Carolina Hurricanes’ PNC Arena Becomes First U.S. NHL Venue with LED Lighting

PNC Arena, home to the Carolina Hurricanes, is set to become the first U.S. NHL venue to feature LED lighting.

Dave Olsen, Executive Vice President and General Manager of PNC Arena, announced today that the Centennial Authority has partnered with Musco, which will install its innovative Show-Light Green LED system in the coming weeks.

“In partnership with the Centennial Authority, we continue to explore opportunities to improve PNC Arena,” said Olsen. “In working with Musco Lighting to install their state-of-the-art LED lighting system, we are able to showcase Carolina Hurricanes hockey and NC State men’s basketball games in a cleaner light while also reducing our energy and maintenance costs.”

The advanced lighting system will feature optically enhanced fixtures, which will drastically reduce glare and improve playability for the athletes.

The increase in lighting performance at PNC Arena will be matched by a significant reduction in energy consumption and operating costs. Musco has retrofitted several major college indoor arenas with LED systems in the past year alone, reducing energy consumption at those venues by an average of 70 percent.

“We are proud to once again partner with the PNC Arena, and provide an innovative, sustainable LED solution,” said Musco Lighting’s Vice President of Developmental Sales, Jeff Rogers. “Our unique system design offers superior light control to put light where it’s needed to create a theater effect on the playing surface and reduce glare for players and spectators.”

Visitors to PNC Arena will enjoy their first in-game experience under the new LED lights on Sunday, September 21, when the Carolina Hurricanes host their preseason opener.

FIFA Suspends Nigeria Football Federation for Government Interference

FIFA, soccer’s world governing body, has today suspended the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) with immediate effect, on account of government interference.

Under one of FIFA’s statutes, member associations have to manage their affairs independently and with no influence from third parties.

The decision follows a letter sent by FIFA to the NFF on 4 July 2014, in which it expressed its concern after the NFF was served with court proceedings and consequently an order preventing the president of the NFF, the NFF Executive Committee members and the NFF Congress from running the affairs of Nigerian football was granted by a High Court of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The court order compelled the Nigerian Minister of Sports to appoint a senior member of the civil service to manage the NFF until the matter was heard in court, without giving any date for such a hearing. The authorities then appointed a person who decided to convene an extraordinary general assembly on 5 July 2014. This extraordinary general assembly was convened in violation of the NFF statutes.

Originally, an elective congress had been planned by the NFF to take place on 26 August 2014.

FIFA have said the suspension will be lifted once the court actions have been withdrawn and the properly elected NFF Executive Committee, the NFF general assembly and the NFF administration are able to work without any interference in their affairs.

As a result of this decision, no team from Nigeria of any sort can have any international sporting contact. During the period of suspension, the NFF may not be represented in any regional, continental or international competitions, including at club level, or in friendly matches.

The result of this means Nigeria will not play in the upcoming FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup (5-24 August 2014) should the suspension not be lifted by 15 July 2014.

Daytona International Speedway to Get Major Redevelopment

Daytona International Speedway is set for major redevelopment after International Speedway Corporation (ISC) today approved funding to revamp the 54-year-old flagship motorsports facility.

The multi-year project will break ground on July 5, 2013, and is targeted for completion in January 2016, in time for the 54th Rolex 24 At Daytona and the 58th DAYTONA 500.

“We are truly creating history with this unprecedented endeavor,” said ISC’s Chief Executive Officer Lesa France Kennedy.  “I commend the board’s decision to move forward on our plan to redevelop the Company’s signature motorsports facility, thereby shaping the vision of Daytona for the next 50 years.

“The decision was made with strong consideration of the current macroeconomic condition and a clear view for our long-term growth. This significant private investment is a strategic use of our capital that will ensure the long-term viability of the iconic speedway, and when completed, will contribute favorably to the Company’s revenues, as well as to our community and the sport as a whole.”

The redevelopment is expected to cost between $375 million to $400 million.

The vision for the redevelopment of the Daytona International Speedway frontstretch places an emphasis on enhancing the complete fan experience, beginning with five expanded and redesigned fan entrances, or injectors, along International Speedway Boulevard.

Every seat in the Speedway frontstretch will be replaced with wider and more comfortable seating, with more restrooms and concession stands throughout the facility.  At the conclusion of the redevelopment, Daytona International Speedway will be comprised of approximately 101,000 permanent seats with the potential to increase permanent seating to 125,000.

By moving all seating to the frontstretch, all attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy a full race day experience including pre-race ceremonies, pit road action and the facility’s new amenities.  “We will take great care of our loyal existing customers throughout this renovation,” said John Saunders, President of ISC.  “They can expect to receive additional direct communication as we proceed with construction.”

The redevelopment will also provide an expansive platform for ISC’s corporate marketing partners.  Hospitality is elevated with a completely revamped design that will exceed partners’ expectations for a more intimate, affordable and effective experience.  The new frontstretch will include 53 suites that will offer superb views of the track.

