City Events 2014: The Can’t-miss Event for Hosting International Sporting Events

November 13th and 14th, hospital host cities, international federations, and events rights owners will meet in historic Paris to discuss and shape the future of international sporting events during the fifth edition of City Events, focusing on the theme “winning strategies for hosting sporting events.”

Over the past four years, City Events has established itself as the place for ambitious cities to gather all the information and make the key connections they need to successfully host international sporting events and place themselves on the map. It is also the ideal venue for international sports federations to identify the future host for their events. Over 10 sporting events have already come to fruition thanks to connections made at City Events!

Last year in Lausanne, 250 participants representing 24 countries shared their unique perspectives and experience on sporting events in the near future. Topics included innovative venue concepts, real-time marketing of events, the latest tools for measuring return on investment, and adapting events to an urban context.

This year, City Events will bring together Federations, cities, events organizers, owners, and suppliers around the central theme “Winning strategies for hosting sporting events.” The theme encompasses how cities can optimize their chances for winning sporting event bids, how events can be organized and executed with sustainability in mind, and how to create a legacy of positive social change for citizens after hosting an event.

The 2014 program is a balance between addressing issues currently concerning host cities and event stakeholders and looking forward to shape the future of sporting events. Its organization offers a similar balance between conferences and networking opportunities. The two-day program is composed of three plenary sessions, each followed by smaller breakout discussions in which participants can directly engage with plenary speakers. Additionally, a two-hour one-on-one speed meeting session is planned to allow city delegates to make quality connections with as many sport professionals as possible.

After three years in Lausanne, we are excited to unite the cities and the sporting community in Paris. The “City of Lights” exemplifies a harmonious hosting partnership with numerous sporting events that builds continually on past heritage to create a lasting legacy in the future.

We look forward to welcoming you in Paris this November!

Criticism Mounts for NBC & Channel 4 Paralympics TV Coverage

London Paralympics TV covergae in Britain and America has received a backflash after disability groups criticised US broadcaster NBC for failing to show any of the action live and Channel 4 fell foul of critics in the UK.

NBC, which was also attacked for its Olympic coverage, denied its viewers the chance to watch an opening ceremony for the second time this summer and will show only four hour-long highlight programmes on its TV network. A week after the Paralympics finish, it will air a 90-minute special on the event.

Although there are highlights packages on the NBC YouTube channel there is anger in some quarters and several online petitions have been started.

One has been launched by Damon Herota of Florida. He told the Daily Mail: “It’s a sign of disrespect, especially to those military veterans who are competing. Attitudes are supposed to have changed since the days of Vietnam, when veterans were ignored. What message does this send?”

The story has also been picked up in America, where Sports Illustrated noted: “This year’s Paralympics are expected to draw their largest ever live television audience – except in the United States, where events will receive only minimal coverage and won’t be screened as they happen.”

The US broadcaster’s approach is in “sharp contrast” to that of other nations, said The Daily Telegraph.

Philip Craven, President of the International Paralympic Committee, told the paper: “Some people think that North America always lead on everything, and on this they don’t. It’s about time they caught up.”

Channel 4 came under fire for running too many ad breaks during the opening ceremony. Although it recorded its best viewing figures for 11 years, the Daily Mail reported that the channel was “hit with a tide of criticism about its coverage of the Games”.

“Viewers are furious that the broadcaster kept cutting away from the action to go to commercial breaks during Wednesday night’s ceremony and as the sporting events kicked off yesterday,” it explained.

These deployments, when combined with Elemental’s support for transnational feeds of the Games, will make video streams from Elemental available in 70 countries and to more than a billion potential viewers.

“When we began the intense evaluation process for streaming of the Olympic Games more than a year ago, Elemental had little idea of just how broadly we’d be adopted on a global scale”

The BBC plans to stream 2,500 hours of the Olympic Games using Elemental Live and to provide its audience with up to 24 alternative live HD streams from which to choose. The BBC will also use Elemental Live to encode and archive events that can be easily transitioned into video on-demand (VOD) assets for streaming catch-up TV to viewers in the UK.

Eurosport will deliver live coverage of the London 2012 Olympic Games via PC in 50 countries through the Eurosport Player service. “Elemental’s solution provides a level of quality that is unmatched in the market without sacrificing the traditional tradeoff of density and cost,” noted Werner Michels, engineering director at Terra. “We chose to partner with Elemental because compared to the vendor we used for the Vancouver Olympics, with Elemental we were able to increase our coverage of the games and throughput by more than 50% in less than half the rack space while improving quality.”

“When we began the intense evaluation process for streaming of the Olympic Games more than a year ago, Elemental had little idea of just how broadly we’d be adopted on a global scale,” said Sam Blackman, CEO and Co-founder at Elemental Technologies. “To play such an integral role in the ‘first truly digital Olympics’ is a privilege that every Elemental employee accepts with great pride.”

The Global Sports Symposium is an annual student-run conference that is considered one of the global sports industry’s premier events. The Symposium enables the industry’s leaders and executives to share invaluable knowledge with their peers and potential successors.

We are excited to announce all our confirmed speakers for one of our panels for The Global Sports Symposium, The Future of Media in Sport. The speakers in this panel include:

Moderator:
David Sternberg (Manchester United FC, Head of Media)

Panel Speakers:
• Charly Classen (ESPN (EMEA),VP & GM)
• Dan Markham (NBA, SVP Media Distribution & Emerging Markets)
• Dave Gibbs (Sky Sports, Director Digital Media)
• Matthew Baxter (Liverpool FC, Chief Media Officer)
• Stephen Nuttall (Sports You Tube EMEA, Senior Director)

With such an interesting line up, there will be a thought provoking conversation happening at the Emirates Stadium, London on the 15th May. But why is The Future or Media in Sport so vital to discuss? Recently, we observed BT disrupt the sports media market by offering packages to rival Sky, bringing the world of sport to more fans, and ultimately making the market more competitive. In addition, we’re seeing sports clubs and leagues finding new revenue streams by affiliating themselves with media companies through organic growth or partnerships. Technological innovation on mobile and Internet is making sport easier for fans to consume, expanding fan bases across geographies. Are the rising rights fees sustainable, or will the bubble burst? In what ways will business and clubs be able to work together to increase profitability from their athletes, and how will rapidly evolving audiences consume sport in the future?

To find all the answers to these questions, you need to guarantee yourself a seat at The Global Sports Symposium. The Global Sports Symposium is presented by the team behind the Ivy Sports Symposium, which for the past eight years has rotated among Ivy League campuses in the United States. Last year’s event at Harvard University was a success, attracting over 650 attendees and 100 speakers. This will be the first year that the Symposium is held outside of the United States, taking place at Emirates Stadium in London on May 15th, 2014.

The Global Sports Symposium is a great way to meet with future leaders and top level executives, all in one place. The Symposium has been a huge success in the US, with teams seeing huge benefits from attending in terms of career development and gaining unrivalled industry insights. Make sure you don’t miss out on this great event.

We hope that you share our enthusiasm for the 2014 Global Sports Symposium. Make sure you follow us on Twitter to keep up to date with the symposium: @SportsSymposium and follow our dedicated event hashtag #GSS2014. Or sign up for more information on our site http://www.sportssymposium.org.
