IMG to Market MLS & US National Team Media Rights

Major League Soccer (MLS) and U.S. Soccer have agreed a partnership with IMG who will market and distribute global media rights for the two soccer organisations for the next eight years.

The long-term agreement, from 2015-2022, includes MLS and U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Team matches played on American soil, as well as qualifying games for two World Cup cycles. It excludes media rights within the U.S. and Canada.

IMG will market the rights across all platforms including digital and gaming.

The deal was completed between IMG and Soccer United Marketing (SUM), which represents MLS and U.S. Soccer’s commercial rights.

“As Major League Soccer approaches its 20th season, the worldwide interest in the league is at an all-time high and growing dramatically,” said Gary Stevenson, President and Managing Director, MLS Business Ventures. “With two new expansion clubs in New York and Orlando, global stars like David Villa, Frank Lampard and Kaka set to join the league, and players representing almost 60 countries, 2015 will be an exciting year for MLS. IMG’s expertise and unique position in the global marketplace make them the right partner for us and together we’ll grow the league’s global footprint.”

“We have a large number of fans who live outside the United States, and with the team’s performance in the 2014 World Cup we’ve brought in additional new fans,” said U.S. Soccer CEO/Secretary General Dan Flynn. “It is important for us to provide them with access to our matches. We are excited to be working with IMG to ensure we are connecting with our fans across the world in the coming years.”

Ioris Francini, President of IMG Events and Media, said: “Football in the U.S. is very much on an upward curve following the U.S. Men’s National Team’s excellent showing in the World Cup in Brazil and the continued expansion and development of MLS.

“MLS is experiencing vast growth in attendance, investment, stadia infrastructure, TV audience anddomestic and international player transfers. This is unlike any other league today.

“Over 20 players were called up for their national teams in the World Cup and more and more top players from European clubs are making the move across the Atlantic. We see great potential for the growth of coverage and awareness of both MLS and the U.S. National Teams.”

In 2015, MLS will increase to 21 clubs with New York City FC and Orlando City SC joining MLS. Both teams have announced marquee signings with Chelsea’s record goal scorer Frank Lampard and Spain’s leading marksman David Villa joining NYCFC, and Brazilian Ballon’Dor winner Kaka signing for Orlando City. In 2017, Atlanta will take the number of clubs to 22.

MLS was founded in 1993 as part of the United States’ successful bid to host the 1994 FIFA World Cup. The first season took place in 1996 with 10 teams.

Coca-Cola to Launch Global Olympics TV Programme

Coca-Cola are going to launch an ad-funded TV programme during the Olympic Games targeted at young people that aims to capture the “social” side of the event.
The original series a first for the marketer  will air 10 episodes on weeknights from July 30 through Aug. 10 through a variety of broadcast partnerships. Celebrity and athlete interviews, live musical performances and the Beat Bus, a mobile pop-up studio, will be mainstays of the variety-style show, which can be sliced and diced for use by Coca-Colamarketers around the world.
“We’re filling out a need and desire. Sometimes you have games coming and going and you get a lot of info on the event, but you miss out on what it would have felt like had you been there,” said Claudia Navarro, the company’s global Olympic marketing director. “Instead of focusing on what’s happening on the pitch, the medalists. … We’ll capture the vibe of London, the social aspect of it for the fans.”
Ms. Navarro said the show will target teens in more than 30 countries. Already Coca-Cola has secured hosts that speak English, German and Spanish, while other countries will use subtitles.
In the U.K., the show will air at 11 p.m. on ITV2, which also airs shows like “Gossip Girl” and “The Real Housewives of New York City.” And in several countries MTV is a partner. Coca-Cola is still seeking a partner in the U.S., though Ms. Navarro, says she’s confident Beat TV will find a distributor.
Time slots and show length will vary by region, though the majority will feature a 30-minute format. “We’re giving the markets flexibility of having different lengths, so they can cut snippets or place it digitally,” Ms. Navarro said. “We want to tap into social media.”
The show will be ad-supported, meaning advertisers besides Coca-Cola can buy air time during the episodes. Rival Pepsi could even buy ads, in theory, though Ms. Navarro considers that unlikely. For the most part, episodes will air on stations that have official rights to the Olympics and therefore previous ad commitments from Coca-Cola, an official sponsor of the Olympic Games.
Ms. Navarro said Coca-Cola branding on “Beat TV” won’t be “overt,” though the company’s involvement should be apparent. “We’re relying on linkage back to the ‘Move to the Beat’ campaign,” she said. “We believe it will be clear it’s coming from us. But we want the editorial piece to be fairly clean, so that people really enjoy it.”
“Beat TV” is part of the broader “Move to the Beat” London 2012 Olympic campaign, which includes the anthem “Anywhere in the World,” produced by Mark Ronson and performed by Katy B. The campaign also includes the Create My Beat and My Beatmaker apps, as well as global TV spots and Olympic packaging.