“The redevelopment of Daytona International Speedway reaffirms its status as the ‘World Center of Racing’ for years to come,” said Ms. France Kennedy.  “It is imperative that we build upon my grandfather’s vision to create a world-class facility with premium amenities to provide unparalleled experiences for our guests and partners.  Doing so will ensure that the DAYTONA 500 and all our other events continue to drive our business while serving as a significant economic engine for the region.”

Roush Fenway Racing Brings in Personnel to Rev Up Marketing

NASCAR’s Roush Fenway Racing has increased the marketing resources available to the team’s partners through the addition of six new hires and the creation of a new department focused on delivering incremental value to team sponsors.

The new personnel bring to Roush Fenway areas of expertise including brand marketing, event marketing, television production, digital engagement, NFL player representation and retail activation.

“We’re talking to our partners and fans this year about how driven our teams are to win races and championships,” said RFR president Steve Newmark. “That drive to be the best extends beyond the racetrack to the men and women in our organization who work with our world-class partners. We’ve added personnel and equipment to improve our ability to perform on the track for the 2013 race season, and in a similar way we’ve increased our resources for our partners to be able to win at retail and in the boardroom.”

Included in RFR’s new hires is marketing and industry veteran Mike Mooney, as vice president of partnership development. Mooney boasts over 20 years of strategic brand activation and creative marketing experience, most recently serving as vice president of motorsports at The Marketing Arm, Sport’s Business Journal’s “Sports Marketing Agency of the Year” in 2012. During his impressive career, the Elon University graduate has led marketing efforts for Fortune 500 companies such as Sprint Nextel, Walmart, Tylenol, Sunoco, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Daimler-Chrysler and Mercedes-Benz.

Mooney joins a staff led by SVP of business development Pete Thuresson, whose team renewed nine team partners (who reached the end of their agreements – this is redundant/implied if you have renewed, right? You could take out) at the close of the 2012 season – representing a 100% renewal rate for the organization during the off-season. In addition to the renewals, Roush Fenway recently announced its newest partner, World Financial Group, would be joining the fold through a primary sponsorship of Trevor Bayne for multiple races in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

In addition, the business development department has brought in Garrett Hess as an account executive. Hess moves to RFR from K Sports & Entertainment in Boston where his was Sponsorship Sales Manager and an athlete liaison.

“With the introduction of the new Gen-6 cars, our race teams experienced their busiest and most productive ‘off-season’ in history,” said Thuresson. “By securing all nine of the nine partners up for renewal, adding a new partner and growing our internal team, the same can be said for our marketing staff. It’s been a whirlwind of activity across the entire organization leading up to this season.”

In addition to the new personnel is the creation of a strategic marketing department focused on delivering incremental value to team partners through ideation and execution of activation, digital and public relations channels. This team is led by industry veterans Kevin Thomas, Amber Darnell and Kevin Woods, who represent nearly 40 years of NASCAR marketing experience. A season-long marketing platform titled “Driven” has already been launched as part of the effort.

The Jännerrallye in Austria will open the all-new FIA European Rally Championship in 2013 after its organisers agreed terms with new ERC promoter Eurosport Events.

“One of the biggest, yet most exciting challenges we face as the new promoter of the ERC is the formalisation of the calendar for 2013,” François Ribeiro, Motorsport Development Director of Eurosport Events, said. “We are delighted to open ERC 2013 in winter conditions with an established event such as the Jännerrallye. CVC Sells 21 per cent Stake in Formula One

Private equity firm, CVC Capital Partners, who owns a majority stake in world racing series Formula One has sold 21 per cent of the business for $1.6billion ahead of a planned flotation on the Singapore stock exchange this summer.

The shares have been sold to three new investors; BlackRock, an American multinational investment corporation; asset manager Waddell & Reed; and Norway’s Norges Bank Investment Management, the asset management unit of the Norwegian central bank.

The deal, which reduces CVC’s stake to around 40 per cent, sets a benchmark valuation of around $7 billion for the company as financial advisers begin to target investors during the pre-marketing process of the IPO, which could be one of the world’s largest this year.

“It raises some capital, which may be required, and it gives the IPO a little bit more credibility if some well-known investment houses come on board pre-IPO,” said Peter Elston, head of Asia-Pacific strategy and asset allocation at Aberdeen Asset Management’s Asian unit.

CVC Managing Partner Donald McKenzie described the development as an “important step” for Formula One, adding that his company would remain the sport’s controlling shareholder.

“This is great news for Formula One and an important step in its development,” McKenzie said. “CVC became the controlling shareholder of Formula One in 2006. Since that date we have supported the company and its management as they have grown the company with great success.

“The addition of these three highly regarded investors to our share register is validation of this success, and we look forward to working with our new partners over the coming years. CVC will continue to be Formula One’s largest and controlling shareholder.”

We like the pre-season stuff but we want a competitive game and we’re talking to the NBA about what might be possible. “We’re going to be in discussions with them.”
