South Africa Sports Minister Still Holds Hope for 2020 Olympic Bid

Despite failing to receive government backing for a potential bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games, South Africa’s sport minister said today, June 14, that he still wants the country to bid for the event, going against a cabinet decision last month to instead spend money on services for the poor.

Fikile Mbalula claimed that he still hopes to convince his colleagues in President Jacob Zuma’s cabinet to revisit plans for an Olympic bid, which the government vetoed after estimating it would cost around US$50m.

Mbalula stated: “The bidding process is quite open. If we’re able to persuade government otherwise and turn around things, then we’ll still be able to announce (a bid).”

Mbalula collapsed at the May 25 cabinet meeting where plans for a bid were scrapped and was later hospitalised with what the government described as “flu-like” symptoms.

He revealed at a briefing on preparations for a meeting of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) next month in the eastern port city of Durban: “From our own point of view, the struggle continues. It’s not all lost.”

Durban had been tipped as a likely bidder for the 2020 summer games after winning praise as a host city during the FIFA World Cup last year. The South African government said it would rather spend money creating jobs and improving services like water and electricity, and spokesman Jimmy Manyi said: “If any money is going to be spent, it’s going to be on basic service delivery.”

South Africa poured $5bn into the first World Cup in Africa and largely overcame fears about crime and poor transportation to host a widely applauded tournament.

However, the country struggles to provide basic services and faces a 25 per cent unemployment rate, issues that have sparked major protests in poor communities in recent years.

Candidates for 2020 must submit their bids to the IOC by September 1. The host city will be chosen in Buenos Aires in September 2013. Doha, Istanbul, Rome, Tokyo and South Korea’s Busan have all shown interest in hosting the event.

AOC Report Reveals Russia to Top 2012 Medal Charts

According to a report by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) revealing projections of medal successes at next year’s London Olympics, Australia are set to finish behind Britain, with Russia winning the most medals.

Based on results from World Championships, World Cups and other major international events staged in 2010, Russia is projected to win 97 medals at next year’s Games ahead of 94 for the United States and 93 for China, the AOC said.

However, the US are projected to top the gold medals chart with an estimated 38, pipping China on 37 and Russia on 30.

Britain is fourth, with a projected medal count of 48 medals, made up of 19 gold, 19 silver and 10 bronze, followed by Germany on 47, France on 45 and Japan on 43.

The findings from the AOC predict that Australia, which finished in sixth place at the 2008 Beijing Olympics with 46 medals, will get four fewer at the next edition, including 11 gold, three less than last time, which could drop them to as low as eighth.

AOC President John Coates stated: “A top five position is still very achievable. There are five countries jostling for fourth and fifth spots who are all very close together.”

An extra $23 million in Government funding to elite sports provided late last year may help lift performances between now and the start of the London Games in July 2012, Coates said: “It took a while coming but it’s kicking in now.”

Strong National Support for Annecy Dampened by Poor Local Results

Annecy 2018 Winter Games bid President Charles Beigbeder claimed that the underdog candidate can still win the right to host the Games at next months session in Durban following the results of a new opinion poll showing that more than 90% of the French public are in support of its bid.

Despite expressing his apparent delight at the results on a national scale, the fact that only 67% of local residents of Annecy are supporting the campaign is indicative of its struggle to lobby for backing.

The Annecy 2018 Bid Committee commissioned market research firm IFOP to carry out a final opinion poll, with fieldwork taking place between 19 and 31 May.

When respondents were asked the question: “Are you in favour of the city of Annecy in Haute Savoie hosting the 2018 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games?”, on a national scale 91% said yes, on a regional scale 88% supported the bid but locally, just 67% were in favour.

Despite these findings showing that support is now higher than at any other time in the campaign, 16 per cent higher than when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) conducted a similar poll during the Evaluation Commission earlier this year, the result is still significantly lower than the 92% recorded in Pyeongchang, the favourites.

Charles Beigbeder, Annecy 2018 President, stated: “The support of the French public is driving us on in this bid and we are grateful for their efforts every day of the campaign.  This latest poll reflects the high-levels of public support as does our large and active Facebook community which has over 135,000 members.

“It is clear there is a strong belief in our vision of authentic Games in the heart of the mountains, with the athletes and for the future.  This has been embodied by our 600 official athlete supporters including football World Cup winner, Zinedine Zidane, Olympic Champion Marie-Jose Perec and basketball star Tony Parker.

“These figures have given a huge boost to everyone working tirelessly on the bid.  In the next few weeks we will all be doing everything we can to convince the IOC that Annecy 2018 would be the best possible partners for the Olympic movement to benefit Winter sports not just in one city, country or continent but all over the world.