OCA President Sheikh Ahmad to Stand for Re-election

The president of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah has confirmed that he will be standing for re-election later this year at the general assembly in Tokyo on July 14.

In a letter to OCA executive members and affiliated National Olympic Committees, Sheikh Ahmad stated: “I will be offering myself as a candidate for re-election as the OCA president in the forthcoming general assembly.”

Sheikh Ahmad has held the position as the president of the OCA since 1991 as well as membership of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 1992.

He was a supporter of Jordan’s Prince Ali eventual successful bid to oust South Korea’s Chung Mong-joon as the Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) FIFA vice-president. In an apparent snub to AFC president Mohamed bin Hammam, who is thought to have FIFA leadership ambitions, Sheikh Ahmad announced publicly that all 25 votes which had gone to Prince Ali would also be going to Sepp Blatter in the forthcoming FIFA presidential election.

His letter to OCA officials and directors said: “It has been a singular honour for me to be elected president of the OCA since 1991. It has been a journey which I have cherished very much, especially due to the fact that I have received the whole-hearted support and cooperation of friends and colleagues.

“With your guidance and advice I hope to continue to serve the Asian Olympic Movement to the best of my abilities and capabilities and make the OCA one of the most active and revered continental associations in the world.”

AS Monaco Decides Against Paying Taxes as French Government Withdraws Amendment

Russian millionaire and AS Monaco owner Dmitri Rybolovlev has revealed the Ligue 1 team will not be paying their €5 Million ($6.8M) tax due this year as the amendment that was voted two days ago was withdrawn by the government.

French minister for the Budget Bernard Cazeneuve stated that this (the amendment) “wasn’t the best way to include Monaco in the 75% tax scheme”, adding that “the Constitutional board would reject it, as it involves a firm that isn’t domiciled in French territory.”

Monaco’s privileges have already been the targets of criticism from the other Ligue 1 club’s presidents and chairmen, who denounced the disparity between their tax requirements and Dmitry Rybolovlev’s (pictured).

Due to the new legislation, aiming at taxing earnings of major companies, such as football clubs, up to 75% when exceeding a million, PSG will have to pay off €20 Million ($27.5M), Marseille and Lyon €5 Million ($6.8M) and Lille €4 Million ($5.5M).

François Hollande and Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, who have had to go twice to implement the tax, are still struggling with a very problematic puzzle. They suggested that the club moves the HQ into the French territory in order to have the principality club falling under the French Constitution. This possibility has been firmly rejected by the club’s officials and Prince Albert himself, turning everything into a matter of national sovereignty.

Unsolvable for now, the case provokes the fury of other French clubs, who do not see why one of the richest championship teams benefit from preferential treatment.

Dmitri Rybolovlev spent €164 Million ($225.9M) last summer, after winning the French second division (L2), in order to sign top players such as Colombian stars Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez or Portuguese playmaker Joao Moutinho. Monaco are currently second in the league, two points behind Paris Saint-Germain.
