Manchester United Ban Tablets & Laptops at Old Trafford

Manchester United have revealed they will not allow fans to bring tablets and laptops to football matches at its Old Tarfford stadium as part of a new security regime.

The club said it was reacting to “security intelligence”, adding the restriction was in line with new checks on electronic equipment at airports.

It said that unlike at airports, it would be “impractical” at the stadium to check the devices were genuine by asking for them to be powered up.

A statement on the club’s site says the ban extends to large and small tablets “including iPad minis”, as well as larger electronic devices.

Smartphones are still permitted as long as their dimensions are smaller than 15cm by 10cm (5.9in by 3.9in).

The statement added: “The regulations at each stadium are a matter for the relevant stadium management authorities, however, the scale of Old Trafford and profile of Manchester United mean that the risk at this venue is unique.”

AFL Architects to Design FC Kuban’s New Stadium

AFL Architects with Tecnion and Synthesis Rus have announced recently they have been chosen as lead designers for the new FC Kuban stadium set to be built in Krasnodar.

It is set to be a 45.000 seat stadium capable of hosting international events. AFL Architects have worked with major organisations like FIFA and UEFA along with many top clubs.

The Stadium is designed to be foremost a ‘Club’ stadium which can host the Russian Football Federation games for FC Kuban and UEFA cup games. It will be also capable of hosting a FIFA event, with minimal change while also being able to host other events, such as International Rugby or outdoor Concerts.

John Roberts the Director of Sports at AFL explains the starting point for the scheme: “We intend to create an stadium that the opposition will be afraid of visiting – the 12th man – where all of the 45,000 supporters are ‘on the pitch’. In section, the building brings the supporters close to the pitch whilst the upper tier spectators tower over the pitch, all of this is reinforced by the angular roof, cowering, as if it’s a Cheetah ready to pounce on the opposition.”

The stadium is also set to be designed with technology advancements in mind.

AFL Architects said in a statement: “We will provide the ability to have wifi throughout the stadium, available to all supporters with their smart phones, allowing them to link into the clubs website for the latest exclusive news, the latest signing, the gossip……and sending SMS messages to your friends at home who couldn’t get a ticket as the goal is scored that wins the Championship or gets the team into the finals of the Champions League.”

PCB chief invited to IPL final

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief, Zaka Ashraf, has said he has accepted an invitation to attend the Indian Premier League (IPL) final on Sunday and would use to visit to discuss reviving cricketing ties between the rivals.

Ashraf’s invitation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) comes more than three years after ties were suspended.

“It is a positive step forward in further normalising bilateral cricket ties between the two countries,” Ashraf said.

The invitation will allow me to undertake a two-day visit to India and I plan to use this visit to have informal discussions with the BCCI officials regarding chances of restoring bilateral cricket ties.”

Ties were suspended following the 2008 attacks on Mumbai that left 166 people dead and were blamed on Pakistani militants.

The BCCI recently approved a Pakistani team featuring in this year’s Champions League.

Pakistan President, Asif Ali Zardari, met Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and stated the need for a restoration of cricketing ties.

India and Pakistan are due to play this year in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Future Tour Programme but India’s busy schedule is the most significant obstacle.

Ashraf believes that matches with India will be possible.

“We are positive about it as we want to play India regularly in bilateral matches and we are willing to talk to them at every level to achieve this,” he said.

NFL Look for Increased Deals with CBS, NBC & Fox to Rival ESPN Contract

The National Football League is confident it will receive increased offers for new contracts with CBS, NBC and Fox, after ESPN paid a substantial sum for their contract a top executive said.

“I think in the next year or so we will have these deals done,” said Brian Rolapp, head of the NFL’s media business, of impending negotiations with its broadcast partners on the Sunday package of games. The NFL’s current contracts with CBS Corp, News Corp’s Fox and Comcast Corp’s NBC expire after the 2013 season.

Rolapp added that once those deals were done the league will look at selling the TV rights to a new package of Thursday night games.

The NFL in September announced an eight year, $15.2 billion extension with Walt Disney Co’s ESPN for Monday Night Football. The deal, which included additional rights beyond just the TV broadcast, represented a roughly 73 percent increase over the previous contract.

“We think what ESPN paid is an indication of the strength of our product,” Rolapp said, speaking at the Reuters Global Media Summit in New York.

ESPN’s willingness to pay what amounts to nearly $2 billion a year underscores the importance of live sports, and particularly the NFL, to TV networks.

Sports is almost always watched live by viewers, which is of immense importance to advertisers and separates it from most programming such as dramas and comedies that are often recorded and watched later.

The NFL has an exclusive negotiating period with partners CBS, Fox and NBC, whose current contracts collectively add up to about $2 billion a year, or the same amount ESPN alone agreed to pay under its new deal. After that it can open up talks with other networks, if necessary.

“Those are all great partners and we hope they remain partners,” Rolapp said of the broadcast trio. “That’s always our goal going into these discussions.”

After avoiding some of the heavy on-field advertising of other sports such as MLS soccer, the NFL is now studying what would be a major sideline sponsorship, Rolapp said.

A deal should be struck before next season that could include rights to sponsor technology such as tablet computers and communications systems used by players and coaches, he said.

Rolapp said he is currently holding talks with a number of technology companies, though he declined to identify them. In the end, a deal could see coaches and players on the sidelines gathered around an iPad from Apple Inc. or an Android device by Google Inc, formulating plays or deconstructing defenses in front of millions of TV viewers.

“That is probably one of our most interesting opportunities,” Rolapp said. “We have had lots of conversations and been approached by, or have approached, a wide swath of technology companies.”

He added, “We want to make sure we get this one right.”

As for the NFL Network, which the league launched eight years ago, Rolapp said that it could expand its current package of seven Thursday night games. He did not rule out, however, that additional Thursday games could be sold to another cable or broadcast network.

The NFL Network’s absence from Time Warner Cable is likely to continue, however, as Rolapp said that discussions with the company over a distribution deal were nonexistent. While most major cable companies now carry the network, talks between the NFL Network and Time Warner Cable to end their standoff broke down earlier this year.
