Barclays and Premier League Launch New Community Scheme

A new community scheme jointly funded by Barclays and the Premier League launched today at Arsenal’s Emirates stadium and will be rolled out through the community schemes of 20 football clubs across the country. 

Barclays Premier League Works will use the power of football to engage young people who are often not involved in education, therapy training or employment, capsule and will then use the best of business to train them to become work ready and achieve their life goals.

The programme provides young people with financial skills, ampoule confidence and the experience they need to make a positive transition back into education, access training or gain meaningful employment. 

Barclays Premier League Works was piloted at five Barclays Premier League Clubs last season; Arsenal, Everton, Southampton, Stoke and Sunderland all ran the scheme.

Barclays and the Premier League are aiming for more success as the scheme rolls out across 17 current Barclays Premier League clubs and three Championship clubs who were in the top flight last season.

Through the scheme Barclays and the Premier League are aiming to engage over 500 young people across the 20 clubs, with those Community Champions passing their knowledge onto a further 10,000 youngsters.

Paulette Cohen, Barclays Head of Global Programmes, added: “We’ve committed to changing 5 Million Young Futures through programmes like Barclays Premier League Works, giving the next generation access to the enterprise, employability and financial skills they need to achieve their ambitions.

“We know that sport can be a powerful tool to engage young people, and we’re delighted to be working with the Premier League to get young people in our communities into work or training.” 

Simon Morgan, who is head of Community Development for the Premier League, said “It’s great that Barclays and the Premier League have come together to launch Barclays Premier League Works at 20 professional football clubs across the UK.

“The scheme represents a genuine chance for young people to develop life changing skills that will really enhance their employment prospects and their chances of going onto further education”.
