Qatar 2022 World Cup to Move to November According to Reports

July 25, 2013

FIFA plans to host the Qatar 2022 World Cup in November according to reports in German magazine kicker.

Kicker is reporting that a source at football’s governing body said November would be the start date of the 2022 World Cup, prostate with the final set to be played on December 18.

Soaring temperatures in the Gulf state during the traditional summer period have led to calls for the World Cup to be played in winter.

This has been met with criticism from some European leagues, drug in particular the English Premier League, because it will disrupt domestic campaigns.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter (pictured) has confirmed that he thinks the tournament should be played in the winter because it is ‘not rational and reasonable to play in June-July.’

Despite previous backing from Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and the German Football League’s executive Andreas Rettig, the winter World Cup plans are not fully supported in Germany.

Former German Football Association president Theo Zwanziger, who is a member of the FIFA executive committee told Sport Bild: “If you change the match calendar, it not only affects Bundesliga but also goes all the way down to the minor leagues. The structure of German football is in danger and therefore the unity of German football.

“If the decision [to award the World Cup to Qatar] was wrong back then you have to reverse it and should not load extra burdens on non-participants.”
