Sporting Sanity

Like the rest of the UK economy sports clubs are finding it hard to make ends meet. It is difficult to find a professional rugby club or county cricket club that makes an operating profit. Similarly, many football clubs are spending their way into administration.

With more and more sports organisations unable to sustain their activity without reporting annual financial losses is it time to extend the concept of UEFA's Financial Fair Play rules?

Living within your means is a cardinal rule for any business. Any sports club spending more than it earns should face a penalty from its ruling body. Would this restore some sanity to sport?

I think that the Football League have just done this, however beware as it is a big club's charter - under this sort of philosophy the big clubs will prevail because they have the ability to generate more income. Wigan, Fulham etc may struggle without a benefactor's benevolence.

While encouraging clubs to spend no more than they earn seems like a good idea, is it possible this would have the adverse effect of preventing less-established clubs using cash injections to 'close the gap' (in terms of the calibre of players etc) on the most successful clubs that generate more revenue?
