The International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (IWWF) are ‘delighted’ with their lofty position in the iSportconnect 2020 Olympic Games poll.

Wakeboarding is one of the eight sports looking to be added to the Olympic programme in 2020, order along with wrestling, squash, karate, wushu, roller sport, sport climbing and baseball/softball.

The poll has been live for just over a month and has received over 5000 participants. At the time of writing, when asked ‘what sport do you think should be included in the 2020 Olympics,’ 14.1% said wakeboarding, putting the board sport in fourth place.

Speaking exclusively to iSportconnect, Chairman Marketing & Media IWWF, Des Burke-Kennedy said: “We are delighted to see that the newest sport of all, wakeboarding, has done so well.

“While we are not surprised, I think this is worthy of notice and a strong indicator that the Boardsports community is enormous as it is one of the few which represents a youth driven lifestyle sport seen by many as “cool” – and that really is what the Olympic Games needs for 2020.”

The iSportconnect poll showed that squash was currently the most popular sport with 22.1% of the votes and Istanbul lead the city poll with 44% of the votes.
