the controversial striker, who was banned for eight games in 2011 for racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra, which led main shirt sponsor Standard Chartered to publicly express their concerns and hold ‘robust’ talks with the club.

However, Nigel Currie, director for brandRapport and sports sponsorship expert told iSportconnect it was unlikely that either Liverpool or adidas would be dropping Suarez. Currie said: “I think when it involves a player of the very highest quality such as Suarez, his team and his sponsors know that if they abandon him, someone else will step in, sign him up and benefit from his undoubted talent.

“In recent times in football and in other sports we’ve seen top sports stars fall dramatically from grace for a variety of reasons but in just a small number of cases has it resulted in contracts being terminated.

“It would seem the ‘crime’ has to be very much greater than biting someone for it to result in teams or sponsors looking to end the contract.”

ATP Executive Chairman and President, here Brad Drewett will step down from his roles due to illness.

Drewett, who took over as ATP Executive Chairman and President on 1 January 2012, has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease). He will continue in his current role on an interim basis as the ATP Board of Directors begins the search process for his successor in the near future.

“It has been a privilege to serve as Executive Chairman and President of the ATP, an organization that I’ve been a part of for more than 35 years since I became a professional tennis player,” said Drewett. “I hold the ATP very close to my heart, and it’s with sadness that I make the decision to enter this transition period due to my ill-health.”

We were very happy to support him when he worked through the ATP International Group and then the Tennis Masters Cup to help to open the great country of China to our sport which will always be noted as one of his outstanding achievements. For the ITF and for me personally, he is more than a colleague, he is a friend, and I want Brad to know we are available to do whatever is needed to help support him and his family. We send our thoughts and good wishes to Brad and his family and to everyone at the ATP during this difficult time,” he said.
