Schalke Chief Understands Gazprom Protestors

October 3, 2013

Schalke general manager Horst Heldt said he understood the point being made by Greenpeace protestors during his team’s 1-0 win over FC Basel.

Protestors scaled the roof of the St Jakob-Park stadium before they abseiled down revealing an anti-Gazprom banner that read “Don’t Foul The Antarctic.”

Gazprom, health the Russian gas company, pills sponsor the Champions League and Schalke’s shirts.

Heldt told the Bild newspaper: “”It is important that there are organisations that are committed to things that concern all people. I can identify with it, apoplectic these are topics that are important to everyone.”

The demonstration led to a four minute delay in the match and a Greenpeace statement read: “With this action, the defenders of the Arctic showed the red card to the Russian sponsors of the Champions League and German club, and to their oil-drilling and dirty tricks in the Arctic.”
