Manchester United Drop in Football Money League, Real Madrid Stay Top

Manchester United have been hit both on and off the field after it was revealed they had dropped to fourth place for the first time in Deloitte’s Football Money League report.

The report, which measures the world’s highest earning clubs, showed United’s total revenue has increased from £323.7m to £346.5m in the last season, but they were still overtaken by Bayern Munich in the rich list.

That has been put down to the German club’s UEFA Champions League and domestic success, helping increase their revenues by 17 per cent to £352.5m.

The report tops off a bad week for United who were dumped out of the Capital One Cup last night by Sunderland and lost on the weekend to Chelsea signalling a probable end to their Premier League title hopes.

Real Madrid Remain Top

The rich list also saw Real Madrid top the money league for the ninth consecutive year, beating Manchester United’s previous eight-year run, with total revenue of £424.2m. Barcelona hold onto second spot.

The report also put five English clubs in the top 20. Sheikh Mansour’s Manchester City have risen to sixth position in the table, putting them above Premier League rivals Chelsea (7th) and Arsenal (8th) for the first time.

Tottenham Hotspur maintained their 14th position. Deloitte say other English clubs such as Everton, Newcastle United, and West Ham United could challenge for top 20 positions next season because of the new Premier League broadcast deal.

The combined revenue of the top 20 clubs, almost all of which grew during 2012/13, increased by 8 per cent to £4.4bn, much faster than the global economy.

Austin Houlihan, senior manager in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte said: “Whilst Manchester United drop one place in the money league, a number of the club’s recent commercial deals will boost revenue in 2013/14, so this fall to fourth place may only be temporary.

“These deals, combined with the impact of the improved three-year Premier League broadcast deals from 2013/14, mean they are likely to get close to the €500m (£408.7m) revenue mark in next year’s money league.

“Beyond 2013/14, consistent qualification for the Champions League is key in United challenging to regain top spot in the money league, a position it last held in 2003/04.”

Dan Jones, partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said: “Real Madrid remain firmly at the top of the money league, even though the club experienced a trophy-less end to the 2012/13 season.

“Despite tough economic conditions, particularly within Spain, the club’s ability to generate substantial commercial revenue both domestically and internationally is central to their success. This helped widen the gap to their nearest rivals in the money league, FC Barcelona, to €36m (£29.4m).”

PSG Surge

In addition, Paris Saint-Germain climb into the top five. The club’s revenue has almost quadrupled to £326m since 2010/11, and includes commercial revenue of £208.2m – the highest ever single revenue source from a football club.

Houlihan added: “PSG are the fastest climber in this year’s money league, claiming the highest ever position for a French club. They are the country’s sole representative in this year’s top 20.

“We expect to see them become a mainstay in the top five in years to come, backed by their ambitious Qatari owners and strong commercial support.

“The high-profile signing of David Beckham in the second half of the 2012/13 season only served to enhance the club’s worldwide profile.

“Importantly, commercial success off the pitch is translating into improved on-pitch performance for the club, including winning their first Championnat title in 19 years.”

Galatasaray and Fenerbahce’s appearance in the money league, following successful campaigns in European competition, make it the first time since 2005/06 that two clubs from outside the ‘big five’ European countries appear in the top 20.

The topic is being widely debated in China and is trending on has become a hot topic in China, trending on Weibo (the Chinese equivalent of twitter).

BOA Cash Problems Escalate – Moynihan to Lose Chair if CAS Case Fails

The British Olympic Association’s (BOA) cash problems are set to prevent them from staging one of the Olympic Movement’s most important and high-profile meetings in London next year.

The General Assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), a bi-annual event, attended by more than 200 National Olympic Committees and held in conjunction with a meeting of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) ruling Executive Board, was set to be held by the BOA just three months before the start of the Games in London.

However, the BOA are now set to inform the ANOC that they cannot afford the US$8m estimated that it would cost to host the event. With Athens and Beijing both having held the Assembly in 2004 and 2008 respectively, just a few months before they staged the Olympics and Paralympics, London was the obvious choice, but the 2012 event is now likely to be held in Mexico instead.

A spokesman for the BOA told insidethegames: “The final decision regarding the location for the 2012 ANOC Executive Board Meeting and General Assembly rests with the leadership of ANOC.

“We are fully committed and pleased to be doing our part to support them.”

But the BOA’s failure to be able to organise the General Assembly is another setback for the political ambitions of its chairman, Colin Moynihan, whose ambitions of becoming an IOC member have been hit by the row between the BOA and London 2012 over the surplus from next year’s Olympics, which has been referred to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

After he rejected an offer from IOC President Jacques Rogge earlier this month to personally intervene and help broker a solution, Moynihan’s reputation is thought to have been marred within the body and reports suggest that his future at the BOA rests on the result of the case taken to the CAS.

The BOA is entitled to 20% of any surplus from the 2012 Games, however, there is disagreement over whether that should mean just the Olympics or also include the Paralympics.

Senior BOA National Olympic Committee members will table a no-confidence vote in Moynihan if the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rules against it.

