What is the potential for rugby in China?

The IRB has today announced it has agreed a memorandum of understanding with the Chinese Rugby Football Association and the city of Guangzhou to try to grow the game in China.

This will include introducing rugby to 30 schools in Guangzhou.

The Hong Kong sevens is a popular event and the 2019 World Cup being held in Asia for the first time could benefit the IRB's attempts to grow the sport but there's plenty of other sports trying to 'crack'  China at the moment, is the market too saturated?

What is the potential for rugby in China in terms of viewership and participation?

It will take some effort to educate the market as most people in mainland China have not played rugby before and don't understand it. Chinese parents maybe resistant to rugby as it may have a higher chance of getting their only-child hurt compared to non-contact sports. It maybe better to start from a city with large expat population like Beijing and Shanghai.