“We fully believe we can be victorious in Durban and are sure the French public will be urging us on every step of the way.

Everton and England U21 player Jack Rodwell said: “The Games capture the whole world’s attention and it’ll be amazing to have the finest sportsmen and women competing in Britain. I would be proud to be involved and represent Team GB as competing in an Olympics on home soil is without a doubt, a once in lifetime opportunity”.

An expert panel will then narrow down the entries to a shortlist of 10 and, from this top 10, one winner will be picked.

Chairman of the 2012 Games, Sebastian Coe, added: “The Olympic Football tournament will see some of the world’s best young players competing in this country and millions of people can be part of it when tickets go on sale from March 15.  However one lucky person will make a real mark on the tournament by naming the ball – what an opportunity to be part of Olympic history”.

Hiroshima Officially Drop 2020 Olympics Candidacy

Hiroshima formally ended its flirtation with hosting the 2020 Olympics on Monday when Mayor Kazumi Matsui told the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) the city could not afford to bid.
Matsui told JOC president Tsunekazu Takeda that Hiroshima had debts still outstanding from staging the 1994 Asian Games which it was struggling to pay off.
“The city is still continuing to repay loans from the Hiroshima Asian Games in 1994 and we are still face financial difficulties,” Matsui told reporters.
“In fact we were unable to find evidence of any proper bid timetable (under former Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba).”
Hiroshima initially proposed a joint “peace bid” with Nagasaki in a move by the only cities to have suffered an atomic attack to promote nuclear disarmament.
Nagasaki abandoned its 2020 Olympic ambitions last January, however, citing financial difficulties.
Matsui decided to formally pull the plug on Hiroshima’s already flagging bid after being elected in April.
“It’s a shame that (Hiroshima) has pulled out but it’s unavoidable,” said Takeda. “We accept the decision.”
Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara reiterated his hopes Japan’s capital can rebound from the disappointment of losing out in 2016 with a successful bid for 2020.
“It’s better not to extinguish the torch,” he said.
Tokyo were beaten by Rio de Janeiro in the race to stage the 2016 Olympics, but look favourites to become Japan’s bid city once again if the JOC throws its hat into the ring.
Japan’s plans for a 2020 bid had been thrown into chaos following the deadly earthquake and tsunami in March but the JOC told Reuters recently of efforts to table a bid.
Candidate cities must submit bids to the International Olympic Committee by Sept. 1. The host city will be selected in September 2013. London hosts the next Olympics.

It could now be set to launch a bid for the 2022 Summer Youth Olympics, if plans proposed by the Hobart Organising Group for Major Events (HOGME) are given the go-ahead.

London 2012 On Time and Budget Despite Cost Increase

The Quarterly Economic Report by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) was published yesterday, February 14, with the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) revealing costs for the London 2012 Olympic Games have increased by US$110m since the last quarter. However, they claim that despite this, the Games are still on course to be delivered on time and on budget.

Figures from the Government’s Annual Report on London 2012 show that the overall funding package for the Games remains at $14.870bn while the Anticipated Final Cost (AFC) of the ODA programme is $11.676bn.

This includes a like for like increase in the ODA’s spend of $19m, plus additional funding for park operations – which has been included in the AFC for the first time – of $91m, making the overall increase in the quarter $110m.

The UK’s Minister for Sport and the Olympics, Hugh Robertson stated: “The construction phase is progressing on time and to budget putting the London 2012 programme in the best possible shape.

“This is the year when tickets will go on sale, test events start, volunteers are recruited, the torch relay route is announced and venues start being prepared for competition. Now is the time for everybody to start planning their Games.”

In other news, the schedule of events for the London 2012 Olympic Games has been released with the first action represented by women’s soccer in Cardiff, Glasgow and Coventry on 25 July, two days before the official opening of the Games.

The middle weekend of the flagship international athletics meet promises much for British fans, with trio Jessica Ennis (heptathlon champion), Christine Ohuruogu (sprint hopeful) and Paula Radcliffe (marathon and long-distance running icon) set to be going for gold.

Perhaps the most anticipated event of any Olympic Games is the men’s 100m final, with Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt likely to be centre stage, taking place on Sunday, 5 August.

London 2012 chairman and double Olympic champion Sebastien Coe described the tickets as the “greatest tickets on earth for the greatest show on earth”, stating: “This is a really big moment, a huge moment. In my own experience as a competitor this is the point that it suddenly becomes very real.
