IOC Claim Wide Interest in 2020 Games with Tokyo Set to Bid

According to Gerhard Heiberg, an executive board member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), there are as many as 10 cities interested in hosting the 2020 Olympic Games.

The tender to bid for the Games was launched last week with National Olympic Committees given until September 1 to nominate an applicant city for the Games. However, although South Africa has surprisingly opted against a bid, and the Italian capital of Rome is the only city to be confirmed in the running to date, Heiberg has insisted there is plenty of interest.

Heiberg told Reuters: “We are not concerned at all about South Africa pulling out. We think there are so many interested parties. Up to 10 cities are interested for 2020, so one has pulled out, fine.”

The Japanese capital of Tokyo is expected to be nominated, while a bidder from the Middle East is also likely to emerge.

Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara wrote to every member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) following his re-election, fuelling speculation that the Japanese capital is gearing up to announce that it is going to bid for the event.

Heiberg added: “The process is going on and we are in contact with them (potential 2020 applicants). We hope it will be a combination of some of the big ones and some smaller ones.”

When asked whether the IOC had wanted a South African city to bid for the 2020 Olympics, Heiberg replied: “Yes absolutely. They showed they could do it very well in soccer and they would do it very well for the Olympics. Fine, they are not coming. They won’t come for 2020, they will come for 2024.”

Shahid Khan Extends Roots in London with Fulham FC Takeover

Mohamed Al Fayed is no longer the owner of Fulham FC after Shahid Khan, who owns NFL franchise Jacksonville Jaguars, completed a deal to buy the Premier League club.

The deal was approved by the Premier League on Friday evening ending Al Fayed’s 16-year reign.

A statement on Fulham’s official website read: “Mohamed Al Fayed has sold Fulham Football Club to Shahid Khan, the CEO of Flex-N-Gate Group and owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League in the United States.

“The transaction has been approved by the Barclays Premier League. Khan assumes 100 per cent ownership of the club, debt-free, as of today.”

The development stands to significantly boost Fulham’s spending power, with Khan thought to be twice as wealthy as 84-year-old Al Fayed.

The Pakistan-born 62-year-old, who moved to America as a teenager, is ranked 179th in the Forbes 400 list of richest Americans with an estimated worth of £1.65 billion.

He already has ties to London, with the Jaguars scheduled to play one NFL regular season game a season at Wembley for the next four years.

“(Mohamed Al Fayed) is giving me the privilege and responsibility of serving as the next custodian of Fulham Football Club,” Khan said.

“I am extremely honoured to accept and want to thank him, on behalf of everyone who loves Fulham, for 16 years of exceptional service to the club. Mr Al Fayed rescued the club in its hour of need and has led it to a sustained place within the Premier League.

“Fulham is the perfect club at the perfect time for me. My priority is to ensure the club and Craven Cottage each have a viable and sustainable Premier League future that fans of present and future generations can be proud of.”

Al Fayed, who converted previous loans into equity earlier this year, said: “My time of serving as the custodian of Fulham Football Club would one day come to an end, and I feel that time has now arrived.

“The time is right because I have found a very good man in Shahid Khan to accept the responsibility and privilege that I have enjoyed at Fulham since 1997. Fulham will be in very good hands.”

Al Fayed transformed Fulham from a third-tier side to an established Premier League club during his tenure. Fulham reached the Europa League final three years ago and last season finished 12th in the league.

Longest Serving AFL Chairman Richard Colless Set to Leave Sydney Swans

Australian Football League team, Sydney Swans have announced chairman Richard Colless, the AFL’s longest-serving club chairman, is to stand down when his current term ends in February next year.

Colless has been at the helm of the reigning premiers since May, 1993 and told fellow directors of his decision on Thursday morning.

“There is no particular reason for this decision other than the old adage that it is probably ‘about time’,” said Colless in a club statement.

“It has been one of the great privileges of my life to be associated with this extraordinary organisation.

“I want to place on record how indebted I am for the support of hundreds, but probably thousands of people, over the last 20 years.”

Prior to joining the Sydney board, Colless was the inaugural chairman of the West Coast Eagles and, during his time at the Swans, he also held the position of chairman of the AFL/NSW Commission.

In 2006, Colless’ efforts for Sydney, and the code in general, were recognised when he was awarded the Order of Australia for his services to Australian Football.

South Afrcia to Opt for 2022 CW Games Bid Instead of Olympics

After the shock announcement that South Africa decided not to bid for the 2020 Olympic Games just a week ago, treatment the nation has set its sights on staging the 2022 Commonwealth Games, viagra usa according to South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASOC) president Gideon Sam.

The government announced last week that it would not be backing an Olympic bid, insisting that it wanted to focus on delivering basic services such as water and electricity to all its citizens instead. The news came as a surprise as, even before the bid tender had been launched, South Africa was seen as one of the favourites following their hugely successful World Cup hosting last year.

Sam told reporters yesterday, June 2, that the country would aim to bring the Commonwealth Games to Africa for the first time, adding: “Immediately after the announcement of where the 2018 Commonwealth Games will be held, we will go in for 2022. It has never been to Africa and so we want to put in a bid.

“In the past we stood back for Nigeria but they lost out to Glasgow (for the right to host the 2014 Games). This time we have said there will be no horse-trading, we will put up our hand and see how we go.” The 2018 Commonwealth Games host city will be announced in November in St Kitts & Nevis, with the Sri Lankan capital of Hambantota and Australia’s Gold Coast in the running.

“The scale of the Commonwealth Games is a lot smaller than the Olympics,” he added. “We will have to have buy-in from a host city and from government, because of security issues, but we are not talking about the expense of an Olympics.”
