McLaren Won’t Follow in Williams’ Float Footsteps

Chief financial officer for Formula 1 team McLaren, Andy Myers has stated that it will not be following its British rival Williams to the stock market.

50 per cent of the ownership of McLaren is held by Bahrain’s Mumtalakat sovereign wealth fund with the remaining shares in the hands of its chairman, Ron Dennis, and Saudi tycoon Mansour Ojjeh.

In November 2009, they bought out former shareholder Mercedes’ 40 per cent stake but the motivation was not to list the business according to Myers, who stated: “The McLaren group has no plans to float in the future.”

Tomorrow, March 2, Williams will become the first F1 team to float when it lists 28 per cent of its shares on the Frankfurt stock exchange with the majority of the offering sold by its co-founder Patrick Head, who intends to retire this year.

Myers said McLaren’s strategy “is to remain as a private company in the ownership of a small number of focused shareholders, since we believe that best suits our business model”.

“We understand his plight if reports are indeed true, but we can only help if he is willing to engage with us.”

He is planning to seek political asylum in Britain after fleeing from Dubai.

The expertise and investment that Sport England provides to grassroots sport is having a real impact with 15.5 million people playing sport once a week, link every week and communities up and down the country seeing their playing fields, pavilions, sports halls and pitches improved.”

The decision comes after a review into how Sport England and UK Sport might work more efficiently and effectively led by Sir Keith Mills. It identified a number of significant strategic and operational benefits from closer working which the two organisations have already been putting into place in areas such as governance and the link between our talent investment and UK Sport’s elite investment. This collaboration will be made even smoother by plans bring the two organisations together in one location next year and to explore all back office savings that can be made when this happens.

Today’s decision means the search can begin for a new Chair of Sport England to replace Richard Lewis when he stands down at the end of his four-year term. Last year Richard was appointed as Chief Executive of The All England Club, which runs the Wimbledon Tennis Championships.

Lewis said: “It has been a huge honour to Chair Sport England, an organisation which stands at the heart of sport in this country and which in recent years has made great progress in helping community sport to modernise, giving people the high quality experience they’re looking for. The result is that we have more people enjoying sport every week than ever before

I knew when I took up my role as Chief Executive of the All England Club that time constraints meant I would not be seeking reappointment as Chair of Sport England. I wish everyone well for the future. ”

ERC Dismayed with Walk-Out Threat

European Club Rugby (ECR) has said the threat to quit European rugby by English and French clubs has left them “dismayed and frustrated.”

Clubs want structural changes to be made to the Heineken Cup and Mark McCafferty, Chief Executive of Premiership Rugby said to the Guardian: “ERC should know that we are serious. If it’s not resolved, we would go to an Anglo-French competition.”

McCafferty believed that reams from the RboDirect Pro 12 are given a significant advantage in the competition due to qualification methods.

A statement from the ERC has been released and spokesman Mark Jones commented: “”We are dismayed and frustrated at the position that has been taken by Premier Rugby.

“This is a process that is laid down as part of the accord agreed in 2007. It’s not a bolt out of the blue. The current qualification process was agreed by ERC’s shareholders as part of the 2007 accord.

“We welcome a full review of the tournament and we believe that at the end of the consultation process, European rugby will emerge stronger.

“All of our shareholders have said they want to see European rugby thrive and have agreed this consultation process.

“Our meeting on September 18 in Dublin is the second step in the process.”

The French and English clubs have also been criticised by Michael Bradley, coach of Edinburgh Rugby. Bradley said: “For me it is a bit of posturing more than anything else and I would hope they wouldn’t change the format.”
