Bin Hammam to Announce FIFA Presidential Candidacy

An expected announcement is set to be made by Mohamed Bin Hammam to confirm his candidacy for the FIFA presidential elections at a press conference in Malaysia on Friday.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president has been vocal in his criticism of world soccer’s governing body, of which he is a member, of late and in particular the presidential reign of current incumbent Sepp Blatter. Bin Hammam announced via his Twitter account that he would confirm his position on the matter, after months of speculation, at the press conference at AFC House.

The Qatari national is believed to be the main challenger to Blatter although others, including journalist Grant Wahl, have also dropped heavy hints over their intention to run for the post.

Bin Hammam announced: “I will clarify my position regarding the FIFA presidency elections, which take place in June 2011. I will hold a press conference on Friday, 18 March, at 13:00 at AFC House.”

Bin Hammam has outlined his policy manifesto by previously saying: “I would call for more transparency in FIFA, to widen the decision-making base and bodies within FIFA. I’d engage stakeholders more and give them a real platform to express their wishes. We should respect the clubs and it is for the clubs also to respect the member associations.”

Princess Haya Confirms Departure as FEI President at End of Term

International Equestrian Federation (FEI) president HRH Princess Haya bint Al Hussein has revealed she will not stay on as president when her term ends in 2014.

Princess Haya, who was elected President in 2006, proposed to limit the President’s reign to two full four-year terms when she began her stint.

After calls to add a third term the former equestrian has revealed she will stand by her previous mantle.

Princess Haya said in a statement: “In my first meeting in Lausanne with the FEI Bureau after my election in 2006, I proposed limiting FEI Presidents to two four-year terms. I suggested that reform, which was later adopted as an FEI Statute, because it is essential to ensure fresh thinking and avoid a sense of entitlement within the leadership of an International Sport Federation.

“Whilst I very much appreciate and am honoured by efforts of the FEI Regional Group Chairpersons and the National Federations to amend the FEI Statutes to permit me, or any FEI President to seek a third term, my views on the benefits of a two-term limit have not changed since the day I was elected. I love being FEI President. I am passionate about the work and our sport. I love the people I work with at the National Federations and at headquarters.

“However, I cannot in good conscience put aside my beliefs and the commitment I made seven years ago now that the term limit I supported applies to me. I am deeply grateful to all the National Federations that favour changing the Statutes to allow me a third term. I am confident they will understand why I feel I must keep my word when my current term ends next year.”

Princess Haya would lose her International Olympic Committee membership on leaving the FEI.

Top USOC Officials Handed Roles in Key IOC Commissions

It was announced last Friday, March 11, that Larry Probst and Scott Blackmun of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) have been appointed to key Commissions the International Olympic Committee (IOC), suggesting further signs of a developing relationship between the two bodies.

Probst, the chairman of the USOC, has been given a role with the IOC’s International Relations Commission while Blackmun, the chief executive, has been included on the IOC Marketing Commission.

The relationship was believed to have been damaged by a series of rows over financial disputes, plans to launch a US Olympic television network and Chicago’s humiliating failure to be awarded the 2016 Olympics and Paralympics. Since then Probst and Blackmun have spearheaded the campaign to repair the fractured ties.

Blackmun stated: “We are grateful that the IOC has selected us to serve alongside so many important leaders of the Olympic Movement.”

Blackmun’s presence on the Marketing Commission is seen as being of particular significant in light of the long-running financial disputes between the USOC and IOC.

The row over the fact that the USOC continue to receive 20 per cent of the Olympics global sponsorship revenue and 13 per cent of US broadcasting rights has been an open sore in the Olympic Movement for several years and in 2009 contributed to Chicago being knocked out in the first round of voting for the 2016 Olympics and Paralympics, despite the presence of US President Barack Obama.

The Marketing Commission contains prominent IOC members seen as the leading contenders to replace Jacques Rogge as President when he steps down in 2013, including Germany’s Thomas Bach and Puerto Rico’s Richard Carrion.

