American Investment Firm Increases Ownership of Manchester United Shares

Baron Capital has acquired a quarter of all Manchester United shares available on the New York Stock Exchange.

The American investment firm has been buying up stock and now owns 24 per cent of all the United shares that were sold by the Glazer family in 2012, though that still only represents 2.5 per cent of the club.

The Glazer family only released 10 per cent of the club on to the stock market – they still retain 90 per cent and control the vast majority of votes. It is not considered a move to gain a controlling stake in the team.

Nevertheless, Baron Capital’s actions explain why the share price has been slowly rising despite the club’s struggles on the pitch.

This has also been fuelled by expectation of an announcement of a new Nike kit deal worth hundreds of millions of pounds.

Baron Capital’s United shareholding was confirmed in a securities and exchange commission filing on the Manchester United investor relations website. It says Baron Capital now owns 9,581,636 shares, which were worth £90m at the close of the market on Monday.

“Shares of Manchester United dropped… due to a delay in the signing of a new global merchandise deal with Nike and the team’s poor performance on the field,” Baron Capital said on its website.

“The Nike deal is still expected to be signed, but has been pushed out from this fiscal year. We remain positive on the company’s prospects going forward.”

Istanbul 2020 Bid Boosted after Ranked in Top 10 for Tourist Destination

Istanbul’s bid for the 2020 Olympics have been boosted after an New York Times report ranked Istanbul as one of the world’s top 10 tourist destinations for 2013.

The news follows last week’s launch of the Istanbul 2020 bid concept based on three pillars:  technical excellence; an incomparable Games backdrop; and a profound legacy impact for Turkey and the Olympic Movement. Istanbul’s reputation as a “vibrant mega-city spanning two continents, more than three civilisations and eight millennia” was reinforced in the New York Times report, which describes some of Istanbul’s historic quarters as “going through a renaissance at warp speed”.

Istanbul 2020’s bid leader, Hasan Arat, commented on the news: “I am thrilled, but not surprised, that the New York Times has named Istanbul as a top 10 destination.

“The 2020 Games in Istanbul would be at the centre of a physical and symbolic bridge between East and West, cultures and continents. The city is a world-renowned cultural hub and has proven it is ready to welcome the world. Istanbul will be an exciting place for the Olympic family as the older areas of the city continue to be revitalised by the youthful population and buzzing contemporary arts scene.”

Istanbul has already been named as the fifth most desirable tourist destination in the world and the third most visited city in Europe in MasterCard’s biannually published Global Destination Index. The number of visitors to Turkey rose in the first eight months of 2012 to 22 million – an increase of over half a million visitors on the same period in 2012, and a 200% rise over the last decade.

Professor Uğur Erdener, International Olympic Committee (IOC) member and head of the NOC of Turkey, stated: “Istanbul would make an inspiring host city for the Games in 2020 because it is a truly unique city. It has a rich history and a sense of tradition which fuses harmoniously with a vibrant culture and modernity. That is what I think is so appealing for tourists. Its role as a melting pot of languages, religions and races is another reason for the city’s popularity, allowing visitors a chance to sample an enticing blend of cultures in one cosmopolitan city.”

Next year, 33 million visitors are expected to travel to Turkey as the country’s tourism industry continues to boom.

UK Sports Minister Claims England Could Break from FIFA

The UK government’s Sports Minister Hugh Robertson has suggested England could break away from world soccer’s governing body, FIFA, if it does not address allegations of corruption within the organisation.

Yesterday, May 10, Former Football Association chairman Lord Triesman claimed four FIFA members sought “bribes” in return for backing England’s failed 2018 World Cup bid.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Robertson stated: “There is a desire to try and work and change FIFA from the inside. If FIFA proves unable to do that, then I would say all options are possible.”.

During a parliamentary inquiry into England’s failure to host the 2018 World Cup on Tuesday, Triesman alleged FIFA vice-president Jack Warner, Paraguayan Nicolas Leoz, Brazilian Ricardo Teixeira and Thai Worawi Makudi sought “bribes” in return for backing England’s bid.

In response to the fresh corruption allegations, FIFA president Sepp Blatter has pledged to take immediate action if any evidence of wrongdoing is presented to the body.

Robertson has urged FIFA to adopt greater transparency in its bidding process and conduct similar internal reforms implemented by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) following the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics campaign scandal.

He added: “The first thing is the allegations are brought to the attentions of FIFA and make sure that happens in concert with the FA.

“We have to back that up with evidence and I would hope FIFA follow the example of the International Olympic Committee, who went through a similar process after Salt Lake City.

“There is nobody currently bidding for the 2018 Winter Olympics who doesn’t believe their system is fair and transparent – FIFA needs to be in the same position.”

Orient Propose Switch to Eton Manor to Drop OS Legal Action

According to the chairman of English League One soccer side Leyton Orient, Barry Hearn, the club would be prepared to drop their threatened legal action over West Ham United’s proposed move to the Olympic Stadium if they were allowed to move to Eton Manor after London 2012.

The London club, situated closest to the Olympic Park venue, fear West Ham’s move to Stratford could cost them up to US$2.4m a year and have written to the Premier League to complain about it, threatening legal action.

Hearn has since aired the prospect of a compromise which would see Orient leave Brisbane Road and share the Olympic Park with their Premier League neighbours.

In an interview with Waltham Forest Guardian, Hearn stated: “Ideally I’d like to carry on where we are and not have any football team move into the Olympic Stadium but of course this isn’t an ideal world.

“There’s a question of can we get round the table and is there a settlement for Leyton Orient which will guarantee its survival?

“A pile of money won’t solve anything.”

Hearn wants the authorities to help Orient build a new 15,000-seater stadium at nearby Eton Manor on the Olympic Park.

Eton Manor is currently being redeveloped and is due to host three temporary training swimming pools for aquatics during the Olympics and then wheelchair tennis during the Paralympics.

It had been intended that after the Games Eton Manor will be transformed into a unique mix of sporting facilities for local and regional communities, including a tennis centre with four indoor and six outdoor courts, a hockey centre with two competition pitches and five-a-side soccer pitches.

The facilities will be able to accommodate elite hockey events for up to 15,000 spectators.

“To compete we would have to move out of the area completely or be housed in the Olympic Park itself,” said Hearn.

“That way we could have the same facilities and transport links that West Ham would have and then there would be a level playing field for us to compete on.

“There are options such as moving into the hockey stadium or building a new venue at Eton Manor playing fields.

“These are real suggestions we are looking at to resolve this issue.”

Liverpool Agree Settlement with Former Owners Hicks & Gillett

Premier League stallwarts, ampoule Liverpool have reached an agreement with former owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett for an out-of-court settlement over the sale of the club in 2010.

The American pair, nurse who arrived at Anfield in 2007, were unhappy with the way their sale to Fenway Sports Group (then New England Sports Ventures) was concluded by Sir Martin Broughton, Christian Purslow and Ian Ayre, who were respectively Liverpool chairman, managing director and commercial director at the time.

Hicks and Gillett went on to vent their frustrations by making a number of claims and allegations against the trio, which were all denied, and ultimately led to legal proceedings.

Those allegations and claims were denied by Messrs Broughton, Purslow and Ayre. The allegations, claims and denials resulted in legal proceedings being commenced.

“The parties have now agreed a settlement (the terms of which are confidential). All claims and allegations made against Messrs Broughton, Purslow and Ayre have been withdrawn by Messrs Hicks and Gillett and all legal proceedings between the parties concluded. The parties will not be making any further statement to the press.’