The BOA filed papers with CAS two weeks ago over its dispute with the London 2012 organising committee (LOCOG) and the hearing is likely to take place within the next four months.

The BOA is challenging an International Olympic Committee ruling that it should not be able to take its share of any profit from the 2012 Games until the Paralympics have also been taken into account.

The BOA’s National Olympic Committee (NOC) contains representatives from all of the Olympic sports and is responsible for electing the organisation’s chairman and has concerns that the BOA is spending money which it cannot afford, on a case which it is likely to lose.

The leader of one sport’s governing body told the BBC: “There is no way that CAS is going to go along with this.

“Moynihan’s position will be untenable if he loses. We have got to get the timing of the no-confidence motion right, but he can’t possibly survive if he sustains that amount of collateral damage.”

Another added: “Members of the NOC will have to ask themselves how the BOA got to this when we should all have been concentrating on winning gold medals.”

BNP Paribas Open to feature Hawkeye replay system

The BNP Paribas Open, doctor at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, allergist will become the first tennis tournament in the history of the game to feature Hawkeye replay technology and video displays on more than three courts when all match courts are outfitted for next year’s event, search announced Steve Simon, tournament director.

While most tournaments feature Hawkeye replay technology and video displays on one, two or three courts, none have made it available on eight match courts. The tournament will also be upgrading their video displays throughout the grounds—the Stadium Plaza video display will showcase feeds from three match courts, the Village Court and the Garden Club displays will feature feeds from two match courts, and information towers will be located at all three entrances and next to the practice courts, making it possible for fans to stay in touch with the action even when they are away from the courts.

“This is a great addition to the BNP Paribas Open, and one that I am sure all players on the ATP World Tour will be excited about,” said top-ranked American Andy Roddick. “Hawkeye is one of the best advancements in the game in recent years, so making it available on all courts will create consistency, and is something we hope more tournaments embrace in the future.”

“Hawkeye is an important officiating tool and greatly enhances the tennis experience for fans and players,” said Adam Helfant, ATP executive chairman and president. “We think it’s fantastic that the BNP Paribas Open has made this commitment to bring Hawkeye to all eight match courts and look forward to seeing it in March.”

Blatter Hints at Qatar 2022 Winter World Cup, FIFA Security Chief Wary of Match-Fixing in Brazil

Sepp Blatter has added further fuel to the ongoing argument surrounding the timing of the Qatar 2022 World Cup by suggesting they should find a solution in winter.

FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke sent the media into a frenzy last week after telling a French radio station the tournament would likely be held in November, December or January of 2022, rather than June and July, due to the intense heat in the country.

Football’s governing body immediately distanced itself from Valcke’s comments claiming “no decision on any dates had been taken” and that the Frenchman was “merely stating a personal view”.

FIFA president Blatter reiterated that any official decision would be left until the end of 2014 but told Sky Sports News: “In 2015 we will make a decision whether yes or no we play in summer or winter but the tendency is definitely it is too hot in summer so let’s find a solution to play in winter.”

Match-Fixing Threat at Brazil

FIFA security chief Ralf Mutschke has told German paper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that criminals will attempt to fix games at the 2014 World Cup.

Mutschke, a former Interpol director and senior manager at the German Federal Criminal Police Office, said efforts to fix matches at the tournament in Brazil had to be expected.

“We must clearly assume that organised crime will try and fix matches at the World Cup,” he said. “At this event, bets will be placed at a great rate and a large profit will be made.”

But Mutschke said every possible measure to prevent such fixing would be put in place, adding: “We will have security officers in all 12 World Cup stadiums.

“We will monitor all matches on the betting market, we will be in contact with all bookmakers, screen the social networks and the relevant boards for hints. We will analyse individual plays during games.”

UEFA Intensify Anti-Corruption Battle

European soccer’s governing body UEFA has stepped up its fight against corruption in the sport by approving the establishment of a network of integrity officers around Europe, while Ukraine’s preparations for Euro 2012 have again been called into question.

The news was announced on Monday, March 21, following the conclusion of UEFA’s latest Executive Committee meeting in Paris. Committee members approved the recommendations made by the working group on corruption/match-fixing which focus on establishing the network, which will involve all 53 national associations, and fostering collaboration with state authorities.

UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino told reporters: “In the countries where it has been possible to fight effectively against match-fixing, it has been possible only thanks to the support of the authorities. We cannot do this by ourselves as we are only a sports organisation. But what we can do is act very strongly. If you don’t eradicate the cancer before it starts to grow, then it can become a danger, and we will not permit it to become a danger.”

In other news, Infantino also confirmed that stadia in Kiev and Lviv are unlikely to be completed by a June deadline for the tournament Ukraine is co-hosting with Poland. Despite Ukraine’s problems, UEFA’s general secretary has stated the delays in Kiev and Lviv will not affect preparations for the tournament.

Infantino added: “They (the stadia) will be ready by October at the latest and there will be enough time to test them from the month of October. We knew that it wasn’t going to be easy. But in the end it will be a magnificent celebration of European football.”