Other members includes Britain’s Sir Craig Reedie, Patrick Hickey, the President of the European Olympic Committees, and Dick Pound, the former President of the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Belgian Entrepreneur Roland Duchâtelet Takes Over Charlton Athletic

English Championship club Charlton Athletic have announced today that Belgian entrepreneur Roland Duchâtelet, whose company, Staprix NV has taken over the club and acquired 100 per cent of the shares, subject only to some final legal formalities.

Staprix is an investment vehicle with several football-related interests. The terms of the deal have been kept confidential.

The club had been in negotiations with the Belgian millionaire after talks with American Josh Harris, who owns the Philadelphia 76ers NBA side and New Jersey Devils NHL team, collapsed last month.

Richard Murray, who will remain on the board and become non-executive Chairman, commented: “I look forward to using my long experience in English football to continue to represent the club that has been my passion for many years. Charlton can benefit from Roland’s experience in many different ways.”

Chairman Michael Slater, who will step down from the board after a short handover period, added: “In every important respect we leave the club in a far better state than when we took over three years ago, but now is the time to pass the baton to Roland who has a proven track record of success in business and football.

“We believe we have found an investor with extensive knowledge of football who is well placed to stabilize the club in the Championship and help the club to develop on a sensible commercial basis.”

Tony Jimenez and Martin Prothero are also stepping down from the board of directors.

Dramatic Progress at Turkmenistan’s Olympic Complex

TISMF is the initiative of President of Turkmenistan, unhealthy Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow to enable international media to see the progress of the Olympic Complex. The Chairman of the State Committee of Turkmenistan for Sport, Batyr Orazov, spoke about the project:

“This has been a much-anticipated project as everybody looks ahead to the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in 2017. But this development will serve for much longer than these Games – we hope to host many future international sporting events here. The building of Ashgabat’s Olympic Complex is just the beginning for hosting international sport in Turkmenistan.”

High-profile guests and the world’s leading sports journalists first visited the Complex’s luxury media hotel, before touring the Small Indoor Arena (which has 5,000 seats, whilst the Large Indoor Arena has a 15,000 capacity. “The Olympic Complex is a purpose built area with modern, state-of-the-art facilities which athletes will look forward to performing in, in 2017. Rapid developments in construction mean that the area will be completely ready well ahead of Ashgabat hosting the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.”

Ashgabat’s Olympic Complex is made up of 15 venues, including two indoor arenas, a velodrome, an indoor athletics facility, tennis centre and an aquatic centre. An athletes’ village is also being built, and is set to contain 12,000 beds once completed. Michael Cole, former London 2012 Marketing and Communications Director for BT Global Services, commented on the Complex:

Sportsnet Buys Grand Slam of Curling

Sportsnet have purchased the Grand Slam of Curling, an elite series of men’s and women’s curling events.

The series, which caters to elite teams, was on shaky ground last season. That problem became public when a financial dispute resulted in CBC ending a five-year agreement with Insight Sports Ltd. and refusing to televise the Players’ Championship at the end of the season.

“It’s exciting because they’re definitely going in the right direction,” said Ted Appelman, who will be back with his brother, Tom, this year after playing last season with former Canadian and world champ Randy Ferbey. “They’ve got a major corporation taking ownership of the Grand Slams and it’ll continue to grow for years to come.”

Reigning Canadian women’s curling champion Heather Nedohin said: “We were hoping,” when asked if she had expected the Grand Slam events to be held again this season.

“This is extremely late in the season, as in the season starts here in three weeks,” said Nedohin, whose championship rink includes third Beth Iskiw, second Jessica Mair and lead Laine Peters. “It’s very late in the year to know what’s a Slam or not and what’s going on. That’s challenging for a team trying to determine where you’re going to be placed and stuff.

“Hearing this announcement today is great news for all of us because now we can secure our schedules and proceed with those that are going to be high in points and high in calibre of play,”

In the past, teams qualified for Grand Slam events based on the number of points they accumulated in other bonspiels on the World Curling Tour.

The 2012-13 series will commence with The Masters at Brantford, Ont., from Nov. 14-18 and features 34 men’s and 34 women’s teams, “which is unusual for the Grand Slams, which has always been the top 18 teams,” said Ted Appelman. “It’s going to be a big event, I guess. The first one is a lot of teams.”
